When I saw John Carpenter perform at NYC's Terminal 5 in November of 2017, he introduced his band's version of the "Halloween" theme with a curiously cryptic message. Before dropping the theme's iconic piano-led 5/4 beat, Carpenter simply said to the sold-out crowd: "Remember ... love never dies."
The application of that phrase to "Halloween" holds just as much ambiguity and eerie mystery as Carpenter's immortal 1978 classic does. Throughout that film, Carpenter and his co-writer and producer, Debra Hill, introduce numerous subtexts when it comes to the unknowable origin, motivations, and inner thoughts of "The Shape" aka Michael Myers; not only are there hints toward some psychosexual hang-ups he may have, but the character is deliberately played by multiple actors.
About 10 years prior to that concert, Dimension Films released writer and director Rob Zombie's remake of Carpenter's film, "Halloween." It was met with an almost overwhelming amount of revulsion, as seen in its...

Love him or hate him, Rob Zombie has become one of the prominent and unique voices in the modern horror landscape. His style is immediately recognizable, his choices in aesthetics, casting, and music practically codified. I say this not to criticize Zombie; he’s one of my favorite current filmmakers, and I like or love nearly every single one of his movies.
With two of his films celebrating an anniversary this year – Lords of Salem turns 10, House of 1000 Corpses turns 20 – it seemed like the right time to revisit his filmmaking career so far.
Today we’re ranking Rob Zombie’s entire live action filmography to date…

From huggable dolls coming to life as voodoo-powered murderers to lovable St. Bernards becoming rabid monsters, there’s nothing more disturbing than the subversion of innocence. That’s why the horror genre is simply chock-full of creepy children. From ghostly apparitions to undead cannibals, these pint-sized horrors make great villains precisely because of their disarming demeanor. After all, like Narciso Ibáñez’s 1976 film once asked: Who Can Kill a Child?
Of course, not all killer kids are created equal, and after our previous article celebrating some of the best Final Kids in horror, we thought that it was time to give the juvenile villains a chance to shine with a list celebrating six of the best evil child performances in horror movies. After all, every evildoer has to start somewhere…

In discussions about slasher infamy, all roads lead to Haddonfield. The Halloween franchise has amassed a convoluted franchise canon since the late 1970s, filled with retcons and redos as recently as Halloween Ends — including Rob Zombie‘s universally divisive 2007 remake. Countless horror screenwriters, including Josh Stolberg (no stranger to “Revenge of the Remakes”), attempted to plot an angle that’d continue Michael Myers’ story after Halloween: Resurrection — but the tragic 2005 death of producer Moustapha Akkad left the franchise in his son Malek’s hands and veered into a new direction. It was only a matter of time before Halloween would become another 2000s remake statistic, with no shortage of filmmakers lining up to pitch their spin on Haddonfield’s boogeyman.
In terms of “remake justification,” finding standout filmmakers to inject their potent flavors into long-standing intellectual properties is the ultimate reason. Zombie’s carnie-sleaze style slathered in grime, gore, and...

When John Carpenter made "Halloween" in 1978, it was still the early days of the slasher genre. Early slashers, a connoisseur of the genre might notice, spent more time establishing the state and story of their human protagonists than they did their featured serial killers. It wouldn't be until the genre became overrun with innumerable sequels that the killer would become the main character. Eventually, the slasher genre became, essentially, the Supervillain Movie. Fans came not to see the resolute heroes who would destroy evil, but the evil itself. Freddy is, after all, more interesting, fun, and charismatic than any of his victims.
By the time Rob Zombie remade "Halloween" in 2007, that series' central murderer, Michael Myers, was at the very heart of the story. The bulk of Zombie's film was set fifteen years in the past, and explored the bleak and abusive home life of a 10-year-old Michael (Daeg Faerch...

The premise of Killer Therapy is quite simple… It’s We Need to Talk About Kevin minus the magic. I wrote that line, about 20 minutes into the film, and it is broadly true but, having got an hour in, it seems churlish and unfair. Having seen the film to the conclusion, I can say this is 1 hour and 20 minutes of carefully crafted and developed film. Then 10 minutes of silly, jokeresque stabbing.
It is really disappointing to say that, because right up to the end of the film, this was going to be an extremely positive review.

