Peaky Blinders caught the imagination by swerving the unexpected. Creator Steven Knight put the whole thing on a tilt from the start by not setting his gangster drama in London, but in (then) unfashionable Birmingham. He made family leader Tommy Shelby not the eldest but the middle brother. He mad Helen McCrory’s indelible Polly Gray not Tommy’s mother but his aunt. His working class characters weren’t to be pitied, but feared and respected… Nothing, from the contemporary rock music to the interweaving of Romany culture, was quite what period audiences had come to expect.
Knight’s slanted take on historical drama was exemplified at the climax of the Peaky Blinders series one finale, directed by Tom Harper. Now, over a decade later, Harper is coming back to direct the long-discussed Peaky Blinders movie, which starts filming in September 2024 in the West Midlands, after being officially commissioned by...

It is certainly not the case that every lackluster show title reflects a lackluster show. For every tepid Suspicion there’s a zippy Hijack, for every drab Liaison a gorgeous Foundation — and that’s just on Apple TV+. But an uninspired name can feel, in retrospect, like an early warning sign.
So it is with the streamer’s Criminal Record, not to be confused with Criminal Minds or Criminal: UK or Law & Order: Criminal Intent. The thriller has its merits, chief among them Cush Jumbo and Peter Capaldi as a pair of rival cops. But a tendency to prioritize themes over characters, combined with languid pacing and a too-measured tone, ultimately results in too little payoff for the time it demands.
For a while, the basic promise of a twisty murder mystery with prestige-tv gloss is enough to sustain some interest. Jumbo plays June Lenker, a midlevel detective...

When Peter Capaldi flickers into view on the Zoom call, I half expect him to tell me to “F** Off!”
For TV viewers of a certain age, the 65-year-old Scottish actor will forever be Malcolm Tucker, the supremely sweary spin doctor in Armando Iannucci’s pre-Veep Brit political satire The Thick of It.
“It’s The Thick of It and Doctor Who,” says a charming (and clean-mouthed) Capaldi, about the roles he’s most recognized for (he played the twelfth incarnation of the Doctor in the cult sci-fi series from 2013 to 2017). “Surprisingly, The Thick of It is still incredibly popular [the series wrapped in 2012]. People, generally very cool, smart young people, recognize me from that a lot. They generally just ask me to swear at them.”
Of course, there’s a lot more to Capaldi than Tucker and the Doctor. His scores of film and TV appearances include playing alongside Burt Lancaster in Bill Forsyth’s 1983 classic Local Hero,...

From BAFTA Award nominee Paul Rutman, Criminal Record is described as a powerful, character-driven thriller set in the heart of contemporary London. An anonymous phone call draws two brilliant detectives (Capaldi & Jumbo) into a confrontation over an old murder case: one a young woman in the early stages of her career and the other a well-connected man determined to protect his legacy. Since hanging up his Tardis key following his run in Doctor Who, Peter Capaldi's biggest telly role has been in the darkly hewed The Devil's Hour. For new Apple TV+ series Criminal Record, he's digging into darkness again, this time on the lawman side of things.
Criminal Record, created by Paul Rutman, is set in the heart of contemporary London. An anonymous phone call draws two brilliant detectives into a confrontation over an old murder case — one a young woman in the early stages of her career, the other a well-connected man determined to protect his legacy. The series touched on the issues of race, institutional failure, and the quest to find common ground in a polarised Britain. Capaldi stars as Detective Chief Inspector Daniel Hegarty, alongside Cush Jumbo as Detective Sergeant June Lenker.

It’s unsurprising the actor has yet to direct another film after giving so much to this blistering debut, acted at full tilt by a remarkable cast
Twenty-five years ago, Gary Oldman opened an artery of anguish with his brilliant, wrenchingly emotional debut as writer-director inspired by his own father and his childhood in south London, positioned between Terence Davies and Martin Scorsese. The title conveys with horrible force both violence and the cost of violence. “Nil by mouth” is what you see over an intravenously fed patient’s hospital bed – and yet the phrase is also a metaphor for the dad’s dysfunction, the walled-off emotional aridity; nil by mouth, no kissing, no talking, nothing.
It is an urban pastoral and social-realist tragedy. Watched again now, you can appreciate how formally accomplished it is, how emotionally extravagant, and acted at full tilt by a remarkable cast. Ray Winstone is Ray,...

