Horror is one of the many genres that audiences love to digest. It's particularly prominent in cinema and on television, with horror movies and TV shows enjoying a lot of success over the past few decades. In fact, I recently put together a list recommending some horror movies and TV shows based on comic books.
But there are also plenty of horror comic books, too. With that in mind, I'd now like to focus on the comics that inspired many of the movies and shows from the previous list. So, without further adieu, here's some horror comic book recommendations for spooky season.
A note that this list is in no particular order!

In 1940, Gardner Fox and Henry Lampert introduced a comic book superhero named The Flash. Over the years, various characters have taken on the mantle of the Crimson Speedster, with Barry Allen being the most iconic.
Each version of the character has contributed unique elements to his lore and possessed distinct powers that set them apart from other Flashes.
Barry Allen appeared in the Dceu, portrayed by Ezra Miller. While Miller’s performance as The Flash was generally well-received, his off-screen controversies, along with a lackluster standalone film, ultimately led to his dismissal from the Dcu. Prompting James Gunn to seek a new Flash.
Although it’s unclear who Gunn has in mind for the role, many fans believe Elliot Page would be an excellent choice. In light of this speculation, a series of stunning AI-generated images featuring Page as Barry Allen in costume have gone viral.

In 1940, Gardner Fox and Henry Lampert created a comic book superhero known by the name The Flash. Throughout the years, several different characters have donned the costume of the Crimson Speedster, with Barry Allen being the most famous of them.
Each iteration of the character brought something unique to his history and each of them had some specific powers that made it special when compared to the other Flashes.
The Barry Allen version of the character was featured in the Dceu, where he was played by Ezra Miller. And while Miller wasn’t a bad Flash per se, the actor’s private life, as well as a poor standalone movie, contributed to him being fired from the Dcu, as James Gunn is looking for a new Flash.
And while we have absolutely no clue whom Gunn is looking at, many fans online believe that Elliot Page would be a perfect choice for the role.

In "Deadpool & Wolverine," the first half of that duo (Ryan Reynolds) jokes that the Marvel Cinematic Universe's "Multiverse Saga" isn't really working. Does that mean Marvel Studios is switching course? Probably not, if the forthcoming "Avengers: Secret Wars" is any indication.
The MCU has largely been using the concept of infinite worlds as metatext about different superhero movie franchises. "Deadpool & Wolverine" is about how Deadpool wants to be a hero worthy of the Avengers -- a transparent representation of how Disney acquired Wade's previous owner, 20th Century Fox. Sony's "Spider-Verse" films are at least a tad more creative, using different universes to represent different animation styles.
As a comic fan, it's a bit surprising that Marvel has embraced the multiverse. That storytelling device has always been more DC's thing, going back to 1961's "The Flash of Two Worlds". There is one exception to that rule: the X-Men,...

Like many DC Comics characters, a few different heroes have held the "Hawkgirl" mantle since the character was created in 1940.
The first was Shiera Sanders Hall, with Shayera Hol and Kendra Saunders following. Later, it was established that Shiera was Kendra's ancestor; as for Shayera, she's a separate character who ultimately became Hawkwoman.
We'd expected Superman's Hawkgirl - where she'll be played by Madame Web and The Last of Us star Isabela Merced - to be Kendra, and that's now been confirmed by DC Studios boss and filmmaker James Gunn.
"Today is the anniversary of Kendra Saunders' first appearance as [Hawkgirl]!" he said on Instagram yesterday. "While Kendra took flight in Jsa Secret Files #1 in 1999 under writers James Robinson and David S. Goyer and artists Louis Small Jr. and Michael Bair, Hawkgirl first hit stands in 1940 as Shiera Sanders-Hall in Flash Comics #1 written by Gardner Fox and drawn by Dennis Neville.

James Gunn’s Superman is in production and rumors surrounding the movie have already made it to discussion among fans. A recently rumored plot of the most anticipated DC movie revealed the main villain of the movie is much deadlier.

Following the rumored villain, David Corenswet’s Superman will face one of his greatest nemesis— an alternate version of himself. While there is no official confirmation for the update, it is still quite plausible. Also, Gunn will not need another actor to play the part.

A recent report from scooper @CanWeGetSomeToast revealed that David Corenswet will go toe-to-toe with, well, himself, fighting the ultimate battle against his alternate version Ultraman. The rumor further theorized that Nicholas Hoult’s Lex Luthor would play a major role in bringing the DC villain to life as he would successfully clone Superman.

