When Lynnette Ramirez, president of Angela Bassett and Courtney B. Vance’s eponymous production company, logs onto Zoom to discuss the release of “Heist 88,” the company’s first feature, with Variety, her virtual background catches the eye. It’s a black-and-white photo of two children — a little boy and a little girl — alongside the Bassett Vance Productions logo.
It doesn’t take long to recognize that the striking shot is a family photo — and the two kids are the Hollywood power couple’s now-teenage twins Bronwyn and Slater Vance.
“This company is about legacy,” Ramirez says. “And not just their family’s legacy — but it certainly feels like that’s where the heart is.”
Indeed, Bassett Vance Productions is a family business, but it’s more than that. Formally founded in 2020 as one of the partnering companies with MTV Entertainment Group’s development program for Bipoc and women filmmakers,...

Bank robbers tend to be fairly easy to root for in movies. After all, it’s not the audience’s money getting pocketed onscreen. They typically don’t want to kill anybody, and their schemes tend to be pretty spectacular. “Heist 88,” a new Showtime release inspired by a real-life Chicago robbery from the year 1988, doesn’t trust viewers to be so accepting, so it spends most of its time underlining the generic reasons that its aggrieved crack team have for taking on the job. It’s a crime film that finds little joy in criminality, crammed with characters who’ve been backed into a corner, hindered by an overarching morality that doesn’t match the material.

The Courtney B. Vance-fronted Showtime original film “Heist 88” will debut next month on Paramount+, followed by a premiere on the linear pay cable channel. The story chronicles a master criminal who arranges an $80 million bank job prior to beginning a prison sentence. The film, produced by MTV Entertainment Studios, Bassett Vance Productions and Gunpowder & Sky, will debut on Paramount+ with Showtime beginning Sept. 29. It’ll make its linear debut on Showtime on Sunday, Oct. 1 at 9:00 p.m.
Written by Dwayne Johnson-Cochran and directed by Menhaj Huda, “Heist 88” is inspired by true events. The film features Vance as Jeremy Horne who can convince anyone to do anything. He recruits four bank employees to partake in a mega-bucks heist. Taking place before the advent of modern computerization and cybersecurity, it reunites Vance with Keesha Sharp. She portrayed Dale Cochran in “The People vs. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story.

A series of changes have taken place at Showtime. Variety has confirmed the network has canceled “Ziwe” after just two seasons and has picked up Mandy Patinkin’s “Seasoned” to series, delivering a six-episode order.
Hosted and executive produced by comedian Ziwe Fumudoh, the talk show focused on presenting trending hot topics concerning race, politics and other cultural issues as well as musical numbers, interviews, guest stars and comedic sketches. Guests on Season 2 included Drew Barrymore, Rowan Blanchard, Blake Griffin, Emily Ratajkowski and Mia Khalifa, among others. The series first debuted in 2021.
With the loss, that leaves Showtime without a current late night talk show following the cancellation of “Desus & Mero” (which Ziwe also served as a writer on before moving to her own show). The changes come as part of Showtime’s reevaluation of the programming slate after MTV Entertainment Group president and CEO Chris McCarthy stepped in...

Exclusive: Angela Bassett and Courtney B. Vance’s film Heist 88, which had been earmarked for Paramount+, will be moving to Showtime, Deadline has learned. Additionally, I hear the network has made decisions on two of its three comedy pilots, handing a six-episode series order to Seasoned, starring Mandy Patinkin and Kathryn Grody, and passing on The Wood, based on the 1999 feature film. Showtime also has opted not to renew Ziwe, hosted and executive produced by comedian Ziwe Fumudoh, for a third season.
Paramount Television Studios, which produces The Wood, will be shopping it elsewhere.
Original movies were a staple on Showtime in the 1980s, 90s and 2000s until the network shifted to original series. The network recently returned to the genre after a14-year break with Ray Donovan: The Movie. Cinematographer Brian Tufano, who shot British classics like "Trainspotting" and "Billy Elliot," has died at the age of 83. The news was announced by Jon Wardle, director of the UK's National Film and Television School, via his Twitter account, and confirmed by The Hollywood Reporter.
Tufano had been semi-retired for the past 10 years, but he had an illustrious career that spanned decades and left his imprint on cinema forever. He was awarded with a special BAFTA in 2001 for his contributions to television craft, honoring the work he did with directors like Ken Russell, Stephen Frears, and Alan Parker.
Despite doing so much great work on television, Tufano became best known worldwide for his collaborations with director Danny Boyle, shooting four films together including Boyle's breakout hit "Trainspotting." The talented director of photography was especially skilled at filming movement, with his camera acting almost like a distinct character all of its own.

