Exclusive: Disney+ has elevated its scripted and unscripted bosses in Emea.

Rivals commissioner Lee Mason becomes Executive Director of Scripted Originals, Emea Disney+, while Sean Doyle has been given the same title on the unscripted side. Their roles remain similar and they have not been given additional responsibilities.

The pair of commissioners in Diego Londono’s Emea content team have been with Disney for more than three years and both previously worked for Channel 4. The execs took to LinkedIn to say they were “happy to share the news.”

Despite Sally Rooney having two of her novels adapted into television series, fans can’t expect her third novel to hit the screen anytime soon.

In a conversation with The New York Times, the Normal People author revealed that she is not accepting any offers to adapt her 2021 third book, Beautiful World, Where Are You, following the success of adaptations Normal People and Conversations With Friends, both of which aired on BBC Three/Hulu.

“So far I have decided not to accept any offers to option the rights for that book,” Rooney told the publication. “I felt like it was just time to take a break from that and let the book be its own thing for a while.”

Rooney, who has been described as a generational literary voice previously dubbed the “first great millennial novelist” or “Salinger for the Snapchat generation,” received critical acclaim for her 2018 novel Normal People.

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, the 36-years-in-the-waiting sequel to Burton’s 1988 cult horror-comedy hit, was greeted with a warm standing ovation at this year’s Venice Film Festival from the crowd upon its world premiere on Wednesday night.

Now, Variety reports that Obituary season 2 has been given the greenlight and, like its predecessor, is expected to consist of six episodes.

Written by Ray Lawlor (Le Ceangal) and directed by John Hayes (Dublin Murders) and Oonagh Kearney (Vardy vs. Rooney), Obituary has the following synopsis: 24-year-old Elvira Clancy is feeling a little unfulfilled, although she adores her new job writing obituaries, but when her newspaper falls on hard times and her boss cuts her salary, she finds herself being paid per obituary overnight. When she “accidentally” kills a nasty piece of work in the town, she discovers she might have a previously untapped bloodlust!

She relishes using ever more crafty methods to kill off the town’s unpleasant residents while making them look like accidents.

Francis Ford Coppola’s passion project, Megalopolis, is set to hit theaters in a matter of weeks and part of the distribution deal of his self-financed film included that he would also take control of marketing. According to World of Reel, the Godfather director has hired the company Utopia to help him out and is said they were told to “implement specialty marketing, word-of-mouth, and non-traditional theatrical distribution initiatives targeting moviegoers.”

This eccentric brand of viral marketing has started to form on social media as the official film’s account amusingly inquired if they could quote a user’s bewildered comment as part of the marketing of the film.

This isn’t only the premise at the heart of Robert Schwartzman’s well-meaning yet timid feature “The Good Half,” but also a recurrent foundation on which many a melancholic American dramedy, from “Elizabethtown” to “Garden State” to “This Is Where I Leave You.”

Pointing out this thematic repetition isn’t necessarily to knock down one of cinema’s favorite topics — after all, familial grief is among the most shared and relatable of human aches. And what are movies, if not an echo of those experiences? But you still go into a film like “The Good Half” hoping that it has something of its own to say on the pains of bereavement. Instead, it just lands like a medley of similar films that came before it.

Marvel Studios’ Deadpool & Wolverine hits theaters July 26, but the review embargo for the film broke on Tuesday, and the early reaction from critics has been largely positive.

The third Deadpool movie, and first to be included in the wider Marvel Cinematic Universe, stars Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman as the titular characters and is directed by Shawn Levy. The cast also includes The Crown‘s Emma Corrin as Cassandra Nova and Succession‘s Matthew Macfadyen as Tva (Time Variance Authority) agent Mr. Paradox.

As of Tuesday evening, the review aggregator sites had wildly divergent scores for Deadpool 3. On Rotten Tomatoes, the film’s score clocked in at 80 percent from 140 reviews, while over at Metacritic, the score was a more muted 54 percent from 45 reviews.