DC Comics superhero character ‘Hawkgirl’ is played by actress Isabela Merced in the upcoming live-action feature “Superman”:
“…the original ‘Hawkgirl’, aka ‘Shiera Sanders Hall’, was created by writer Gardner Fox and illustrator Dennis Neville…
“…debuting in ‘Flash Comics’ (1940), as the reincarnation of the Egyptian princess ‘Chay-Ara’.
“As the wife of ‘Carter Hall’, also known as ‘Hawkman’. Hawkgirl owes her powers to a belt of ‘Nth’ metal, a substance native to the planet ‘Thanagar’.
“The metal is psycho-reactive, responding to its bearer's thoughts and in its base form has a number of electromagnetic/gravitational properties.
“To the ‘Hawks’, it grants the power of flight, superhuman strength, super-acute vision, and an enhanced healing/regeneration ability…”

Up Front & Letters
Dak uses some of the Up Front space in this issue to publish more letters. It’s all to do with this being the end of Ci’s first year and everyone involved is in a mood to celebrate. The letters are basically singing the praises of a job well done and it showcases how well it is selling across the country. There is nothing to write home about in Up Front. Only more of Dak highlighting a good year and rightfully so. He points out how most of not all of the comics featured in Ci have been hits with the fans. On a personal level, #6 of Comics Interview was a big deal because of fans wanting to know about the fallout from the Jla/Avengers incident. East Coast distribution sold out completely. All the good stuff is in the usual letters pages at the back.

"Batman & Robin" is an infamous movie, in no small part thanks to Arnold Schwarzenegger's turn as the villainous Mr. Freeze. Was the casting of such a big-name star a mandate from Warner Bros? Nope! Director Joel Schumacher personally chose Arnold for the part. Reading Akiva Goldsman's script for the film, Schumacher found the dialogue for Mr. Freeze, intended to be "Shakespearean," to instead be "hysterical. In my head, I was reading Freeze's dialogue as Schwarzenegger."
So, Schumacher called up Arnold and asked him to play the part. As Schwarzenegger recounts in "The Making of 'Batman & Robin' | Behind The Scenes."
"Joel Schumacher came to me and said that he would like me to play Mr. Freeze. 'I would not direct the movie, because I only can do this movie if you play Mr. Freeze.' So, what are you gonna do? I mean, screw up a whole movie?...

Nathan Fillion has joined the cast of “Superman: Legacy” as Green Lantern’s Guy Gardner, along with Isabela Merced who will play Hawkgirl, and Edi Gathegi, who will play Mister Terrific, according to an insider with knowledge of the project.
The trio joins a growing cast for James Gunn’s DC reboot that stars David Corenswet as the Man of Steel, and Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane.
Gardner was introduced in Green Lantern (Vol. 2) #59 by John Broome and Gil Kane. Gardner was initially a second-rate Green Lantern who was passed over in favor of Hal Jordan. However, he later became one of Earth’s greatest protectors and a significant member of the Justice League. Despite his often abrasive personality, Gardner is devoted to the Corps and is a vaunted member of the Green Lantern Honor Guard.

In one week, Warner Bros. Pictures The Flash, directed by Andy Muschietti opens in theaters on June 16.
Ezra Miller reprises their role as Barry Allen in the DC Super Hero’s first-ever standalone feature film. Worlds collide in “The Flash” when Barry uses his superpowers to travel back in time in order to change the events of the past. But when his attempt to save his family inadvertently alters the future, Barry becomes trapped in a reality in which General Zod has returned, threatening annihilation, and there are no Super Heroes to turn to. That is, unless Barry can coax a very different Batman out of retirement and rescue an imprisoned Kryptonian… albeit not the one he’s looking for. Ultimately, to save the world that he is in and return to the future that he knows, Barry’s only hope is to race for his life.

It's safe to say that the cultural influence of the 1966 "Batman" series peaked with the release of the 1966 feature-length spin-off movie. As detailed in "Batman: The Complete History" by Les Daniels, the series was met with declining enthusiasm when returned for a second season and was then canceled by ABC after the third season. Like the concurrently-airing "Star Trek" on NBC, "Batman" was a classic in the making, but cut short for contemporary audiences.
That's not to say the "Batman" team didn't try to save the show. For season 3, they mixed up the formula. To save costs, they cut the two episodes, one-story format -- aired on back-to-back nights -- from previous seasons. This also meant doing away with the trademark comic book-style cliffhangers. However, one innovation meant a budget increase: bringing in a third star alongside Batman (Adam West) and Robin (Burt Ward). That star was Barbara Gordon, daughter...

The developing live-action feature showcasing DC Comics 'sorceress' "Zatanna", following a female descendant of the ' Homo Magi' race, has been canceled at Warner Bros. Discovery:
The character of 'Zatanna Zatara' was created by writer Gardner Fox and artist Murphy Anderson, debuting in "Hawkman" vol. 1 #4 (October-November 1964).

