Exclusive: Amplify Pictures has hired former CAA, Quibi and Picturestart exec Luke Esselen to take on a senior role as the international studio pushes into scripted.

Esselen has been named Senior Scripted Executive, reporting into Amplify’s Amsterdam-based Chief Content Officer, Rachel Eggebeen. He will be based in L.A., where Amplify is based, and be responsible for a slate of scripted projects that have an emphasis on ongoing series and franchises.

He just finished his first draft, and “everybody who’s read it has been blown away,” says the guy who just finished the first draft. “The process of working on this with and alongside Mel Brooks has been one of the highlights of my career.”

Paramount Global label Republic Pictures taken US and Canadian distribution rights to Alex Winter-directed Adulthood.

The parent company revived the Republic label in 2023 with a remit to acquire third-party fare. Paramount Global’s chief content licensing officer Dan Cohen is also president of Republic Pictures.

Republic Pictures has picked up U.S. & Canadian rights to Alex Winter’s Adulthood.

Described as “darkly comic, modern-noir,” the film was penned by novelist Michael M.B. Galvin and stars Josh Gad Kaya Scodelario (The Gentlemen), Billie Lourd (Booksmart), and Anthony Carrigan (Barry) alongside Winter.

The film follows a sister and brother, Megan and Noah, who are barely hanging on in present-day America. When they discover a dead body, long buried in their parents’ basement, the siblings are pulled back to the hometown they ran away from and into a rabbit hole of crime and murder.

Producers on the pic include Alex Winter, Scott Kroopf (Limitless), Russell Hollander (Flight Risk) and Lisa Wolofsky (Tow). Producers from Olive Hill Media (Plane) include Michael Cho and Tim Lee. Producers from Fresh Fish Films include Danny Roberts, H.S. Naji and Jackie Langelier.

Trey Parker and Matt Stone were probably surprised as well, since their original intention for Book of Mormon was to make an animated movie as a follow-up to one of their biggest movie successes.

That’s what one of the musical’s original stars, Josh Gad, told Jesse Tyler Ferguson on his Dinner’s On Me podcast, via Indiewire. “Trey and Matt thought that they were going to do it as an animated film. It was going to be their follow-up to Team America. And we ended it,” Gad explained about a live reading of the script. “The response was effusive, albeit people were definitely taken aback and shocked. And they had a huddle and they decided in that moment, ‘Let’s try this as a live theatrical thing.

Josh Gad, who originated the role of Elder Arnold Cunningham in the 2011 production, said during Sony Music Entertainment’s “Dinner’s On Me” podcast that co-writers Trey Parker and Matt Stone originally set out to make “Book of Mormon” in the vein of beloved animated satirical film “Team America: World Police.”

Did you forget about Adam Sandler's 2015 movie "Pixels?" If you did, that makes sense; it was a critical flop that ended up scoring a Razzie nomination (though it at least performed solidly at the box office). As “Jimmy Kimmel Live” returned for Season 23 on the week of Sept. 23, the late night show scored a 0.19 rating among adults 18-49 on ABC, according to Nielsen live-plus-same-day figures, becoming the No. 1 highest rated late night show this week. The show also averaged 1.68 million total viewers in its premiere week.

Ratings for “Jimmy Kimmel Live” outpaced that of CBS’s “Late Night with Stephen Colbert,” which scored a 0.18 rating in the same week, as well as NBC’s “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon,” which drew in a rating of 0.16 rating.

Sherwood Schwartz's 1964 sitcom "Gilligan's Island" was a pop-cultural powerhouse, attracting a mass audience larger than any of the CBS executives expected. While many critics and audience members criticized the show for being silly, unrealistic, and simplistic, it nonetheless lasted for three hit seasons, and was put into eternal syndication, staying alive in reruns for decades. What's more, the series warranted numerous TV movie sequels and spinoffs, including a 1981 TV movie wherein Gilligan (Bob Denver) and the other castaways met the Harlem Globetrotters -- called, helpfully, "The Harlem Globetrotters on Gilligan's Island" -- and an animated series wherein the castaways became stranded on a distant planet (!). Yes, "Gilligan's Planet" is a thing.

The spinoffs retained all the original cast members, with the exception of Tina Louise, whose character, Ginger, was played by various other actors. Curiously, the Globetrotters movie was the last time an original "Gilligan's Island" project graced the screen.

Saturday Night Live took to the debate stage on Saturday with Bowen Yang’s J.D. Vance and Jim Gaffigan’s Tim Walz.

The latest episode spoofed the vice presidential debate from earlier this week, which saw an awkward Vance and goofy Walz go head-to-head in a somewhat cordial debate. And SNL‘s cold open brought that same energy.

The sketch kicked off with Maya Rudolph’s Kamala Harris and Andy Samberg’s Douglas Emhoff sitting down to watch the debate. “I am feeling good tonight,” Rudolph says. “We have got momentum. Liz Cheney’s about to endorse me and Bruce Springsteen. ‘Cause baby I was born to run (referencing his song ‘Born To Run’).”

The debate starts with moderators Heidi Gardner’s Norah O’Donnell and Chloe Fineman’s Margaret Brennan asking for the candidates for their opening statements.

“Thank you for having me. I want to begin with something that will appeal to women voters.

“SNL” took on the vice presidential debate in Sunday’s cold open, but it was still Maya Rudolph’s Kamala Harris who took center stage. The cold open was framed with Harris and her husband Doug Emhoff (played by Andy Samberg) watching the VP debate from home. After Samberg’s Emhoff described himself as a Grilf – “which means golden retriever I’d like to French” – Rudolph’s Harris confessed she was nervous about the debate.

The sketch then cut to the debate itself with Bowen Yang reprising his role as GOP running mate Jd Vance and Jim Gaffigan back as Tim Walz.

“I wanna begin with something that’ll appeal to women voters,” Yang’s Vance said. “I understand both moderators tonight are mothers and I like that.”

Cut to Gaffigan’s Walz, caught off guard – “I gotta grade these papers, got a stack of midterms,” he said in a fluster while holding papers.