Rob Zombie’s Halloween remake and its sequel are divisive with audiences, largely due to their replacement of the subtlety of John Carpenter’s iconic film with excessive violence and a generally bleak atmosphere. However, one aspect of the 2007 effort that does work reasonably well is the use of young Michael Myers, as played by Daeg Faerch, whose performance has been praised by high profile fans of the picture. The actor was switched out for Halloween II with Chase Wright Vanek, though, raising the question of why Zombie recast the role.
According to ScreenRant, the reasons behind the move are straightforward, even though they might be exaggerating a bit when they say that it was an “incredibly controversial choice” to replace Faerch. The explanation given for the decision is that the performer was intended to reprise the character of young Myers, even recording screen tests, but had grown too much to return.

Quentin Tarantino has been making the rounds to promote the release of Once Upon a Time… In Hollywood on home video and while speaking to Consequence of Sound, he gave an update on his Star Trek movie, how he almost wrote Halloween 6 way back when and also shared his thoughts on Rob Zombie’s often maligned Halloween films.
Though he hated the first movie initially, the director says it eventually grew on him and now he counts himself a big fan of both, explaining:
“I am a big fan of the Rob Zombie Halloweens. When I saw the first one, I didn’t like it at all. I didn’t like the aesthetic. Happy Halloween, Trailers From Hell miscreants!
Roughly 14 million folks stateside as of this writing have seen the latest Halloween film (based on its current $132.3 million domestic box office take divided by the average ticket price), which premiered to stellar reviews and brisk business. Upon leaving their local theater, I’m sure a lot of those 14 million folks had questions. Some people inevitably asked themselves, “Wait — I thought Laurie Strode was Michael Myers’ sister? And that she died in a car accident, orphaning a daughter named Jamie (Danielle Harris) to fend off her evil uncle?” Still others, I expect, asked themselves, “Wait — I thought Laurie Strode was Michael Myers’ sister? And that she faked her death in a car accident, and she and her son John (Josh Hartnett) ably fended off her evil brother?” Well, both those realities are true. This October signals the release of a Halloween movie unlike any other.
Whereas before we slogged through one derivative sequel after another, Blumhouse and David Gordon Green have crafted their horror film in such a way that it honors John Carpenter’s original classic… and little else. It’s due to light up theaters in October, but there’s another Halloween-themed product about to release into the wild as well. We’ll give you a clue: Rob Zombie.
Yes, the director’s own unique spin on Michael Myers is finally getting a Blu-ray steelbook, and it’s coming sooner than you think. As spotted by the good folks at Dread Central, Amazon has listed the 2007 horror pic for a Blu-ray release on October 2nd, meaning you’ll be able to get in the spirit of all things Haddonfield before the real deal arrives three weeks later.

"There's some rumors about you..." Screen Media Films has debuted the first official trailer for an indie thriller titled Josie, starring Sophie Turner (as seen in Barely Lethal, X-Men: Apocalypse, and on "Game of Thrones") as the titular character Josie. The film's plot is actually focused on a mysterious man named Hank, played by Dylan McDermott, who keeps a close eye on her. Josie stirs things up when she arrives in a Southern town called Huntsville, and Hank takes a liking to her, attempting to protect her from a boy she's been spending time with. The film's full cast includes Jack Kilmer, Daeg Faerch, Kurt Fuller, Robin Bartlett, Lombardo Boyar, and George Todd McLachlan. Yeah, this looks like a totally compelling Southern thriller, with a strong lead performance by Turner, who also plays Phoenix in the X-Men movies. Halloween is coming and we thought with all those kids that are out trick or treating, dressing up to be grown ups, that we would give these halfstacks their due, children can be creepy as well. The staff has got together and compiled thirteen films where children are to be feared.
The Children From The Children
Tom Shankland’s film shares themes in common with a couple other “youth gone mad” films of the past, but these kids are terrifying in their own way. A virus of some sort is turning the children into blodthirsty, malevolent creatures. They still look sweet, but they’re ready to kill, kill, kill. The scary imps in Cronenberg’s The Brood are spooky, but nothing freaks me out more than a normal looking child becoming violent. Kids toys become tools of murder here, and a parent’s worst nightmare is born. This well directed...

