Class episode 4 review: Co-Owner Of A Lonely Heart
Louisa Mellor Nov 5, 2016

Class delivers a dramatic mid-series episode with the feel of a finale in Co-Owner Of A Lonely Heart…

This review contains spoilers.

1.4 Co-Owner Of A Lonely Heart

Who else feels as though we’ve just skipped twenty episodes to get straight to the two-part season finale? By my count, before the winsome young couple have it off and leap through a portal into a shadow dimension, there should have been at least one misguided comedy romp, a crossover ep, a guest star vehicle of dubious merit and a handful of filler episodes.

You can’t just fast-forward to the good stuff. Can you?

Class can. Its UK-size run of eight episodes pretty much demands that it does. Even if the...

Margot Robbie Set to Play Tonya Harding in I, Tonya
Margot Robbie (Suicide Squad) has taken on the role of disgraced Olympic figure skater Tanya Harding in an upcoming movie called I, Tonya. This is definitely one of the strangest roles that Robbie has taken on yet.

You may or may not remember Harding, but she rose to the top of figure skating glory from a poor and rough childhood. She was the first woman to complete the triple axel in major competitions, and it led her to winning the 1991 U.S. Figure Skating Championships and coming in second in the World Championships.

In 1994, she was set to compete in the Olympic Games in Lillehammer against Nancy Kerrigan. That's when her life took a weird turn. Hardy's husband and a couple of other thugs were hired to attack Kerrigan and break her leg. Luckily for her, they sucked at their job and only bruised her leg, then they got caught,...

31 Days of Horror: 100 Greatest Horror Films: Top 75
Every year, we here at Sound On Sight celebrate the month of October with 31 Days of Horror; and every year, I update the list of my favourite horror films ever made. Last year, I released a list that included 150 picks. This year, I’ll be upgrading the list, making minor alterations, changing the rankings, adding new entries, and possibly removing a few titles. I’ve also decided to publish each post backwards this time for one reason: the new additions appear lower on my list, whereas my top 50 haven’t changed much, except for maybe in ranking. I am including documentaries, short films and mini series, only as special mentions – along with a few features that can qualify as horror, but barely do.

****

Special Mention:

Häxan

Directed by Benjamin Christensen

Denmark / Sweden, 1922

Häxan (a.k.a The Witches or Witchcraft Through The Ages) is a 1922 silent documentary about the history of witchcraft,...

Student of the Year Movie Review
When I entered the cinema hall to sit down and watch Karan Johar’s latest directorial venture Student of the Year, I was completely taken aback by the fact that the room was almost full! This is especially since the film has three new and unheard of actor, Siddharth Malhotra, Varun Dhawan and Alia Bhatt playing the leading roles. It led me to assume that it was most likely that everyone was here to witness what one of Bollywood’s most premier filmmakers has now constructed for us following the successful My Name is Khan (2010). It also reaffirmed for me that the audiences’ approach to Indian cinema had now transformed. They are now interested in the people behind the camera in addition to the people who are in front of it. Student of the Year does entertain you during its two and a half hour run, but there are certain...

Mark Wahlberg and Seth MacFarlane in Ted (2012)
Exclusive: Laura Vandervoort Talks Ted and This Means War
Mark Wahlberg and Seth MacFarlane in Ted (2012)
I recently had the chance to speak with actress Laura Vandervoort, who was promoting her new thriller The Entitled, which was just released on Blu-ray and DVD. We also discussed upcoming projects such as Ted, where she stars alongside Mark Wahlberg and Mila Kunis. The story centers on Mark Wahlberg's character and his unusual relationship with his childhood teddy bear, who came to life after a childhood wish. Here's what she had to say about working with the cast.

"Ted was a lot of fun for me. We just wrapped that in Boston about a month ago. It has Mark Wahlberg and Mila Kunis as the two leads, and I played Tanya. I work at the car rental shop that Mark Wahlberg works at. I call it a guys movie. Seth MacFarlane directed it and its his kind of humor, that Family Guy type of humor. I was honored...

DVD Review: Kat Dennings Shines in Flawed ‘Daydream Nation’
Chicago – Michael Goldbach’s little-seen quirk-fest is a feature filmmaking debut like many others. It feels less like a final draft than an overcrowded sketchpad. There seems to be no end to the amount of intriguing ideas that Goldbach wishes to tackle, but he has little idea of how to string them together. His various stylistic conceits distract from the narrative rather than enhance it, resulting in an ungainly picture.

