As a Halloween treat, Neon released a trailer for Steven Soderbergh’s upcoming horror film Presence.
The movie, set to hit theaters Jan. 24, 2025, is about a family who moves into a new house and then notices an unnerving presence in the home. To make it even more unsettling, the film is shot from the point of view of the ghost, and the camera moves throughout the house as if the viewer is following the family.
The cast ensemble includes Lucy Liu, Chris Sullivan, Eddy Maday, Callina Liang and Julia Fox. It’s produced by Julie M. Anderson and Ken Meyers, with screenwriting by David Koepp, who also worked with Soderbergh on Kimi.
In his review, The Hollywood Reporter’s David Rooney, praised the film’s casting, saying it “could not be better” and that Liu is “terrific” in the role of Rebekah “allowing her to show some hard edges but...

Exclusive: Disney+ has elevated its scripted and unscripted bosses in Emea.
Rivals commissioner Lee Mason becomes Executive Director of Scripted Originals, Emea Disney+, while Sean Doyle has been given the same title on the unscripted side. Their roles remain similar and they have not been given additional responsibilities.
The pair of commissioners in Diego Londono’s Emea content team have been with Disney for more than three years and both previously worked for Channel 4. The execs took to LinkedIn to say they were “happy to share the news.”
Mason took charge of Disney+’s Emea scripted responsibilities last year when Johanna Devereaux moved to Apple TV+. He oversees Disney+ Emea scripted launches along with the development slate and has recently seen the rollout of one of his most high-profile, Rivals. Speaking to Deadline last week, Rivals exec Dominic Treadwell-Collins hailed Mason’s understanding of the project’s aims from the get go.

Miracles happen, and 20 years after The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement premiered, Disney ordered Princess Diaries 3.
Anne Hathaway announced the project in early October, saying she would return to Genova.
I was a diehard fan of the original 2001 film and its 2004 sequel, which launched Anne Hathaway’s acting career.
(Disney Plus/ Screenshot)
Typically, I dislike reboots and revivals that occur years later.
Still, this one has the potential to be nostalgic for long-time fans and inspire a new generation to appreciate Anne Hathaway and Julie Andrews’ talents.
The original film featured Hathaway’s Mia Thermopolis, who learns she’s the heir apparent to the Genovian throne. She learned how to become a princess, and Andrews’ Queen Clarisse learned how to become a loving grandmother and a regal queen.
The Princess Diaries navigated Mia’s awkward teen years with the help of her grandmother, her driver Joseph, and her friends Lily and Michael Moscovitz.

Sally Rooney recently stunned the entertainment world when in a newspaper interview, she said her experience of adapting her much-loved coming-of-age novel Normal People for the BBC and Hulu left her feeling like TV was “not a world where I belonged.” Accordingly, the in-demand writer has since said no to offers to option her third book, 2021’s Beautiful World, Where Are You. The same will be likely for her latest, Intermezzo.
Rooney’s decision was especially surprising given the TV market has been so driven by book IP, with option prices rising sharply and demand bigger than ever. In fact, around a year ago, we hear drama commissioners put out a call to TV makers. The broad message was “IP over original ideas as often as possible.” While books have long been the engine of television and film, the notion everything must come with proof of concept has shifted the dial.

P Diddy aka Sean Combs is gaining a lot of fire as of late because of all the alleged trouble his notorious parties have caused over the years. Since a lot of the s-xual misconduct accusations towards young talents against him have stemmed from these very infamous throwdowns, multiple celebrities who attended these events are also getting embroiled in this mess now.

One of these celebrities included an English professional football manager and former player, Wayne Rooney. As it turns out, the 38-year-old spent a whopping fortune to win an auction that could have had him spending a night out partying with the now-disgraced music mogul. But while his actions may seem questionable to many now, it was all for a good cause.

There are three generally accepted rules for living a long and happy life. 1) You don’t spit into the wind. That’s really just common sense. 2) You don’t tug on Superman’s cape. 3) By God, if you really want to live a long life, you 100%, not under any circumstances, for any reason, F*ck with John Wick’s dog. We have all learned nothing good happens from making John Wick angry. While we’ve already had one spin-off of the successful franchise, the upcoming film Ballerina promises to take us even further into the crazy underworld of one of the most fascinating franchises to emerge in a long time.

Despite Sally Rooney having two of her novels adapted into television series, fans can’t expect her third novel to hit the screen anytime soon.
In a conversation with The New York Times, the Normal People author revealed that she is not accepting any offers to adapt her 2021 third book, Beautiful World, Where Are You, following the success of adaptations Normal People and Conversations With Friends, both of which aired on BBC Three/Hulu.

