The desire to blend reality and fiction in film predates the Found Footage genre by literal decades, with classics like The Legend of Boggy Creek and even the original Texas Chain Saw Massacre dipping their toes into documentary-inspired filmmaking long before in-universe-cameras became popular.
Of course, it was only after The Blair Witch Project that creators would realize both the creative and financial potential of making movies like this – and when it comes to lucrative Pov thrills, very few could compete with Oren Peli and his DIY Paranormal Activity franchise. For over a decade, these films dominated the box-office with formulaic yet consistently entertaining scares made on a budget, with their success allowing the programmer-turned-filmmaker to invest in other spooky projects. And while I’ve already covered Peli’s over-hated Area 51 on a previous edition of The Silver Lining, today we’ll be discussing one of his most unique...

From Jay Lender and Micah Wright, They’re Watching is a horror comedy that follows the team from a reality TV show called “Home Hunters Global,” who have some very freaky encounters with a witch while exploring a small Eastern European town. Hello again found footage, my old friend. I kid of course. We were never friends. They’re Watching is the latest attempt at delivering found footage (Ff hereafter) thrills, and while it makes some progress it unsurprisingly stalls where so many Ff films have failed before. Home Hunters Global is a globe-hopping reality show about people finding new homes in international locales — think House Hunters International on a budget — and their latest episode introduces viewers to Becky (Brigid Brannagh), an American artist hoping to settle in the Eastern European nation of Moldova. She’s found her new home in the small town of Pavlovka where the locals are twitchy and the Starbucks are non-existent, but when the show’s crew returns a few months later to follow-up on her progress they find more than renovations waiting for them. The crew — cameraman Greg (David Alpay), sound guy Alex (Kris Lemche), new hire Sarah (Mia Faith), and producer Kate...

What do you get when you combine uninventive found footage, a location chosen specifically for its cheap production costs, and CGI the likes of which has not been seen since the mid-1990s? Such a recipe could only result in They’re Watching, a horror comedy whose filmmakers appear to have no basic knowledge of how either genre works.
In all fairness, the film does bait its hook with an auspicious premise. Set in the former Soviet republic of Moldova (it was actually shot throughout Romania), it captures the crew of a House Hunters International-type reality show as they return to a remote village to follow up on a money pit acquired by a wealthy American artist (Brigid Brannagh) and her Eastern European footballer husband (Cristian Balint). As expected, a classic rural vs. urban conflict begins when the outsiders crash and secretly film a sacred funeral, causing the deeply superstitious populace to become hostile.

*Read In Russian-y Accent* “Only found-footage horror comedy in Moldova iz Best found-footage horror comedy in Moldova” – right? Sorry Dorothina, you’re not in Pavloka anymore. There’s a big cinematic world out there filled with found-footage hopefuls and, unfortunately, They’re Watching is pretty middling by comparison.

Chicago – There’s something very wrong with Bradley Parker’s “Chernobyl Dairies,” and the problem is right there in its title. The very notion of setting a knee-jerk horror film at the site of the 1986 Chernobyl disaster is so offensive that it’s bound to halt many moviegoers from judging the picture on its own terms. It’s the cinematic equivalent of an obscenely tasteless haunted house.
After directing the best found footage thriller since 1999’s “Blair Witch Project,” producer Oren Peli has floundered in the years following his spectacular success with 2007’s “Paranormal Activity.” It’s hard to see what Peli found appealing about the derivative subject matter in “Chernobyl Diaries,” causing him to serve as both a co-producer and co-writer. The film is no different from the vast majority of generic horror trash available on FearNet, where Parker’s picture is undoubtedly destined to become available.
Blu-ray Rating:...

Not exactly covering any new ground and reeking of other films, Chernobyl Diaries is a film about a creepy Russian city near the infamous meltdown. It is not exactly irradiating and certainly no surprises. Chris (Jesse McCartney), his girlfriend Natalie (Olivia Taylor Dudley), and their mutual friend Amanda (Devin Kelley), are traveling across Europe. They stop in Kiev to visit Chris's brother, Paul (Jonathan Sadowski), before heading on to Moscow. Paul suggests that they go on an extreme tour with Uri (Dimitri Diatchenko) and his other customers Zoe (Ingrid Bolso Berdal) and Australian Michael (Nathan Phillips) to the abandoned village of Prypiat, a town near the Chernobyl nuclear power plant meltdown that was evacuated overnight. They discover...

