James Mitchell was born in South Shields in the North of England and was educated at South Shields Grammar School, Saint Edwards Hall, Oxford and Durham University. He is best known for having written the book When the Boat Come in which was turned in to the television series of the same name. He also wrote the film Innocent Bystanders and created Callan which was made into a television series along with Troubleshooters and at least contributed to The Avengers and Mogul and also wrote under the name James Munro. He died on 15th September 2002
