Leave it to Will Ferrell to turn a prestigious lifetime achievement award into a punchline.

The “Anchorman” star was honored with the Kirk Douglas Award for Excellence in Film by the Santa Barbara International Film Festival (Sbiff) on Tuesday night — and he brought the jokes with him.

“The fact that you’d drive up to this hellhole, Santa Barbara, means so much to me,” Ferrell joked as he thanked members of the audience, which included co-stars Kristen Wiig and Octavia Spencer. “I was actually here at the Santa Barbara Film Festival in 1997 with a little ditty called ‘Men Seeking Women’ starring ‘Murphy Brown’s’ Grant Shaud. Before Laraine Newman brought it to Saturday Night Live, the valley girl accent was relatively obscure, really only known to Southern Californians as the way surfers spoke. As an L.A. native, though, Newman was very familiar with it, and so, she used it for inspiration for a character she developed named Sherry, a rambling, airheaded blonde who loved to talk about her “bitchin’ bod.”

She originally performed the character at The Groundlings, but she took Sherry — and the valley girl dialect — national when she became an original “Not Ready for Prime Time Player” in 1975 (in a sketch about group therapy that also included Don Corleone). In turn, Sherry became one of Newman’s best-known SNL characters. But because Newman never wanted to repeat herself, she only did Sherry for about a year, a decision which, 50 years later, she’s still unsure about.

It's one of the biggest states in the United States, both in terms of its geographical size and population, but it has an equally big reputation. Television nominees for the 30th Annual Critics Choice Awards were announced on Thursday, and FX’s acclaimed drama Shōgun led the pack with six total nominations.

Shōgun was one of eight shows to earn a nod in the Best Drama Series category, while cast members Hiroyuki Sanada, Anna Sawai, Tadanobu Asano, Takehiro Hira and Moeka Hoshi all picked up nominations for their work, as well.

The Critics Choice Association (CCA) has announced all the nominees for the TV categories for the 30th annual Critics Choice Awards happening on Sunday, January 12, 2025 at the Barker Hangar in Los Angeles.

In the lead overall is the Emmy-winning FX series “Shōgun” with six nominations including Best Drama Series, Best Actor in a Drama Series for producer/star Hiroyuki Sanada, Best Actress in a Drama Series for Anna Sawai, and Best Supporting Actress in a Drama Series — a category it was left out of at the Emmys — for Moeka Hoshi.

Other series recognized with multiple nominations include “Abbott Elementary,” “Hacks,” “The Diplomat” and “What We Do in the Shadows,” which have all been recognized by the organization in previous years, as well as new series like “Disclaimer,” “The Penguin,” and “English Teacher.”

Nominations for the film categories will be announced on Thursday, December 12, 2024.

Hot off its record haul at the Emmys, FX/Hulu’s Shōgun leads the 30th Critics Choice Awards TV nominations with six, followed by a half-dozen other shows with four each: ABC’s Abbott Elementary, Apple TV+’s Disclaimer, HBO|Max’s Hacks and The Pengiun, Netflix’s The Diplomat and the final season of FX’s What We Do in the Shadows.

Eight other programs are next with three nominations apiece.

Netflix leads all networks and platforms with 23 Cca noms, followed by awards rival HBO|Max with 21. FX with 13 and Apple TV+ with 12 are the only others in double digits.

Nominations for the film categories will be revealed December 12, and the awards will be handed out Sunday, January 12, at Barker Hangar in Santa Monica. E! will air the Critics Choice Awards live.

The Critics Choice Association has announced its TV nominees for the 2025 Critics Choice Awards.

Shogun leads with six nominations, including best drama series, followed by Abbott Elementary, Disclaimer, Hacks, The Diplomat, The Penguin and What We Do In the Shadows, which all each garnered four nominations.

The most nominations for a platform came with Netflix’s 23, with HBO/Max finishing closely behind with 21. FX (including FX on Hulu) had 20.