Rooney, who has been described as a generational literary voice previously dubbed the “first great millennial novelist” or “Salinger for the Snapchat generation,” received critical acclaim for her 2018 novel Normal People.

Normal People writer Sally Rooney isn’t accepting options to turn her third book into a TV show. More on Rooney’s comments below.
Normal People, BBC Three and Hulu’s wildly popular adaptation of Sally Rooney’s novel of the same name, felt like a major milestone in contemporary British television. Set between previous John Wick films, “Ballerina” focuses on a skilled assassin named Rooney seeking revenge after criminals kill her family. Having proven her worth as an action star in No Time to Die and even in the critically blasted Ghosted, fans expect the actress would be impeccable opposite Reeves. However, if one is to look at their shared filmography, only one thing can be said: the duo is a disastrous couple at the box office.

The highly anticipated film “Ballerina,” set in the world of the “John Wick” franchise, has undergone additional filming that star Ana de Armas says will improve the movie. De Armas, who plays the assassin Rooney in the film, spoke recently at the Toronto International Film Festival where she promoted a separate project.
Though originally planned for summer 2024, “Ballerina” was pushed back to a June 2025 release to allow for reshoots. De Armas said these reshoots were crucial, explaining that while additional photography can be a cause for concern, the new footage for “Ballerina” is “really spectacular.” Producer Chad Stahelski, known for his impressive action scenes in the “John Wick” films, directed the reshoots.
Set between the third and fourth “John Wick” movies, “Ballerina” follows Rooney seeking vengeance. The film smoothly incorporates characters from the franchise, including Ian McShane returning as Winston and Lance Reddick as Charon. Most exciting for fans, said de Armas,...

Jennifer Lopez recorded her second studio album, J.Lo, in roughly a quarter of the time that it took her to record her debut, On the 6. While Lopez is confident in her abilities, she grappled with uncertainty as she recorded her debut album. According to one of her producers, Lopez frequently needed reassurance while recording On the 6.
Jennifer Lopez had concerns about 1 of her albums
After establishing herself as an actor, Lopez began to focus on building a music career. She got her start in Hollywood as a dancer and said she missed that type of performance. At this point, Lopez had gained a significant level of popularity through her starring role in Selena. Still, she wasn’t sure she was making the right move with her music career.
“She changed drastically, in a good way, from the last record,” co-executive producer Cory Rooney told Rolling Stone of the process of recording J.

Brady Corbet’s The Brutalist was the talk of the Lido on Sunday as the seven-years-in-the-making period epic finally received its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival’s historic Sala Grande cinema.
The audience inside the premiere erupted in applause as the credits began to roll on the film’s epic three-hour, 35-minute running time, giving Corbet and his cast a rousing, festival-best 13-minute standing ovation. Stars Adrien Brody and Felicity Jones looked teary at times by the effusive reaction to the movie.
The Hollywood Reporter gave the film a rave review, with chief critic David Rooney describing The Brutalist as “a monumental symphony of the immigrant experience” with a “devastating” performance by Brody as Tóth.
The Brutalist has all the thematic heft and intellectual rigor befitting its subject: The historical trauma and artistic vision that gave rise to the great works of mid-century American Brutalist architecture. But Corbet...

Tim Burton couldn’t have wished for a better return from the dead.
Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, the 36-years-in-the-waiting sequel to Burton’s 1988 cult horror-comedy hit, was greeted with a warm standing ovation at this year’s Venice Film Festival from the crowd upon its world premiere on Wednesday night.
As the audience applauded for a nearly four-minute standing ovation, the cast joined together in the balcony for bows as Burton clutched his girlfriend, Monica Bellucci. He then led the team to exit the theater together. Dafoe and Theroux went to the stairs first, followed by Ryder and Ortega who sat next to one another. As Warner Bros. chiefs Pam Abdy and Michael DeLuca exited behind the cast, they accepted congratulations and Abdy was overheard telling festival director Alberto Balbero “thank you for having us.”

After airing on Rte in Ireland last September, all six episodes of the darkly comedic crime drama Obituary made their way over to the Hulu streaming service in November. Now, Variety reports that Obituary season 2 has been given the greenlight and, like its predecessor, is expected to consist of six episodes.
Written by Ray Lawlor (Le Ceangal) and directed by John Hayes (Dublin Murders) and Oonagh Kearney (Vardy vs. Rooney), Obituary has the following synopsis: 24-year-old Elvira Clancy is feeling a little unfulfilled, although she adores her new job writing obituaries, but when her newspaper falls on hard times and her boss cuts her salary, she finds herself being paid per obituary overnight. When she “accidentally” kills a nasty piece of work in the town, she discovers she might have a previously untapped bloodlust!
She relishes using ever more crafty methods to kill off the town’s unpleasant residents while making them look like accidents.