Stars: Jesse McCartney, Jonathan Sadowski, Olivia Dudley, Ingrid Bolsø Berdal, Dimitri Diatchenko, Devin Kelley | Written by Oren Peli, Carey Van Dyke, Shane Van Dyke | Directed by Bradley Parker
Being a big fan of Paranormal Activity and having an interest in nuclear disasters, I was rather looking forward to Chernobyl Diaries, which is written and produced by Oren Peli, the man behind the horror franchise (for the record, I have yet to subject myself to the far less warmly received sequels). Chernobyl Diaries follows a group of twenty-somethings who, in the name of ‘extreme tourism’, sign up for a guided tour of Prypiat, the city which was home to the workers of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant and their families, which was abandoned in 1986 after the disaster. Unluckily, the group’s tour bus is damaged, leaving them stuck in the deserted city whereupon they are attacked by unknown entities.

Horror movie Chernobyl Diaries has only one thing going for it: It’s written by Oren Peli, the creator of the theatrical sensation series Paranormal Activity. That gets it through Disc Dish‘s requirement that a movie is “notable” to be included here. But other than the Peli connection, this film has little to write home about.
(I was one of the few who saw it in theaters, and trust me, it’s not worth the time investment unless you really love cheesy horror flicks and are desperate for some entertainment.)
Peli’s script has a decent premise; a vacation tour around a nuclear burned out town sounds plenty spooky. But that’s the film’s main talking point.
The cast is made up of relative unknowns. The tourists are played by Ingrid Bolso Berdal, Olivia Dudley, Devin Kelley...

The found footage sub-genre of horror films has been well and truly done to death, and so the question begins – what will be the next trick up filmmakers’ sleeves? Though produced by Paranormal Activity director Oren Peli, Chernobyl Diaries in fact dispenses with the gimmicky necessities of found footage, even if it peculiarly retains the same handheld aesthetic throughout. Thus, confusing it is early on when one character tells another to put their camera away, and of course, our shot doesn’t budge an inch. However, that’s really the least of the complaints in a film that so expertly squanders its solid premise and eerie locale.
When tourists Chris (Jesse McCartney), his girlfriend Natalie (Olivia Taylor Dudley), and their friend Amanda (Devin Kelley) stop off to visit Chris’s brother, Paul (Jonathan Sadowski), he convinces them to go on an “extreme tour” of Prypiat, the...

Director: Bradley Parker. Writers: Oren Peli, Carey Van Dyke, and Shane Van Dyke. Cast: Ingrid Bolsø Berdal, Dimitri Diatchenko, Olivia Dudley, Devin Kelley, Jesse McCartney, and Nathan Phillips. Tagline: "Experience the fallout." Common sense would say: "stay away from irradiated landscapes." But for Zoe (Ingrid Bolsø Berdal), Michael (Nathan Phillips), Natalie (Olivia Dudley), Amanda (Devin Kelley), Chris (Jesse McCartney) and Paul (Jonathan Sadowski), this is an adventure! Or perhaps, this is a tragedy as the town of Pripyat, Ukraine now hosts an assortment of human oddities. They only show their hideous faces at night and the Chernobyl Diaries slowly begins to create scares. Then, the horrors on screen along with the isolated location create for true terror! The story begins simply enough with Chris visiting his brother, Paul, in Kiev. Yet, Paul is an adrenalin junkie and he wants to set out on "an extreme adventure." Their destination is Pripyat which borders the.

