When it comes to Spooky Season, places like Salem, Sleepy Hollow, New Orleans, and Savannah normally get the most attention as Halloween Towns, but the Big Apple has its own caramel-coating of creepiness.

PBS has acquired the domestic distribution rights to “Icon: Music Through the Lens,” a docuseries about the history of photography for rock stars and musicians through the years.
Dick Carruthers, a legendary music director who has worked with artists like The Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, Beyonce, White Stripes, Oasis, Paul McCartney and Black Sabbath, directed and produced “Icon,” and music photographer Gered Mankowitz curated the series’ many iconic photos.
PBS plans to air the series this summer, which is in six, one-hour parts, as part of the network’s primetime lineup.
“Icon” charts the fascinating lives and often crazy experiences of music photogs, from the earliest darkrooms to the digital landscapes of the present day. The series examines famous studio portraits, record sleeves, music magazine shoots, live shows, exhibitions, social media, coffee table books and fine art to ask what makes an image iconic and discover what the future holds for music photography.

When the Ramones first performed “Blitzkrieg Bop” at Cbgb some 44 years ago, no one could have imagined the song would be heard in virtually every stadium and in multiple TV spots for mainstream products like Coppertone, GoPro, Peloton, At&T and Taco Bell.
And punk rock, the genre of music that the Ramones and so many others ushered in, seemed destined for an equally short shelf life. Yet despite its built-to-self-destruct ethos, punk rock has not only endured, it continues to attract fans both old and young — anyone who’s read this far has probably already heard about the dust-up between Sex Pistols frontman John Lydon (aka Rotten) and former Ramones drummer Marc Bell at an onstage Q&A last week to promote the film, which is at turns hilarious, pathetic and ridiculous, and often all three at once.
Two current documentaries illustrate the genre’s remarkable durability and continued relevance:...

With Sundance 2012 Film Festival over, the next big one on the horizon is South by Southwest, which we’ll be heavily covering. The biggest chunk of the line-up has been announced today, which has some great premieres including 21 Jump Street, Tiff and Sundance hit The Raid, Will Ferrell‘s Casa de mi Padre, the documentary Girl Model (which we liked at Tiff), as well as the next from Broken Lizard, The Babymakers. There are many other promising titles included and you can see them all below. Check back for our coverage for the fest, kicking off March 9th.

Attendees of South by Southwest 2012 are in for a treat. 130 feature films will screen at the Austin, Texas festival taking place March 9-17. Among them are 65 World Premieres, 17 North American Premieres and 10 U.S. Premieres. The organization already announced [1] Drew Goddard and Joss Whedon's The Cabin in the Woods would open the festival (the movie is phenomenal [2]) and today the majority of the remaining line up has been revealed. One of the highlights is the unbelievably smart and hilarious 21 Jump Street, directed by Phil Lord & Christopher Miller. Both of those are World Premieres. Other highlights include The Hunter, Killer Joe, The Babymakers, frankie goes boom, God Bless America, The Imposter, The Raid, Bernie and Casa de mi Padre just to name a few. After the jump, read descriptions of all the films that have been announced so far. Before I copy and paste the rest of the list, a few minor notes.

The Rules Of The Game (Criterion) Jean Renoir’s classic from 1939 was met with a riot at its premiere and was severely cut by its distributor, available only in truncated form for two decades until it was restored to the grandeur for which it is celebrated today. A biting comedy of manners set in the upstairs and downstairs of a French country estate, the film bitterly vivisects the bourgeoisie with a gentle ferocity that will tickle the laughter in your throat. Renoir co-stars as Octave. Also available on Blu-ray disc. Bonuses: Introduction to the film by Renoir; Commentary written by scholar Alexander Sesonske and read by Peter Bogdanovich; Comparison of the film’s two endings; Selected scene analysis by Renoir scholar Chris Faulkner; Featurettes and vintage film clips; Part one of David Thomson’s “Jean Renoir” BBC documentary; Video essay; Interviews with Renoir, crew members,...