Nominations for the Critics Choice film categories will be announced on Dec. 12. The Critics Choice Awards will air on E! on Jan. 12 and will be hosted by Chelsea Handler.

Fresh off of her Emmy win for Hacks, Jean Smart will host the first episode of the landmark season on Sept.

The big winner was Jacques Audiard‘s Netflix musical “Emilia Pérez,” which claimed Best Music-Themed Film, Biopic, or Musical, where it beat other formidable awards contenders like “A Complete Unknown” and “Wicked.” The film’s star Zoe Saldaña also won Best Song (Onscreen Performance) for “El Mal,” defeating Timothee Chalamet playing Bob Dylan‘s “Blowin’ in the Wind” in “A Complete Unknown” and Cynthia Erivo belting out “Defying Gravity” in “Wicked.” Lastly, the film won Best Score (Feature Film) for Clément Ducol and Camille, bringing its total to three, making it the most awarded film of the year.

2024 has been a great year so far, with brilliant animated films released this year. While the year started out slow, but after Inside Out 2 came out in theaters and broke every conceivable record, it was off to the races. We compiled a list of the best animated films we could find that came out this year. So, rest up gather your family for most of these films, and enjoy these best-animated films of 2024.

Transformers One (Paramount+ & Rent on Prime Video) Credit – Paramount Pictures

Transformers One is an animated sci-fi action film directed by Josh Cooley from a screenplay co-written by Eric Pearson, Andrew Barrer, and Gabriel Ferrari. Based on the Transformers action figures by Hasbro, the 2024 film follows the origin stories of Optimus Prime and Megatron who were once friends before turning into each others’ arch nemesis.

With its ’70s-era production details and sprawling age-spanning ensemble, Saturday Night has high hopes for the Oscars this year. But if the Jason Reitman period piece manages to win one, it will achieve something that the cast it depicts never could.

Though Saturday Night Live has racked up a record-breaking 103 Emmys and churned out generational talent with regularity over its 50 seasons, only six among its more than 150 castmembers have ever been nominated for an Oscar (five if you don’t include one-episode-and-done player Laurie Metcalf).

Its only winner? Robert Downey Jr., just this past March for Oppenheimer. And his 1985-86 SNL stint is a career footnote.

“I don’t think it’s conscious,” says Turner Classic Movies host Dave Karger, an Oscar prognosticator and author of 50 Oscar Nights, “but there might be something going on. There’s obviously a disconnect between SNL and [film] awards.”

The stars were out for the 2024 Governors Awards held at Dolby Theatre on Sunday evening (November 17) in Hollywood.

The annual event is held prior to the Oscars and celebrates the recipients of a select few of awards conferred by the Academy’s Board of Governors – the Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Award, the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award and the Honorary Award.

Many celebrities were in attendance at the event this year, including Angelina Jolie, Jennifer Lopez, Nicole Kidman, Daniel Craig, Elizabeth Olsen, pregnant Jennifer Lawrence, Felicity Jones, Marlee Matlin, and more.

Maybe don’t call Dan Aykroyd?

The writer-star of the 1984 Ghostbusters said it was unlikely he and Bill Murray would return to their iconic roles in the sci-fi comedy franchise.

“I don’t see that coming,” Aykroyd told the New York Post while promoting his History Channel series The UnBelievable With Dan Aykroyd.

The Og Saturday Night Live cast member and Oscar nominee continued, “I don’t see where they would need us to carry it on. They’ve got a whole new cast, and they’ve got whole new ideas.”

Aykroyd, Murray, Ernie Hudson and the late Harold Ramis starred as Manhattan-based paranormal investigators in the 1984 lighthearted action-horror movie, from a script by Aykroyd and Ramis, with Ivan Reitman directing. Also starring Sigourney Weaver and Rick Moranis, the pic became a critical and commercial success, spawning several sequels and reboots, as well as merchandise and a coveted spot in the cultural zeitgeist.