Lifetime’s version of Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s fallout with the royal family, Harry & Meghan: Escaping the Palace, has a September premiere date and official trailer.

The movie will detail Meghan’s growing isolation and sadness, their disappointment that “The Firm” was not defending them against the press’s attacks and Harry’s fear that history would repeat itself and he would not be able to protect his wife and son from the same forces that may have contributed to his mother’s untimely death.

Lifetime is expanding its Harry & Meghan Creative Universe to air a third movie about the embattled royal couple.
In the wake of Oprah Winfrey’s blockbuster interview with the former Duke and Duchess of Sussex, Lifetime has greenlighted “Harry & Meghan: Escaping the Palace,” which promises to “reveal what ultimately lead to the couple’s break from the royal family.”
The new film is the follow-up to Lifetime’s 2018 entry “Harry & Meghan,” which chronicled the newlyweds’ love story, and 2019’s “Harry & Meghan: Becoming Royal,” which looked at their experiences inside the Royal Family during their first year of marriage.
Lifetime is now billing the three movies as their “Harry & Meghan” movie franchise trilogy. Casting is currently underway for the “Escaping the Palace,” and production will begin this spring, with an airdate eyed for fall.

As “Crisis on Infinite Earths” draws nearer, we’ve seen Barry Allen become more accepting of his fated death in the coming crossover. I mean, it’s not like he wants to die, but he’s willing to heroically sacrifice himself so that his loved ones – and everyone in existence, for that matter – may go on living.
Given that, we’re about to start seeing Barry readying Cisco Ramon as new Team Flash leader. It’s kind of odd to do so now that Cisco has given up his Vibe powers, but I guess he can run tech support well enough while Killer Frost and Elongated Man do their thing in the field.
Further hinting at Cisco coming to the forefront are these newly released photos from The Flash episode 6×05, “Kiss Kiss Breach Breach.” For those who are current on news pertaining to the series, they already know this to...

As much as I’ve loved The Flash, it’s been well-documented that I didn’t really care for season 4. Still, that broadcast year did produce at least a few bright spots, one of them being Danny Trejo’s Breacher. Long story short, he was the interdimensional bounty hunter father of Gypsy, and had a knack for being a pain in the neck to her boyfriend, Cisco Ramon.
Considering how Cisco and Gypsy are no longer an item and the former has a new lady in his life, that doesn’t necessarily mean there isn’t room for Breacher. With the coming Crisis looming, the Star Labs crew could certainly use a man of his talents.
Well, thanks to the official synopsis for episode 6×05, “Kiss Kiss Breach Breach,” we know exactly when Breacher will return:

The story of a British-Nigerian boy growing up in rural Lincolnshire and inner-city London is told with compassion in Shola Amoo’s profoundly moving drama
Writer-director Shola Amoo’s “semi-autobiographical” second feature is an affecting coming-of-age tale pitched somewhere between the sublime American poetry of Barry Jenkins’s Moonlight and the streetwise British grit of Noel Clarke and Menhaj Huda’s Kidulthood movies. A huge leap forward from the experimental collages of 2016’s A Moving Image, The Last Tree bristles with film-making confidence, plunging us into the world of its young protagonist as he struggles to find his place in a strangely changing environment. Powerful performances, tactile visuals and an elegantly fluid score add to the impact of this impressively understated yet profoundly moving tale.

