Passed away only five days after the death of his wife, on October 21, 1971. They had been married for 62 years.
Began his career in silent films; ironically in his last film, "In Cold Blood" (1967), he has no dialogue. He shares that distinction with Edward Everett Horton, who started in silents and had no dialogue in his last film, "Cold Turkey" (1970).