Francis Ford Coppola’s passion project, Megalopolis, is set to hit theaters in a matter of weeks and part of the distribution deal of his self-financed film included that he would also take control of marketing. According to World of Reel, the Godfather director has hired the company Utopia to help him out and is said they were told to “implement specialty marketing, word-of-mouth, and non-traditional theatrical distribution initiatives targeting moviegoers.”
This eccentric brand of viral marketing has started to form on social media as the official film’s account amusingly inquired if they could quote a user’s bewildered comment as part of the marketing of the film.
However, in the more traditional manner, the studio has also released a new poster for the film, which you can view below:

“Elizabethtown. ““Dean.” “August: Osage County.” All somewhat recent cinematic efforts of the past several decades revolving around a person or two dealing with the passing of a family member, more often than not, accompanied by a return to their childhood home or small town that will itself become far more inevitably meaningful by film’s end. Directed by renaissance man Robert Schwartzman, having helmed such efforts as “Dreamland,” “The Unicorn,” and “The Argument” in addition to fronting indie group Rooney and appearing onscreen as the dreamboat love interest in “The Princess Diaries,” there’s a smattering of ambition present throughout his latest project “The Good Half, “one that can easily find itself in line with the contemporaries above but can’t help but repeatedly trip over its storytelling shoelaces in the process.

A reserved man with some unresolved childhood issues returns to his hometown for the funeral of a parent. This isn’t only the premise at the heart of Robert Schwartzman’s well-meaning yet timid feature “The Good Half,” but also a recurrent foundation on which many a melancholic American dramedy, from “Elizabethtown” to “Garden State” to “This Is Where I Leave You.”
Pointing out this thematic repetition isn’t necessarily to knock down one of cinema’s favorite topics — after all, familial grief is among the most shared and relatable of human aches. And what are movies, if not an echo of those experiences? But you still go into a film like “The Good Half” hoping that it has something of its own to say on the pains of bereavement. Instead, it just lands like a medley of similar films that came before it.

Marvel Studios’ Deadpool & Wolverine hits theaters July 26, but the review embargo for the film broke on Tuesday, and the early reaction from critics has been largely positive.
The third Deadpool movie, and first to be included in the wider Marvel Cinematic Universe, stars Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman as the titular characters and is directed by Shawn Levy. The cast also includes The Crown‘s Emma Corrin as Cassandra Nova and Succession‘s Matthew Macfadyen as Tva (Time Variance Authority) agent Mr. Paradox.
As of Tuesday evening, the review aggregator sites had wildly divergent scores for Deadpool 3. On Rotten Tomatoes, the film’s score clocked in at 80 percent from 140 reviews, while over at Metacritic, the score was a more muted 54 percent from 45 reviews.

The reviews are in for “Deadpool & Wolverine,” and the snarky superhero isn’t wooing critics quite as positively as “Deadpool” and “Deadpool 2” did in 2016 and 2018.
“Deadpool & Wolverine” is the first R-rated Marvel Cinematic Universe movie and the only MCU theatrical release of 2024. The film is also the first time Deadpool will team up with Disney and Kevin Feige.
Industry inside jokes and self-deprecation run rampant in the film with some critics calling it “amusing and exhausting.” You will hopefully utter at least one chuckle throughout the 127 minute feature, though.
“When you throw 7,000 jokes at the screen hoping something will stick, a few of them certainly will,” Jordan Hoffman from Entertainment Weekly said. “I did laugh several times; I am not a monster.”
The film has a 79% Rotten Tomatoes score with 116 reviews, compared to the original film’s 85% and the sequel’s 84%.

“Beverly Hills Cop” and its young exuberant star Eddie Murphy were dominant forces on the cultural landscape as soon as the action comedy opened Dec. 5, 1984 on 1,532 screens, earning over $15 million in its first five days of release. “Beverly Hills Cop” garnered nearly $235 million domestically and another $81.6 million internationally.
The comedy even earned an Oscar nomination for its screenplay while Murphy hit superstar status thanks to his dazzling comedic turn as Axel Foley, a freewheeling Detroit cop who is the ultimate fish out of water when a murder investigation leads him to the by-the-book Beverly Hills police department. Despite receiving divisive reactions at the Cannes Film Festival, Lionsgate is ready to risk it for the biscuit with Francis Ford Coppola’s Megalopolis. Lionsgate is bringing Coppola’s science-fiction drama to theaters in the United States and Canada, says Adam Fogelson, chair of the Lionsgate Motion Picture Group. Disney has spent £3.5B ($4.5B) on production in the UK since 2019, Emea boss Jan Koeppen has revealed.
Koeppen, who has been in the role for five years, rolled out a wealth of stats that focused on Disney’s long connection with, and long-term commitment to, the UK, as he addressed the Deloitte and Enders Media and Telecoms 2024 and Beyond Conference in London.
Koeppen said tentpoles like Deadpool & Wolverine, one of 20 Disney films and series to have been produced at Pinewood over the past five years, allows the Mouse House to form deep connections with locals.
“Whenever I’m at Pinewood, what makes the biggest impression on me is the scale of the operation, the diversity of skills,” said Koeppen. “We’re talking about thousands of people, all part of the wider ecosystem. And on every single production, there are trainees getting experience to begin their careers in film and TV.