Lately, it's hard to walk into the horror section of your local movie store and spit without hitting a found-footage film; they were slowly increasing in number after The Blair Witch Project and hit epidemic proportions in the wake of the Paranormal Activity franchise. While some of them are decent (Cloverfield, Rec), others are abysmal attempts to hide a low budget with "edgy" Pov shots and cheap jump scares.
That said, I am a fan of the first Paranormal Activity film, and when I saw that its director was coming out with a new feature, Chernobyl Diaries, I was on board. New Chernobyl Diaries movie delivered lots of thrills, suspense & wicked storyline. Warner Bros. Pictures released their new, crazy thriller flick "Chernobyl Diaries" into theaters this weekend. I just checked it out,and I thought it really served up a ton thrills, action, suspense, and more. The storyline turned out to be quite sad and wicked. I mean, you could just tell these kids making a horrible mistake right from the start ,and it seemed so innocent at first. It stars: Devin Kelley, Jonathan Sadowski, Ingrid Bolsø Berdal, Olivia Taylor Dudley, Jesse McCartney, Nathan Philips, and Dimitri Diatchenko. In the new flick, a group of six young tourists come up with a zany idea to take a little tour into the city of Pripyat, which is the former home of the workers of the Chernobyl nuclear reactor, but it was thought to have been deserted for 25 years. They hire an extreme...

Bumps in the night, innovative concepts, fun scares and perhaps more importantly than anything, situations that feel real are all elements that are now expected from a Peli film and while each and every one is present and accounted for in Chernobyl Diaries, they’re all achieved on a subpar level. A well-made horror film can be one of the most enjoyable cinematic experiences a film buff can experience. If the film manages to hook you in the first act, drawing you into its web of a story, it can then ratchet up the tension, keeping you on the edge of your seat until a thrilling climax. Even lesser horror movies, which, let’s face it, is the category most studio horror films fall into these days, can pull off some of those tricks and treats. While “scary” probably isn’t the right word for it anymore, audiences still have a desire to feel something similar in the theater – a desire to be unsettled perhaps. Unfortunately, Bradley Parker‘s Chernobyl Diaries fails at all of this. The plot of the film isn’t so much a plot as it as a horror movie formula. A group of six guys and gals in their twenties (Ingrid Bolsø Berdal, Jesse McCartney...

No matter how much money you put into something, once in a while, you have to cut your losses and move on. That would’ve been sound advice for the characters in Chernobyl Diaries, where six vacationers buy an “extreme tour” for a day in Pripyat, the once proud city that used to house the families that worked at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant before the meltdown forced them to suddenly evacuate 25 years ago.
You’ve seen these tours and perhaps have been on them before; “Reputable” eco tours that are far less extreme than what the brochure says, but hey, global trekkers are up for anything as long as they’re away from home. There is no zip lining, kayaking or white water rafting in this trip. The fascination of this journey is to walk around a ghost town, take pictures and make sure you leave the city without...

Review in A Hurry: Paranormal Activity creator Oren Peli puts down the shaky cam and heads to the Ukraine. A group of young, attractive, and seriously naive "extreme tourists" pay a local to visit the abandoned streets of nuclear Chernobyl. The setting is genuinely creepy, but the last act emits low-level thrills. The Bigger Picture: Seven people—six young and attractive tourists (Jesse McCartney, Olivia Dudley, Devin Kelley, Nathan Phillips, Jonathan Sadowski and Ingrid Bolsø Berdal) and their guide (Dimitri Diatchenko)—set out to explore the still radioactive wasteland of Pripyat, the district where the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant workers lived. The visitors' first warning that something's a...

Chicago – Bradley Parker’s “Chernobyl Diaries” has just enough personality, confident technical elements, and outright weirdness to make it a trip worth taking for horror fans. The fact that the parts of the production that undeniably work couldn’t be wrangled into something that’s more competent overall is disappointing but there’s more to like here than one would expect. It’s a bit of a wasted opportunity but it will find a loyal audience who finds it original enough that they just don’t care.
Rating: 3.0/5.0
With elements of “Hostel,” “The Hills Have Eyes,” and “Night of the Living Dead,” “Chernobyl Diaries” certainly gets points for wacked-out originality. It’s not every Friday that you see a horror movie that includes a bear attack, rabid wolves, a mutated fish, and something that looks like the creature from “Basket Case” crawling across a floor. “Chernobyl Diaries” is a Weird...