We’re seven episodes in, and Saturday Night Live has a 50th anniversary problem. The season thus far has ranged from “Okay, pretty good” to “hit and miss” (Bill Burr and Michael Keaton) to “yeesh” (Jean Smart and last night’s episode with in-over-her-head Charli Xcx.) That’s par for the course for the past decade of SNL, but months of drumroll leading into the anniversary year promised more.

Last night’s show was emblematic of the season’s mediocrity. Overall, SNL continues to suffer from the same self-inflicted wounds. These are the show’s three biggest missteps so far this season…

While many “Deadpool & Wolverine” quips have become fan favorites, like Gambit’s “I’m boutta’ make a name for myself here,” star and screenwriter Ryan Reynolds has a more sentimental take on which lines were his favorite to write.

“The thing I’m probably most proud of was the Wolverine speech in the van where he just tears Deadpool a new one,” said Reynolds. “To me, it’s one of the most beautiful scenes in the movie because you see what a raw, visceral, powerhouse of an actor Hugh Jackman is. But you also see the roles reversed. You see a character who is never verbose, who is a Clint Eastwood archetype, suddenly going, ‘Oh yeah, man? Well, I can talk too.'”

Will Forte is one of my favourite comic actors, but he may only have 19 years left to live. At least, that’s if you believe what a pissed-off spirit said through an Ouija board. While appearing on Rachel Dratch’s Woo Woo podcast, Forte flashed back to when he was a teenager and asked the Ouija board how he was going to die. Time and time again, several films - from Christmas classics to rom-com favorites - have found a life not necessarily because they are deemed to be the best (although some of them are), but because these films have the capacity to be watched on a more casual setting while they are watched out of enjoyment, and most importantly, comfort. In this time of uncertainty, from the events of the last few years down to what just transpired days ago, cinema has the capacity to uplift us and make us look for the silver lining in these tough times. I would like to ask you, dear reader: what is your go-to comfort film?...

We’re not going to offer any kind of defense of Jonah Hill, who, judging from events that played out on social media last year, may be closer to his This Is the End character than any of us thought. But it turns out that we do have to thank the Superbad star for one thing: He saved one of SNL’s most wonderfully bizarre recurring sketches from the editorial wrath of Lorne Michaels.

This week’s episode of The Lonely Island and Seth Meyers Podcast concerned the Digital Short “Andy’s Dad,” in which Hill reveals that he’s been secretly dating Andy Samberg’s father (played by SNL head writer Jim Downey).

The podcast also featured a prolonged voicemail from Hill himself, who discussed not only “Andy’s Dad,” but also “Clancy and Jackie” from the same 2008 episode. That sketch found Will Forte and Kristen Wiig playing country singers Clancy T.

One neat aspect of the original "Frasier" series is that it featured a bunch of bonafide Hollywood legends as guest stars we never actually got to see. While many renowned actors showed up in the physical — from Michael Keaton to Linda Hamilton — many more only lent their voice to the beloved sitcom, calling into Frasier's Kacl talk radio show for some advice from the good doctor. In fact, before she appeared on the show's fourth season as Molly, a potential love interest for Frasier who quickly gets away, Linda Hamilton herself called into Dr. Crane's radio show in the pilot episode, voicing the character of Claire, a woman struggling to get over her ex-boyfriend.

Over the course of 11 seasons, many more prestigious guest stars called Frasier for advice. Kevin Bacon, Mary Tyler Moore, Carrie Fisher, Billy Crystal, Macaulay Culkin, Helen Mirren, and Bill Paxton are just some examples. But it wasn't just actors.

More than a hundred songwriters, composers, perfomers and films are represented in the nominees’ list for the 2024 Hollywood Music in Media Awards — from pop luminaries like Elton John & Brandi Carlile, Miley Cyrus, Lainey Wilson and Pharrell Williams to celebrated scorers like Hans Zimmer, Harry Gregson-Williams, Kris Bowers and Trent Reznor & Atticus Ross.