As the cable portion of the Television Critics Assn. press tour continued, A&E looked ahead about a year to the next season of “Knightfall,” while Epix brought two big dramas set to premiere in the summer of 2019: “Pennyworth,” based on DC Comics characters, and the Ben Kingsley starrer “Perpetual Grace, Ltd.” Lifetime brought together the female directors of a number of their original movies for a rare peak behind the curtain, and National Geographic ended the day with a combination of factual programming such as the feature documentary “Science Fair” and Bear Grylls’ “Hostile Planet” and fiction, with the limited series adaptation of “The Hot Zone,” starring Julianna Margulies.

Lifetime has greenlighted a pair of original movies based on popular novels written nearly two centuries apart. The cable net said today that Pride and Prejudice: Atlanta, a contemporary take on Jane Austen’s early 19th century classic, and an adaptation of Adriana Trigiant’s 2009 book Very Valentine will premiere next year.
Pride and Prejudice: Atlanta features an African-American cast led by Reginald VelJohnson as Reverend Bennet, a pastor of a prominent Southern Baptist church, and his wife, Mrs. Bennet (Jackée Harry), author of a self-help book on how to find the perfect husband. Needless to say, Mrs. Bennet is less than thrilled that all five of their daughters — Lizzie (Tiffany Hines), Jane (Raney Branch), Mary (Brittney Level), Lydia (Reginae Carter) and Kitty (Alexia Bailey) — are still single. Relive the royal love story that captured the world’s attention when Harry & Meghan: A Royal Romancearrives on DVD October 16 from Lionsgate. A fairy tale come to life, this film follows the relationship — from blind date to romantic engagement — of England’s Prince Harry and American actress Meghan Markle. Directed by Menhaj Huda (TV’s “The Royals”) and starring Murray Fraser and Parisa Fitz-Henley, Harry & Meghan: A Royal Romance will be available on DVD for the suggested retail price of $9.98.
Harry & Meghan: A Royal Romance is undeniably a story of love conquering all. Prince Harry, consistently seen in the tabloids, is infamous for his bad-boy persona. Television star Meghan — ambitious, outspoken, and divorced, along with having a tumultuous relationship with her sister — doesn’t appear to be “princess material.” After their blind date, Harry and Meghan quickly realize they are kindred spirits. The story of how a prince fell in love with an actor is brought to life in a guilty pleasure – a cliche-packed TV movie that is as sweet as it is silly
On her first blind date with Prince Harry (Murray Fraser), Meghan Markle (Parisa Fitz-Henley) downs a dirty martini, forces the fifth – now sixth – heir to the British throne to grovel for being late, and admits her feel-good flick is Love Actually. His is The Lion King, and if you mix their favorites together with a stiff pour of violins and a tabloid swizzle-stick, the concoction would be Menhaj Huda’s highly quotable Lifetime movie Harry & Meghan: A Royal Romance, a brain-numbing charmer best consumed in a group, or guiltily alone.

The story behind the upcoming royal wedding sounds like the plot of a movie. In fact, it is sort of the plot of several movies out there already. Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s love story may mimic so many fairy tale fictions, but Lifetime is turning things around and making a movie out of this true story in “Harry & Meghan: A Royal Romance.” It’s no surprise they threw this film into production in advance of the May 19 nuptials. Back in 2011, the prolific TV movie network released a movie based on Prince William and Kate Middleton’s roller coaster relationship that led them to the altar at Westminster Abbey soon after its release. Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s relationship created a media frenzy practically overnight when the news of the relationship leaked in the fall of 2016. Lifetime is tapping into the ongoing worldwide interest with a ripped-from-the-headlines small...