Hanna is back, and action fans worldwide rejoice.
Fugitive Hanna captured viewers' attention during the first season of the Amazon Prime Video series, as she was a combination of power and pathos.
This season, Hanna, played by Esme Creed-Miles, is going to be forced to evolve. Her surrogate father, Erik, who rescued her as a baby from the sinister Utrax program, was killed late last season.
Hanna attempted to break out other girls such as her from Utrax, but only Clara would come with her.
Surprisingly assisting Hanna's escape was Marissa, who for years ran Utrax before developing a conscience.
David Farr, the show's creator, explained what's ahead for Hanna.
“The central dilemma of Season 2 is should Hanna stay with this family of young women and join them, become one of the young assassins in the Utrax program, or should she rebel, stand against that program and be alone,” Farr said.

Ben Chessell.
Director Ben Chessell’s career has hit a sweet spot with his crime thriller series Giri/Haji premiering today on Netflix worldwide except in the UK, where it screened on BBC Two late last year.
In addition, the 2001 Vca graduate has just directed two episodes of The Great, a 10-part series created by Tony McNamara for Hulu, an irreverent take on the rise of 18th Century Russian Empress Catherine the Great.
UK producer Susie Liggat, who produced Giri/Haji (Duty/Shame) for Jane Featherstone’s Sister Pictures, hired Chessell, whom she got to know after he moved to London eight years ago.
Liggat had put his name forward for a couple of projects she was producing including the Sky Atlantic-commissioned horror/drama Fortitude but could not convince the executive producers he had enough experience.

We talked to the cast of Amazon Prime's Hanna, an adaptation of the 2011 movie, about bringing a new version of the story to life.
Prequels, sequels, and complete re-imaginings. More and more, the stories of the silver screen are finding new life on the small one. Generally (and thankfully), however, it is rare for a TV adaptation of a popular film, movie, or previous TV show to be a straight remake.
In the case of Amazon Prime’s Hanna, a remake is exactly what you get... at first. The first two episodes of this eight-episode first season take the viewer on a very familiar journey. Past that, however, the show offers new twists, turns, and changes that allow the story grow and expand into new avenues of exploration.

100 Streets tells three different interlocking stories that take place in the same London neighborhood. Two of those stories fuse pretty well while the other is fine on its own but really doesn’t connect at all and feels out of place. All is rendered inconsequential, however, in a doozy of a last twenty minutes. Each story culminates in a barrage of conveniently laid occurrences leading to overly melodramatic outcomes for all characters that will have you throwing your hands up in the air and possibly even letting out a giggle.
The first story deals with Kingsley (Franz Drameh), a bright young man from a broken home that’s mixed up in street crime. Not unlike Drameh’s character Firestorm on DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, Kingsley spits fire as well. Or rather, he likes to write and recite poetry. While performing community service at the local cemetery for his most recent arrest,...

Actor Idris Elba has spent the past year lending his voice to three of the year’s most acclaimed animated films, including Disney’s “Zootopia,” Pixar’s “Finding Dory” and the live-action/CGI film “The Jungle Book” as Shere Khan, the fearsome, villainous tiger. But when he’s not performing voiceover work or starring in the latest “Star Trek” film, he’s leading the powerful ensemble drama “100 Streets,” about three interwoven stories in one square mile of modern day London.

Perfect man Idris Elba plays perfect man Max in the upcoming film 100 Streets. A retired rugby player, Max’s seemingly perfect life unravels when his seemingly perfect marriage to former actress Emma (Gemma Arterton) falls apart. The new trailer for the film deceptively makes it look like 100 Streets is all about Max and Emma, but the movie actually follows three different, overlapping stories (yep, it’s one of those heady interwoven ensemble dramas). All three stories take place in one square mile of modern-day London.
Aside from Max and Emma, there’s also Kingsley (Franz Drameh), a small-time drug dealer trying to get off the streets, who meets local stage actor Terence (Ken Stott) while doing community service. Terence helps lead Kingsley down a new and creative path. There’s also cab driver George (Charlie Creed-Miles) and his wife Kathy (Kierston Wareing), who want to start a family ...

Idris Elba is a washed-up rugby star in dire need of an intervention in the melodramatic new trailer for 100 Streets.
Directed by Jim O’Hanlon, the ensemble thriller finds Elba in the role of Max, a former sporting hero who’s left staring a mid-life crisis square in the face. He cheats on his wife Emily (Gemma Arterton), drinks like a fish, and ultimately loses control of everything around him. All of that comes to head when Elba’s lead becomes embroiled in London’s criminal underground, and it’s here that 100 Streets opens up to become a multi-faceted affair revolving around “three extraordinary stories.”
Despite the calibre of Elba and Arterton, this is a formulaic trailer that is heavy on the melodrama and light on the subtlety. Idris Elba’s Max is a stereotypical anti-hero circling the drain, essentially, and that internal struggle to carve out a life beyond...