...and 'Sindella', a member of the mystical 'Homo Magi' race.
She is also a direct descendant of the alchemist 'Nicholas Flamel'...
...and the seer 'Nostradamus'.
Zatanna is a powerful sorceress...
...whose abilities are genetic. As a tribute to her father...
...and as a focal point, she casts spells by speaking verbal commands backwards.
On rare occasions, she has cast spells...
...by writing them in her own blood.
In The CW TV series "Smallville" (2010), the character was played by Serinda Swan in the episodes "Icarus", "Warrior" and "Hex".

Major spoilers ahead for "Black Adam."
The Warner Bros. film "Black Adam" is finally out after so many years of waiting. Dwayne Johnson stars as the titular anti-hero from DC Comics, a man who was granted superpowers in the fictional ancient country of Kahndaq, then imprisoned for thousands of years. When he wakes up, he's out for revenge. The Justice Society of America (Jsa) has to either take him down or win him to their side, depending on which member you ask.
Though the Jsa has appeared in animation and on TV, this will be its live-action movie debut. Created by editor Sheldon Mayer and writer Gardner Fox, the Justice Society of America first showed up to fight crime in "All Star Comics" #3 in 1940. This was the very first superhero team-up. The original membership included Green Lantern, Hawkman, Atom, the Flash, Sandman, Spectre, Hourman, and Doctor Fate. They took on...

A first look at “The Flash” dropped during this weekend’s DC FanDome event. The movie stars Ezra Miller, spinning off from “Justice League,” as the titular superhero, and it’s directed by “It” filmmaker Andy Muschietti. Warner Bros. will release the film on November 4, 2022. Watch the footage below.
The screenplay is written by Christina Hodson (“Birds of Prey”) from characters created by Gardner Fox and Harry Lampert. Ezra Miller’s Barry Allen travels back in time to stop his mother’s murder, generating unintended consequences. Joining the cast are Ben Affleck as Bruce Wayne aka Batman; Michael Keaton also as Bruce Wayne aka Batman in an older, alternate universe; Sasha Calle as the Kryptonian Supergirl; and Kiersey Clemons as journalist Iris West, aka Barry’s love interest.
The movie finds the eponymous superhero journeying through the multiverse, which is why both Keaton and Ben Affleck will appear as iterations...

They’re not coy about it in The Suicide Squad marketing. As one of Amanda Waller’s underlings screams with utter joy in trailer, “Oh my God, we’ve got a freaking kaiju up in this shit!” Yep. The apparent lead villain of James Gunn’s wild reimagining of DC’s supervillain team is Starro: a Godzilla-sized alien starfish how has dreams on world domination. That makes sense.
When we sat down to speak with Gunn last month, we brought up the character and just why the filmmaker felt so endeared to this creature that he wanted to see Starro go head to head with his version of the Suicide Squad.
“Starro is hilarious because he’s ridiculous,” Gunn explains. “He’s a giant, cerulean blue starfish, but he’s also fucking terrifying. When I was a kid, I thought that was the scariest thing of all time and also...

Exclusive: Hot off of winning the WGA Award for original screenplay on Sunday night, Promising Young Woman filmmaker Emerald Fennell is set to write the DC movie Zatanna for Bad Robot and Warner Bros. This deal has been done for a while, I understand. No word yet as to whether Fennell will direct.
The character, who is a magician, was created by Gardner Fox and artist Murphy Anderson, making her debut in November 1964’s Hawkman. Like her father Zatara, she has many magical powers, and in that first issue, she’s on a journey to find him. Zatanna has been involved with the Justice League, has had a childhood with Batman and was romantically linked to character John Constantine. The character was played by Serinda Swan for three seasons on the CW’s Smallville.

I’ve always loved the Crime Syndicate characters. They first appeared on the scene in Justice League of America #29 way back in 1964, created by Gardner Fox and Mike Sekowsky. They were from Earth-3, a sort of Mirror Universe bad version of ‘our’ Jla, just without the Star Trek goatees. It was essentially a ‘what if our heroes came from a bad planet?’ What would they be like. Well, Ultraman (Superman), Owlman (Batman), Superwoman (Wonder Woman), Johnny Quick (The Flash), and Power Ring (Green Lantern) sure showed us. They were bad to the bone. They were also entertaining villains, and I collected all their appearances all the way up to their heroic sacrifice in Crisis on Infinite Earths. They have of course returned many times since, in various new incarnations post-Crisis, post Zero Hour, post Infinite Crisis,...