Bob Gruen John Lennon at a coffee counter in Yonkers, NY. March 1975.
Today, rock photographer Bob Gruen possesses a deep and valuable catalog of the iconic images he captured, from John Lennon posing in a “New York City” T-shirt to the Ramones schlepping their guitars on the subway. But back in the 1970s, when Gruen was hustling from one freelance assignment to the next, one of his most important assets was an old car.
“A ’54 Buick Special that I got for $300,” he recalls.

Bob Gruen, the famed rock photographer known for his iconic shot of John Lennon in a sleeveless "New York City" t-shirt, is enjoying the release of a new 288-page book of his work, plus the opening of a photo exhibit tonight, Dec. 1, at Los Angeles' Fahey/Klein Gallery. "The book is my first hard-cover collection of all my work. I've done about a dozen other books but they’ve all been about a certain group: several of John Lennon, The Clash, Sex Pistols. I've never really seen this many photos of mine in one place," says the

All the leaves are nearly brown, skies sometimes gray, there's a slight chill in the air, and my ears and eyes have been quite busy. A touch of melancholia and a satchel full of dreams yet to be realized. Winter is just around the corner. A hint of summer still lingers in the late afternoon sun. Walks in the park with the dog, shared playlists on Spotify providing the soundtrack. I remain an ever faithful servant to smart culture's demands.

Fittingly, the “rock stars” in attendance at the Cutting Room in Manhattan were actually many noted rock’n'roll photographers, including the likes of Henry Diltz (who shot the cover for the first Crosby Stills and Nash album), Ken Regan (Bob Dylan’s favorite photographer for...

The iconic and infamous cover the walls at the Brooklyn Museum's fine exhibition (on view till January 31, 2010), "Who Shot Rock & Roll." Yes you will see many old favorites, like John Lennon wearing a New York City sleeveless tee in Bob Gruen's contact sheet from the familiar 1974 shoot. You will see him again in Richard Avedon's 1967 formal portraits of the Beatles, their mop hair newly coiffed. And again in Allan Tannenbaum's shot of John and Yoko in bed, NYC, 1980 just two weeks before he died. The text explains that Lennon liked Tannenbaum's work: "You really capture Yoko's beauty." And that sums up the essence of this show's raison d'etre as curated by Gail Buckland who also edited the excellent catalogue, to focus on the photographers, how the subject inspired them and the photographic arts. What...

Vf Daily’s picks for the top three parties around the globe last night. Rock Generation. Liam McMullan at the Maritime Hotel’s Hiro Ballroom, on June 24, 2009. From PatrickMcMullan.com. Who: The legendary serial rock climber Bebe Buell (who inspired Kate Hudson’s Penny Lane character in the movie Almost Famous), Buell’s daughter Liv Tyler (Liv’s dad, Steven Tyler, was not in attendance), social scene-ster Liam McMullan (Patrick’s kid) on the guitar, Liam’s wife-to-be, Aesha Waks, on the mic, rock ’n’ roll photographers Bob Gruen, Mick Rock, and a lot of flashbulbs. Where: The Maritime Hotel’s Hiro Ballroom, New York City. Why: Because the legendary Buell was celebrating her single “Air Kisses for the Masses,” which will appear on a forthcoming record this fall. Talking Point: Liam’s likeness to Robert Pattinson. Does anyone agree?...

After a long day spent trying to knock some sense into those sentences, I rode the R train down to the Not Fade Away Gallery for the publication party of Allen Tannenbaum's photo extravanganza "New York in the 70s," a bash that featured a sexy DJ, the "sexy DJ" being an enviable niche to fill in any decade. No sooner do I thread through the initial throng than whom should I run into but Danny Fields, a much-decorated veteran of Cbgb's but so much more. Former loftmate of Edie Sedgwick and co-manager of The Ramones, among his many other feats and exploits, Danny is one of those legends so legendary that other legends consider him a legend. Recognizing me despite the distancing years, Danny said, "Let's hug like the high school kids on the front page of The New York Times." And so we did, even though neither one of...

To homophobic men, they appeared outrageously gender-challenged in makeup and spandex, but to those groupies who knew them, they were true macho dudes from the rock fringe culture of New Yawk. Sex and drugs and roll 'n' roll. More Rolling Stones raunch and primal then the calculated and effeminate glam of David Bowie or Jobriath.