Luckily, “Daydream Nation” is blessed with two young leads so appealing and authentic that they make viewers forget the film’s sizable flaws for long passages of its running time. Kat Dennings has spent the last few years being tossed from one so-so vehicle to another, but she always emerges unscathed, thanks to her self-deprecating charm and unshakable charisma. She deserves to be a star in the same league as Emma Stone, as does her co-star Reece Thompson, still best...

Devil Review
While it’s not much of a rave, as supernatural elevator films go, Devil, from Quarantine director John Erick Dowdle, likely hangs near the top floor. Not that it has a lot of competition – Dick Mass’s possessed elevator on the rampage tale from the Netherlands, De Lift, and its 2001 American remake The Shaft are the only other titles that leap to mind. Perhaps wisely, in this case, the elevator itself isn’t the real source of menace.

This film’s plot, borrowing from classic thrillers like Hitchcock’s Lifeboat, couldn’t be simpler – a widowed detective (Chris Messina) investigating an apparent suicide is led to a high-rise office tower. There, he attempts to unravel the mystery behind a group of five seemingly random strangers (played by Logan Marshall-Green, Jenny O’Hara, Bojana Novakovic, Bokeem Woodbine and entertaining comic relief Geoffrey Arend), trapped in an unmovable elevator. As the title suggests,...

Devilish New Images from Shyamalan’s Devil
Still thinking of making a run for that elevator? Think again. The studio have released new images from “Devil”, the “trapped-in-an-elevator-with-the-devil” movie from, according to the ads, “the mind of M. Night Shyamalan”. The script is by Brian Nelson and siblings John Erick Dowdle and Drew Dowdle handle directing duties, but Shyamalan apparently came up with the story, which is good enough to give him top billing. A group of disparate strangers trapped in an office elevator suddenly realize that the devil is among them. Meanwhile, a Detective (Chris Messina) works to help them from the outside. From writer/producer M. Night Shyamalan. Starring Chris Messina, Geoffrey Arend, Logan Marshall-Green, Bojana Novakovic, Jenny O’Hara, Bokeem Woodbine, Jacob Vargas and directed by Drew Dowdle and John Erick Dowdle. Stay out of the elevator September 17, 2010. Four of the new images here. Get the rest in our “Devil” preview page.

'Gossip Girl' recap: Rufus and Lily tie the knot...and gain a son
Besf. Best. Episode. So. Far. Don’t you agree PopWatchers? This season has been a little spotty but last night’s Gossip Girl felt like old times. There was Blair bitchiness (my fave line of the evening: “Trust me Nate: I know women…and none of us are that nice.”). There was fabulous fashion (J’adored Serena’s dress at the wedding). And there was Dorota (her own wedding ensemble was genius—the woman should wear more large hats). So it was definitely still the most entertaining Gg this season…but, obvs, I still have some issues. My favorite scene...

Blu-Ray Review: ‘Marley & Me’ Effective Crowd Pleaser, Great Blu-Ray
Blu-Ray Rating: 4.0/5.0 Chicago – “Marley & Me” is that rare, old-fashioned crowd pleaser that honestly pleases. The movie just works. Yes, it’s sentimental, melodramatic, and a bit long, but it’s completely effective and was underrated in theaters. This is going to be a movie that fans love for years to come and Fox has given their family-friendly hit a gorgeous three-disc Blu-Ray treatment.

“Marley & Me” opened with the highest Christmas day gross of all time and stayed at number one into 2009. It’s very easy to see why. This underrated dramedy directed by David Frankel (“The Devil Wears Prada”) and written by the excellent Scott Frank (“The Lookout”) and Don Roos (“The Opposite of Sex”) is moving without being manipulative and the kind of heartwarming story of average people that you don’t see that often in the era of sequels and superheroes.

Marley and Me was released on Blu-Ray on March 31st,...

The Death Of Batman? Seriously?
If you can believe it, there is currently an in-progress comic book story arc involving Batman which will end in the death of… Bruce Wayne.

Written by Grant Morrison and penciled by Tony Daniel and Alex Ross, the series is a cheap response to Marvel’s recent killing off of Captain America.

According to Grant Morrison, “the end of Bruce Wayne as Batman” is “a fate worse than death, things that no one would expect to happen to these guys at all.” It is rumored that Batman will emphatically die tomorrow, November 26, at comic book news stands everywhere.

Unknown though, is who is behind the character’s demise. Some say it will be at the hands of Robin (Tim Drake) when he makes a play for the dark side. Others insist it will be at the hands of the mysteriously unknown villain “The Black Glove.” Still others speculate that Wayne...