Before John Bradley was cast as the brash yet lovable Jack Rooney in David Benioff, Dan Weiss and Alexander Woo’s 3 Body Problem, the actor felt that he was limited in terms of the roles being offered to him after his turn as Samwell Tarly on Benioff and Weiss’ Game of Thrones.
“I think that they realized halfway through Game of Thrones that I was nothing like that character,” Bradley tells THR. “Dan Weiss said I was so diametrically opposed to the characters I was playing, and I think they could see that I was being put into that character bracket a little bit too easily, and they knew that I could do more than that. Jacques Audiard returned to Cannes on Saturday night to introduce the world to Emilia Perez, which received a rapturous response from the audience, who gave it a nine-minute standing ovation. After Audiard took the mic to speak in French, the standing ovation resumed for another minute or so.
The 10th film from the French auteur — his sixth film in the main competition — stars Zoe Saldaña as a frustrated lawyer, Selena Gomez as a drug lord’s wife, Édgar Ramírez as a dangerous love interest and Karla Sofía Gascón as the cartel kingpin who longs to escape a life of crime and become the woman he’s always dreamed of becoming. And surprise — it’s a musical.
As the credits roled, there were whoops and hollers and shouts of “Bravo,” even before the lights came up. Saldaña and Gascón were in tears, while Gomez was visibly moved, covering her face.

Just eight months after filmmaker Yorgos Lanthimos and star Emma Stone unveiled Poor Things at Venice, the duo are back on the festival circuit with Kinds of Kindness. The frequent collaborators faced the press at Cannes, where they tried to define the alchemy between their relationship, which netted Stone an Oscar for Poor Things and also includes The Favourite. Stone brushed off the suggestion that she was Lanthimos’ muse, responding, ““He’s my muse.”

“The Good Half,” a comedic drama starring Nick Jonas, has been acquired by Utopia and will be released in theaters this summer.
Utopia, which was co-founded by “The Good Half” director Robert Schwartzman, is partnering with Fathom Events for preview screenings on July 23 and July 25 in 900 theaters in North America. Those showtimes will feature a virtual Q&a with Jonas and Schwartzman, moderated by “Mad Men” actor Kiernan Shipka. “The Good Half” will likely get a traditional theatrical release later in the year.
“The Good Half” premiered last June at the Tribeca Festival, where it was seeking distribution. Though Schwartzman runs Utopia, representatives stress that he independently produced “The Good Half” before his own company acquired the film nearly a year later.
Jonas stars in the movie as Renn, a writer who travels home to Cleveland for his mother’s funeral. As he reunites with his family — Brittany Snow plays his high-strung sister,...

David Rooney: We’re nearing the middle of one of the most contentious election years in America’s history, with bitter divisions making a mockery of the increasingly obsolete appellation, “United States.” People are Anxious as they weigh a presidential vote destined to fuel the rage of one side or the other, potentially inciting violence.
That climate would seem to make this the ideal time for Alex Garland’s Civil War, which set a house record for A24 with its $25.7 million opening weekend and held strong at No. 1 in its second weekend. You can’t argue with those numbers. But what’s more interesting is the debate the film has ignited as to whether its fuzzy politics are a cop-out.
In probably the most rah-rah American movie of recent years, 2022’s Top Gun: Maverick, the foreign enemy with a uranium enrichment plant that needs bombing was identified with vague allusions at best,...

Chad Stahelski's 2019 actioner "John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum" featured a character named Rooney, a ballerina who was studying to be an assassin. Recall that seemingly 65% of the world's population are trained assassins in the world of John Wick, so a ballerina wanting to become an assassin is a viable career move. Rooney was played by a professional dancer named Unity Phelan, who has served as a principal dancer in the New York Ballet since 2021. The idea of a ballerina assassin was tantalizing, but Rooney's story was not followed in "Parabellum" or in the epically long "John Wick: Chapter 4."
One might also recall that John Wick seemingly died in "Chapter 4," leaving the franchise overlords in a lurch when it came to further sequels. Their solution was "John Wick Presents Ballerina," a film all about a ballerina's journey from the stage to the firing range. "Ballerina" will be directed by Len Wiseman,...
