In the new Showtime series, “Kidding,” Jim Carrey stars as Jeff Pickles, a Fred Rogers-like children’s television show host clinging to his wholesome persona while his personal life implodes.
“Jim Carrey, just being a vessel for joy, imbues with certain nostalgia that’s reminiscent of Mr. Rogers,” show creator David Holstein told Variety on Wednesday night at the series’ premiere in Hollywood. “In the time that we live in right now, if we had a Mr. Rogers around to tell us to do the right thing, we’d see a lot of different things on the television than we do now.”
Swinging from moments of heartwarming smiles to gut wrenching turns, audiences get Carrey at his comedic and dramatic best. As Mr. Pickles, we follow his valiant efforts to remain morally upright, while the world around him seemingly does not want to follow suit.

As the film world’s awards season heats up, audiences are already anticipating new projects starring Sean Penn, Emma Stone, Julia Roberts, Jim Carrey, Toni Collette, Michael Douglas, and Benicio del Toro.
Of course, all of those projects happen to be TV series, and they’re part of what’s shaping up to be perhaps the most ambitious fall TV season ever. A lot has been made of TV’s current reboot/remake/reunion culture, and that’s definitely a trend this fall. Some of the season’s most anticipated new shows include CBS’ return to “Murphy Brown,” and what ABC has in store for “The Conners,” the spin-off of “Roseanne” that comes thanks to Twitter.
The fall also includes several adaptations, including Netflix’s “Chilling Adventures of Sabrina,” Amazon’s TV take on the successful podcast “Homecoming,” starring Roberts (and from Sam Esmail), and AMC’s next limited series...

If you’re tired of anti-heroes, Jim Carrey’s new Showtime series, “Kidding,” might be just what you’re looking for.
Writer and executive producer of the series, Dave Holstein, went into the project wanting to write a character that “didn’t want to break bad, but wanted to stay good,” he told reporters at the Television Critics Association summer 2018 press tour on Monday
“To me, it was less about finding a character whose journey was a nervous breakdown and more about coming off a show like ‘Weeds’ that’s full of anti-heroes, and having this sort of fatigue of characters who existed because they were… doing drugs or killing people,” he said.

In the new trailer for “Kidding,” Jim Carrey’s big return to TV after more than two decades, a Mr. Rogers-esque kids-tv personality is confronted with the darker side of life and is deeply unequipped for it.
The Showtime dramedy follows Carrey as Jeff, a.k.a. Mr. Pickles, a beloved children’s entertainer who sees his own life upended as his personal relationships begin to implode. It is set to premiere Sunday, September 9.
Throughout the season, Carrey’s character begins to push back against the limits of the well-oiled machine of his show, led by executive producer, Seb (Frank Langella). But when this beloved personality’s family begins to implode, Jeff finds no fairytale, fable or puppet will guide him through this crisis, which advances faster than his means to cope. The result: A kind man in a cruel world faces a slow leak of sanity as hilarious as it is heartbreaking.

Jim Carrey is reuniting with his “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind” director Michel Gondry to star in a new half-hour comedy for Showtime. “Kidding,” which has been given a 10-episode order, will represent Carrey’s first series regular role in more than two decades.
“Kidding” stars Carrey as Jeff, also known as beloved children’s TV personality Mr. Pickles. Here’s the logline: “A beacon of kindness and wisdom to America’s impressionable young minds and the parents who grew up with him – [Jeff] also anchors a multimillion dollar branding empire. But when this beloved personality’s family – wife, two sons, sister and father – begins to implode, Jeff finds no fairy tale or fable or puppet will guide him through this crisis, which advances faster than his means to cope. The result: a kind man in a cruel world faces a slow leak of sanity as hilarious as it is heartbreaking.

Michel Gondry's Doc NYC Closer, an Animated Conversation with Noam Chomsky, Goes to Sundance Selects
Sundance Selects is acquiring North American rights to Michel Gondry’s animated conversation with philosopher and linguist Noam Chomsky "Is the Man Who is Tall Happy?" before it closes the Doc NYC festival. This animated documentary on the life and work of the controversial MIT philosophy and linguistics professor and political activist is directed by Gondry ("Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind" and "The Science of Sleep") and produced by Georges Bermann, Gondry, Raffi Adlan and Julie Fong. In the film Gondry conducts long complicated talks with Chomsky accompanied by Gondry's own illustrations. An early teaser trailer is here. Gondry described the long-in-the-works film before an MIT preview last February (via the Animated Matters): "My conversations with Professor Chomsky were lively, sometime complex, always very human. Through my illustrations, we follow the winding path of my halting and incomplete understanding. Noam is often patient, sometime less so....

This centers on a group of school kids who accidentally travel into the future to discover another machine that keeps people younger. "It's about the group effect, how people in groups transform when the group is dislocated, because everyone jumps out of the bus at different times, there is a smaller group and how the relationships evolve."...(more) Cast: Non professional actors.