Greenlit means a project is officially a go, so all you have to do is follow these leads to stay up to date. You never know where you’ll find an opportunity to land an audition! “Harry & Meghan: The Royal Love Story”Capitalizing on the interest in the royal romance, the cable network will be bringing the international love story to screens just in time for Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s wedding in May. It’s expected to cover the gamut of relative drama that has ensued since the relationship was publicized in the fall of 2016. Markle’s half-sister has been vocally criticizing the actor while Markle has been faced with racist backlash from people both within and outside the royal family and British politics. The network also aired a movie about Prince William and Kate Middleton’s wedding in 2011, so this comes as less than surprising. Menhaj Huda...

Gareth Evans, the action visionary behind The Raid, will create TV series Gangs Of London for HBO’s Cinemax and Sky Atlantic...
The cult cinema myth of Gareth Evans’s innovative 2011 Indonesian action flick The Raid is still resonating some six years after its release, evidenced by the Welsh helmer’s backlog, which, amongst other high-profile projects, consists of writing/directing The Raid 3 and writing an American remake of The Raid. However, it appears that Evans will also be heeding the peak television call, having been tapped to create an action series called Gangs Of London.
See related The Bridge: an unforgettable Scandinavian drama
Evans will move forward with creating the multi-part action drama for HBO’s Cinemax and Sky Atlantic, reports Deadline. The series will be a co-production of HBO/Sky with Pulse Films and Sister Pictures, marking the first TV drama produced by the latter.

From Doctor Who’s Mickey to a one-man film industry, and Brotherhood. So why doesn’t Noel Clarke get more respect?
Over the past weekend, the final part of Noel Clarke’s The Hood trilogy of movies, Brotherhood, hit big in the UK. The movie has earned £1.98m in its first seven days on release, on just 220 screens. It did so in spite of Clarke at one stage struggling to raise the finance for the film (only two companies ended up putting in tangible offers), and also in spite of it being eight years since the release of its predecessor, Adulthood.
In a summer of box office disappointments, Brotherhood has offered a very welcome contrast.
The box office numbers were being reported as a surprise, and not unreasonably. Rounding off a trilogy that’s been off screen for many years is a gamble, and a trilogy too...

Cheer on local talent with these potentially great UK films from 2016, including drama, comedy, action, horror, fantasy & more…
While Batman Vs Superman, Captain America: Civil War, X-Men Apocalypse and other mega franchises are expected to dominate cinemas in 2016, let’s hear it for the films below. None are sequels, few have titanic budgets, all of them are British and each of them has the potential to be great.
2016 looks to be a particularly strong year for UK crime drama, with Ben Wheatley’s Free Fire, Adam Smith’s Trespass Against Us and Michael Apted’s Unlocked on their way. Military thrillers are also well represented this year, with Gavin Hood’s Eye In The Sky, Fernando Coimbra’s Sand Castle, and Simon West’s Stratton incoming. There’s also comedy, fantasy, drama, horror and even a musical waiting for you below.

Stuck in a high-rise flat, six friends are hunted by a shadowy figure in Comedown. The performances and isolated location hold it strong, though, as characters begin to meet their grisly exit and the “monster” takes a prominent role, the cliché setups and forced twists render Comedown a bit of a letdown.
Lloyd (Jacob Anderson) has been in jail for the past three months. He is released and aims to change his gritty, crime ridden London lifestyle in order to take care of his pregnant girlfriend Jemma (Sophie Stuckey). Lloyd’s old crew, lead by the bullying Jason (Adam Deacon), forces him into participation for a job and wild night out in an abandoned multi-level apartment. Once the crew becomes situated in their old stomping grounds, drugs are distributed by Jason to the crew and an unwilling Lloyd. Quickly things turn bloody as a stalking figure begins to hunt everyone in the crew.

Out today on VOD is Comedown, one of the films that falls under the distribution partnership between The Orchard and ShockTillYouDrop.com. I liked this one. It had some good twists and reminded me of some '80s slasher fare. We have one more clip to share with you. You can watch it below and, because, it's part of a playlist, you can watch three more clips in case you missed them.
Directed by Menhaj Huda (Kidulthood), the film finds Jacob Anderson (Game of Thrones) playing one of six friends – all of whom have known each other from childhood.
