James was born in Los Angeles, and since very early he loved books and stories. An avid reader, he grew up surrounded by all kinds of books, especially fantasy fiction.
James started playing the piano at a very young age, and by high school age he switched to guitar and bass. After high school, he joined the California National Guard while attending college at Chapman.