Throughout the month of October, Rob will be taking a trip down memory lane, examining the Halloween series as the films exist in chronological order.
Rob Zombie's follow-up to his prequel/remake interpretation of John Carpenter's immortal classic. Oddly enough, Daeg Faerch doesn't return for this follow-up as young Michael Myers; instead, we get some kid who's nowhere near as creepy. The good news is that Sheri Moon Zombie, who was brilliant in the first film, returns, reprising Myers' mother. I'll be examined if she's not a genuinely powerful performer in this flick after playing a howling lunatic in Zombie's previous efforts.

Continuing the nightmare he began two years ago, Rob Zombie has returned for another go-around with the Haddonfield slasher, Michael Myers. Of course, the nightmare he began with his remake of John Carpenter’s 1978 classic, ‘Halloween,’ was not just a nightmare for the characters in the film. Many believed Zombie tried too hard to recreate Carpenter’s film, a la Gus Van Sant with ‘Psycho,’ while others felt the film deviated far too much. Still others, myself included, felt Zombie’s first effort with these characters was jarring, disjointed, and, oftentimes, uncomfortable to watch. Much of that probably had to do with Zombie’s own discomfort in trying to make his own film amidst the overall narrative of something nearly 30 years old. However, with ‘Halloween II,’ Zombie has found his comfort. No longer plagued by the belief he had to please all the people all the time, his latest film feels much more his own,...

There’s a subtheme running through Halloween II about the exploitation of the Michael Myers name for profit, and Exhibit A is Halloween II itself. The movie that Rob Zombie first said he’d never make, and then got rushed to the screen by Dimension Films when he changed his mind, adds nothing to the mythology established by John Carpenter and Debra Hill in 1978 and embellished by Zombie two years ago, reduces Michael from a malefic All Hallows’ spirit to a lumbering, easily distracted hulk and, most crucially, is almost never scary.
Whether due to the hurried development and production or to rumored behind-the-scenes meddling, Halloween II feels half-hearted and even less thought out. Nowhere is this more apparent than in the numerous scenes in which Michael (Tyler Mane) has visions of his mother Deborah (Sheri Moon Zombie) and his younger self (Chase Wright Vanek, a pallid replacement for the...

In case you thought “H2″ would be lighter, fluffier, and more family friendly than the last one (though I haven’t a clue why you would think that, what are you, some kind of idiot?), these latest batch of pics from the movie should dispel that notion for good. Malcolm McDowell, Scout Taylor-Compton, Tyler Mane, Daeg Faerch, Bill Fagerbakke, Daniel Roebuck, Mark Christopher Lawrence, Chris Hardwick, Ezra Buzzington, and Jeffrey Daniel Phillips returns to flee the unstoppable killer in the sequel, which opens this Friday.

Another day, another victim of Michael Myers surfaces over at Rob Zombie’s Myspace page. This time, it’s a poor lass who stood in the way of Myers as he stalked his way through Haddonfield General after Laurie Strode. Shoulda run for the hills, toots. Returning players for “H2: Halloween” include Malcolm McDowell, Scout Taylor-Compton, Tyler Mane, Daeg Faerch, Bill Fagerbakke, Daniel Roebuck, Mark Christopher Lawrence, Chris Hardwick, Ezra Buzzington, and Jeffrey Daniel Phillips. While the trailer hit the web just yesterday, writer-director Rob Zombie is continuing his onslaught on his blog by releasing yet another new look at his sequel to his reboot of Halloween. Beyond the break you can get your first ever look at Chase Wright Vanek as the new young Michael Myers in his clown costume in H2 Halloween 2. Chase replaced Daeg Faerch earlier this year when Daeg showed up to set standing nearly as tall as Sheri Moon (puberty is a bitch). Dimension has slated H2 for release on August 28th. Scout Taylor-Compton, Tyler Mane, Chase Wright Vanek, Malcolm McDowell, Sheri Moon Zombie, Danielle Harris, Ezra Buzzington, Brea Grant, Chris Hardwick, Matt Bush, Dayton Callie, Richard Brake, Howard Hesseman, Bill Fagerbakke, Bill Moseley and Caroline Williams all star in the latest adventure of Michael Myers.