The reviews are in for “Deadpool & Wolverine,” and the snarky superhero isn’t wooing critics quite as positively as “Deadpool” and “Deadpool 2” did in 2016 and 2018.

“Deadpool & Wolverine” is the first R-rated Marvel Cinematic Universe movie and the only MCU theatrical release of 2024. The film is also the first time Deadpool will team up with Disney and Kevin Feige.

Industry inside jokes and self-deprecation run rampant in the film with some critics calling it “amusing and exhausting.” You will hopefully utter at least one chuckle throughout the 127 minute feature, though.

“When you throw 7,000 jokes at the screen hoping something will stick, a few of them certainly will,” Jordan Hoffman from Entertainment Weekly said. “I did laugh several times; I am not a monster.”

Carla Balenda, who starred alongside Dana Andrews and Claude Rains in the Rko Pictures thriller Sealed Cargo and portrayed Mickey Rooney’s girlfriend on the NBC sitcom Hey Mulligan, has died. She was 98.

Balenda, billed at times as Sally Bliss, her birth name, died April 9 of natural causes at the Motion Picture & Television Country House and Hospital in Woodland Hills, her grandson Jim Martin told The Hollywood Reporter.

She also played a nurse on the 1955-56 syndicated series The Adventures of Dr. Fu Manchu, starring Glen Gordon, and recurred as Miss Hazlitt, Timmy’s (Jon Provost) teacher, on CBS’ Lassie from 1958-63.

In Sealed Cargo (1951), Balenda portrayed a woman who is aboard a fishing trawler bound for Newfoundland when she and the skipper (Andrews) wind up tangling in the North Atlantic with Nazis led by Rains’ character. She often said it was her favorite role.

Despite receiving divisive reactions at the Cannes Film Festival, Lionsgate is ready to risk it for the biscuit with Francis Ford Coppola’s Megalopolis. Lionsgate is bringing Coppola’s science-fiction drama to theaters in the United States and Canada, says Adam Fogelson, chair of the Lionsgate Motion Picture Group. The deal spins out of Lionsgate’s existing relationship with Coppola’s banner Zoetrope Studios after Lionsgate distributed Coppola’s Apocalypse Now Final Cut, The Conversation, The Colton Club Encore, The Man and His Dream, and One From the Heart: Reprise. Megalopolis will be released in domestic theaters and IMAX on September 27, 2024.

Disney has spent £3.5B ($4.5B) on production in the UK since 2019, Emea boss Jan Koeppen has revealed.

Koeppen, who has been in the role for five years, rolled out a wealth of stats that focused on Disney’s long connection with, and long-term commitment to, the UK, as he addressed the Deloitte and Enders Media and Telecoms 2024 and Beyond Conference in London.

Koeppen said tentpoles like Deadpool & Wolverine, one of 20 Disney films and series to have been produced at Pinewood over the past five years, allows the Mouse House to form deep connections with locals.

“Whenever I’m at Pinewood, what makes the biggest impression on me is the scale of the operation, the diversity of skills,” said Koeppen. “We’re talking about thousands of people, all part of the wider ecosystem. Warner Bros Discovery UK & Ireland has ordered Taylor Swift vs Scooter Braun: Bad Blood (working title), a two-part doc series.

“The Good Half,” a comedic drama starring Nick Jonas, has been acquired by Utopia and will be released in theaters this summer.

Utopia, which was co-founded by “The Good Half” director Robert Schwartzman, is partnering with Fathom Events for preview screenings on July 23 and July 25 in 900 theaters in North America. Those showtimes will feature a virtual Q&a with Jonas and Schwartzman, moderated by “Mad Men” actor Kiernan Shipka. “The Good Half” will likely get a traditional theatrical release later in the year.

“The Good Half” premiered last June at the Tribeca Festival, where it was seeking distribution. Though Schwartzman runs Utopia, representatives stress that he independently produced “The Good Half” before his own company acquired the film nearly a year later.
