Had a surprise number one hit record in the UK in 1975 with "Whispering Grass", a duet with his It Ain't Half Hot Mum (1974) co-star Windsor Davies.

He returned to the UK from New Zealand to have a liver transplant, but was too ill for surgery.

He had 2 children, Sheila and Philip. Sheila died in 2016 at the age of 58. She is buried alongside her father.