Rob Zombie has already said that “H2: Halloween” the sequel is all him, and has nothing at all to do with the previous “Halloween” franchise, #2 or otherwise. And in his latest blog, Zombie also defends his reasons for returning to do a sequel after having said over and over that he would never ever do a sequel. According to Zombie, it took him a year and a half, but he realized there were more stories he wanted to tell, and thus, he returned. Plus, two more pics from “H2″, including more Michael Myers in a hoody. The sequel stars Malcolm McDowell, Scout Taylor-Compton, Tyler Mane, Daeg Faerch, Bill Fagerbakke, Daniel Roebuck, Mark Christopher Lawrence, Chris Hardwick, Ezra Buzzington, Jeffrey Daniel Phillips, and is directed by Rob Zombie. IFC Films, which has previously brought the likes of Larry Fessenden’s The Last Winter and Eric Nicholas’ Alone With Her to big and small screens, has announced a full lineup of fright fare for its Festival Direct video-on-demand service. These join such previously announced titles as the very different zombie movies Pontypool and Dead Snow, which hit VOD the same days they open in limited theatrical release (May 29 and June 12 respectively), and such VOD-only offerings as The Objective, Nightmare and Sauna.
Debuting April 8 and available on-demand through July 7 will be Hush (pictured), from British writer/director Mark Tonderai, in which a young couple on a road trip become the prey of a deranged truck driver. Look for a set-visit report on this film in Fango #285, on sale in June.

According to Rob Zombie’s Myspace page, it only took him and the cast and crew of “H2″, the sequel to his “Halloween” reboot 35 days to shoot the sequel. 35 days! I didn’t think major Hollywood productions could shoot movies in 35 days anymore unless it was a Clint Eastwood shoot. In any case, along with letting us know that the movie has wrapped production (which means the sequel will hit theaters in about five months), Zombie gave us our first glimpse of Michael Myers in his famous mask. It is, of course, scarred and ripped, because that’s just how Rob Zombie rolls, bitches. The sequel sees Scout Taylor-Compton returning as Laurie Strode, the obsession of unstoppable killing machine Michael Myers (Tyler Mane). Heroes’ Brea Grant and Angela Trimbur help fill out the cast of would-be victims as Laurie’s new roommates. I’m going to go out on a...

Die-hard Halloween fans may be shocked, appalled—outraged, even. Michael Myers, their beloved Shape, has a new look (again)…and, horror of horrors, spends a certain amount of time on screen minus his signature mask. Why, how and where, Fango will not reveal at this point; allow writer/director Rob Zombie to explain…
“This is not a remake of [1981’s] Halloween II; this is totally my thing, my story,” he says, a serious look in his eyes as the crew breaks for lunch. “After I made Halloween, I was totally burned out. I said I’d never make a sequel. But after every record, every tour, I say the same thing.”
And now Zombie is back at the helm of Dimension’s sequel (currently slated for an August 28 release) to his 2007 hit reworking of the John Carpenter classic. So, too, are Malcolm McDowell as Dr. Loomis, the feisty Scout Taylor-Compton (pictured) as Laurie Strode,...

Director Rob Zombie updated his MySpace page with a photo of Chase Vanek as the new young Michael Myers from the upcoming "Halloween" sequel, which is tentatively titled "Halloween 2: The Devil Walks Among Us." Zombie writes: "Here he is for the first time Chase Vanek the new young Michael Myers. Chase has been kicking ass on set and we are sure you will love him as much as we do. Chase's favorite question to ask me is "When do I get to kill someone?" Kind of reminds me of another young Michael I used to know." Zombie was first trying to get Daeg Faerch (Hancock) to reprise his role as young Michael in the sequel, but Faerch is no longer a little kid and has grown quite a big since the first film.
