Born in Atlanta, raised on Air Force bases. After graduation from the
San Francisco Art Institute, he apprenticed at John Korty's Mill Valley
studio as an animator of children's films, creating and directing live
action and animation for Sesame Street and The Electric Company.
Around this time, contracted by Jerry Garcia to create the 8 minute animated opening for The Grateful Dead Movie, a sequence acclaimed in reviews by every major newspaper in the US. This was the beginning of many collaborations with Garcia over the years, including the Touch of Grey video and a surreal title sequence for the CBS revival of The Twilight Zone television series, for which Garcia composed the score.
In 1977, formed Colossal Pictures, an animation, visual effects and live action production company in partnership with Drew Takahashi. The company soon outgrew its basement studio, and over the span of 20 years grew to comprise a hundred and eighty employees, an animation studio and live action/visual effects stages. Colossal became nationally recognized as a prime supplier of TV commercials, visual effects and broadcast IDs.
In the early days of Colossal, storyboarded racing and riding sequences for The Black Stallion, created its visual effects title sequence and award winning poster. Produced by Francis Ford Coppola, this was the first of many projects for American Zoetrope.
After The Black Stallion, he storyboarded The Right Stuff for presentation to Alan Ladd Jr., after which USFX was formed to produce over 450 shots for the movie. The critically praised visual effects work was followed by Visual Effects Supervision for Top Gun, The Running Man and Flight 93, among many others.
While at Colossal, directed tons of commercials and music videos. Left Colossal Pictures in 1996, accepting an invitation to base at American Zoetrope, occasionally contributing to projects there while working independently.
