The first winners of the 76th Emmy Awards were revealed today as the Television Academy unveiled its honorees in the juried categories spanning animation, costume, innovation in emerging media programming and motion design.
Netflix toon series Blue Eye Samurai was the lone multiple honoree, and it took three juried Emmys — winning for Storyboard, Production Design and Character Design, the last of which was shared with Max’s now-wrapped Clone High. Another canceled Max toon, Scavengers Reign, took the toon prize for Background Design. See the full list below.
The streamers and HBO dominated the juried awards. Other winners include Max’s Adventure Time and Taylor Mac’s 24-Decade History of Popular Music, Peacock’s In the Know and Disney+’s What If… and the documentary Jim Henson Idea Man from director Ron Howard.

On August 14 the television academy announced the winners in several juried categories that will be presented at the Creative Arts Emmys in September. The juried awards are judged by a panel of TV professionals in applicable peer groups, who can choose one winner, multiple winners or perhaps no winner at all after the entrants have been evaluated and discussed.
The big winner was Netflix’s “Blue Eye Samurai” with three trophies for Best Individual Achievement in Animation. It’s worth noting that Netflix’s “Arcane” also won three juried awards in advance of winning Best Animated Program in 2022, so this might be good news for “Samurai” in more ways than one.

Nickelodeon has made a SpongeBob SquarePants Halloween special called The Legend of Boo-Kini Bottom and they've even released a trailer for it that you can watch below. The best thing about this is that it's all done in stop-motion animation!
SpongeBob SquarePants: The Legend of Boo-Kini Bottom tells the tale of the Flying Dutchman (Brian Doyle-Murray), who shows up in Bikini Bottom and he is looking to scare everyone. Since SpongeBob thinks that scary things funny, the Flying Dutchman has met his challenge.
There will be all kinds of changes to the show to give it that fun Halloween vibe:
Bikini Bottom is decked out for Halloween and features Sandy’s treedome as a mad scientist’s lab, including a giant remotely operated Acorn Monster; Mr. Krabs’ restaurant as “The Horrors of the Chum Bucket,” displaying scenes of Plankton torturing food; and Plankton’s restaurant as “The Horrors of the Krusty Krab,...

Since he made his Nickelodeon debut in 1999, SpongeBob SquarePants has had countless adventures (some of them quite trippy, in fact) and his latest looks to be another memorable one for the show's scrapbook, as SpongeBob meets his backbone in the trailer for The Legend of Boo-kini Bottom, a new stop-motion animated special airing on October, Friday the 13th.
Watch the new trailer for The Legend of Boo-kini Bottom below, and in case you missed it, watch a Comic-Con clip from the special.

It is not only the animation community who will mourn the passing of Ray Harryhausen, who died on the 7th of May at the age of 92, but the film world at large. A pioneer of the stop-motion special effect known as Dynamation, wherein animated creatures are blended into a live-action setting, his influence can truly be seen passed like a torch from one generation to the next. As both stars and studios paid their respects, (with Nick Park calling Harryhausen ”one of the true greats, if not the true great of stop motion animation”, John Landis heralding ”a true giant of the cinema” and George Lucas simply stating that without him,”there would likely have been no Star Wars”) it is near-impossible to underestimate both his talent and his legacy. Indeed, you’d struggle to find a director who doesn’t owe a debt to this most revered of visual...

I really don't put much stock in the International Animated Film Society's 2013 Annie Awards, which is why I didn't rush to report on their results on Saturday. One year Disney and Pixar boycott the event, feeling there was an unfair advantage paid to larger contributing sponsors, DreamWorks being the primary example. So with such a nasty stench over the event what good does it do to pay it much mind? That said, I'll be brief in mentioning Wreck-It Ralph topped Saturday night's winners with five awards, including Best Animated Picture. The awards have something like a 75% streak when it comes to helping predict the eventual Oscar winner for Best Animated Feature and as the days have gone on, it's looking more and more like Ralph will be this year's winner (see my predictions here). Pixar's Brave, Laika's ParaNorman and DreamWorks' Rise of the Guardians each took home two awards in lesser,...

Mad Monster Party is a relatively obscure stop-motion animated musical treat from 1967 that many non-genre fans are unaware of. Aimed at children, it is the creation of Rankin and Bass, the production team responsible for so many holiday television specials including Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, Santa Claus is Comin’ to Town, The Little Drummer Boy, and The Year Without a Santa Claus. Unlike these specials, however, Mad Monster Party made the rounds to movie theaters as a feature-length film for Saturday and Sunday matinees. It’s the obvious inspiration for Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993), boasting an infectious musical score that sticks in your head long after the movie is over.

Sunday July 15th is the last day of Comic-Con 2012, and most of us will be completely worn out looking like Spider-Man in the image above. Chances are he's asleep under that mask. Sunday has always been a cool down day for us, we kind of just try to relax a little bit more and enjoy it. That doesn't mean their isn't anything to see or do though!
We've got a Fringe screening and Q&A, Doctor Who, Buffy the Vampire Slayer 20th Anniversary, Sons of Anarchy, the annual Buffy the Vampire Slayer musical screening, and more! I've always wanted to go the Buffy musical sing-a-long, but am usually trying to leave San Diego before it starts.
Just a little reminder, we will be having our annual GeekTyrant meet up this year to meet our readers, which is something we always enjoy doing! That will take place on Wednesday night, and...

The Henson name is synonymous with puppets, or rather, Muppets. Not so much animation, but everyone deserves a shot at it these days, right? According to THR, The Jim Henson Co. has joined forces with a team from Screen Novelties to begin production on Monster Safari. The team includes scribes Craig Zobel and Matt Chapman as well as directors Mark Caballero, Chris Finnegan and Seamus Walsh. Based on a previous Screen Novelties short, the movie will be stop-motion animated and will likely revolve around monsters on some sort of safari, probably in the jungle. I'm not familiar with any of their previous work, but Screen Novelties seems to have a pretty interesting style going and working with Henson will only help that. Although I'm skeptical about anything stop-motion that isn't done by Aardman, this should be an interesting addition to the genre. Check out their website here for an idea...

I hope this is a sign that the Jim Henson Company is coming back in a big way. The Screen Novelties short film Monster Safari is being adapted into a feature stop-motion project for the Jim Henson Co. Craig Zobel and Matt Chapman, who started the site Homestar Runner, will be working with three directors from Screen Novelties, Mark Caballero, Chris Finnegan and Seamus Walsh, to create the feature version of Monster Safari. The story revolves around what happens when the Earth's monsters come out of hiding and a pair of bumbling crypto-zoologists spring into action to save them from a ruthless big-game hunter. "What's great about Screen Novelties is their look and feel is very Henson-esque," Henson Co exec Jason Lust said. "There was a stylistic similarity." It's great to see them break out like this, especially at a place like the Jim Henson Co. "They have a wry,...