“Leverage” star Aldis Hodge is in talks to play the role of Hawkman opposite Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson in “Black Adam,” DC and New Line’s highly anticipated superhero movie, according to an individual with knowledge of the project.
Hawkman is the name of several DC Comics heroes, but the best known versions are the original incarnation created by Gardner Fox and Dennis Neville in 1940, and a rebooted version created by Gardner Fox and Joe Kubert in 1961, and later revamped by Timothy Truman.
The 1940 character was the alter-ego of archaeologist Carter Hall, who discovers he’s the reincarnation of an ancient Egyptian prince cursed and murdered by an evil priest. Exclusive: I hear that Bad Robot, through its new deal at Warner Media, is exclusively developing both film and TV ideas based on DC’s Justice League Dark universe at Warner Bros.

Michael Mosley is set to portray the nefarious Doctor Light in a recurring role for Season 2 of Titans, the flagship show of the DC Universe subscription streaming site.
Mosley will portray the conveniently named Dr. Arthur Light, a physicist who manipulates light and its properties to launch a criminal career. Since his 1962 debut in Justice League of America No. 12 (in a story by writer Gardner Fox and artist Mike Sekowsky), the scientist criminal has been portrayed in a variety of ways. The relatively minor character was revamped as a comedic persona in the 1980s, for instance, but wa taken in a far different direction in 2004 when the Identity Crisis series presented him as a ruthless rapist in its controversial but popular story arc.
Titans returns with weekly episodes on Sept. 6th. Mosley will play opposite Brenton Twaites, Anna Diop, Teagan Croft, and Ryan Potter. Created by Greg Berlanti...

"Away Mission" hits the right balance between Young Justice: Outsiders action and character growth.
This Young Justice review contains spoilers.
Young Justice Season 3 Episode 5
So far, Young Justice: Outsiders has wasted no time reminding us of how good the show is in every way. The writing is top shelf, the animation is excellent, and every episode, a different voice actor gives us an exceptional performance. In the first episode, it was Khary Payton. Last episode, Zehra Fazal (Halo) shone. And in "Away Mission," Jason Spisak returns as something completely different.
When we talked to the folks behind Young Justice: Outsiders about this season, they made a point of bringing up that Spisak was giving one of their favorite performances of the show, and it's not hard to figure out why this episode. He was the voice of Wally West for the first two seasons. He was in...

Exclusive: It’s been seven years and seven months since the release of Green Lantern, but the film’s historic failure still glows brightly in the memory of Warner Bros executives and fans alike. That’s one reason the studio has struggled to decide how best to revamp a property that remains far too prominent in DC Comics lore to otherwise leave sitting on a shelf.
The latest word is that producer-writer Geoff Johns is working on a script that will reinvent Green Lantern, but the details are scant. If Johns is looking to the publishing history for inspiration there’s plenty of material — this year marks the 60th anniversary of the deep-space hero’s debut so there’s plenty of of mythology to chose from. But the most screen-ready version of the Emerald Crusader may actually be the very latest one.

We're hunting for all the DC Comics easter eggs in Elseworlds, this year's DC TV Arrowverse crossover.
This article consists of nothing but Elseworlds spoilers.
The 2018 DC TV Arrowverse crossover was a big one! While Legends of Tomorrow didn't join the party this time, The Flash, Arrow, and Supergirl took us to multiple (if not quite infinite) Earths to take on The Monitor, Dr. Destiny, Amazo, and other foes. Oh, and we got to meet Batwoman, too. And did we mention Superman and Lois Lane?
Let's get to work on this. If you spot anything we missed, drop it in the comments, or give Mike a shout on Twitter, and we'll update this with more!
But let's just start with the name, shall we? "Elseworlds" was the name of a line of DC Comics that told stories outside the normal continuity. Batman: Gotham by Gaslight,...

Exclusive: Kevin Durand has joined the cast of the upcoming DC Universe series Swamp Thing in the role of Jason Woodrue, the brilliant but abrasive scientist who longtime fans of DC Comics also know as the transmogrified super-villain called Floronic Man.
Durand has been a supervillain before — he portrayed Fred Dukes (a.k.a. The Blob) in X-Men Origins: Wolverine — but he may be best known for his television work, which includes Lost (as the mercenary Martin Keamy) and The Strain.
The Canadian actor started his career in stand-up comedy and took a detour toward Broadway before finding his stride as a screen actor. His feature-film credits include 3:10 To Yuma, Devil’s Knot, Fruitvale Station, Noah, Smokin’ Aces and Robin Hood. Durand will also be seen in the upcoming film Primal opposite Nicolas Cage.
No release date has been set for Swamp Thing,...
