“Everything Everywhere All at Once” capped off its run with the guilds by taking home a trophy at the Casting Society of America’s Artios Awards on Thursday. It had previously prevailed with eight of the other nine guilds at which it contended. It lost out only with the sound editors.

Two of its Academy Awards rivals for the top award — “Elvis” and “Top Gun: Maverick” — did win over the sound editors. Those victories are among their overall hauls of four apiece. “Elvis” also prevailed with the cinematographers, costume designers, and makeup artists/hairstylists while “Top Gun: Maverick” scored with the actors, film editors and sound mixers.

“Top Gun: Maverick” got a big boost in its bid for Best Editing at the Oscars with a win at the Ace Golden Eddie Awards on March 5. It prevailed in the drama race at these awards bestowed by American Cinema Editors over two of its Oscar rivals –“Elvis” and “Tár ” — as well as “All Quiet on the Western Front” and “The Woman King.”

Another of the Oscar nominees, “Everything Everywhere All at Once ” won the comedy/musical category over the fifth Oscar contender, “The Banshees of Inisherin,” plus “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery”, “The Menu” and “Triangle of Sadness.”

Since 1990, the film that came up with one of the ACEs went on to win the top prize at the Academy Awards 18 times, including the 2020 winner for best drama editing, “Parasite.” And in 10 of the 14 years when the Ace barometer was wrong, at least one of the Eddie champs was a contender for Best Picture.

American Cinema Editors announced winners in 14 categories March 5 during the 73rd annual Ace Eddie Awards. And all five Oscar nominees were included among the nominations — though spread out between two categories.

Historically, the Eddie winner for theatrical drama has also won the Academy Award 13 of 22 times‚ but not in the last three years. Whether or not that streak will hold remains murky since Oscar nominees “Top Gun: Maverick” and “Everything Everywhere All at Once” both took home trophies.

“The Woman King” director Gina Prince-Bythewood received the Golden Eddie Filmmaker of the Year Award, while film editors Lynne Willingham and Don Zimmerman received Career Achievement Awards.

American Cinema Editors handed out its 73rd Eddie Awards on Sunday, with Top Gun: Maverick editor Eddie Hamilton and Everything Everywhere All at Once editor Paul Rogers collecting trophies for best edited dramatic feature and comedy feature, respectively.

Everything Everywhere – which won the BAFTA in film editing – and Top Gun: Maverick, along with Eddie nominees Jonathan Redmond and Matt Villa for Elvis, Monika Willi for Tár and Mikkel E.G. Nielsen for The Banshees of Inisherin are nominated for the Oscar in film editing.

Everything Everywhere’s Rogers thanked mentors, friends and family, including the Daniels, remembering cutting the movie during lockdown. He also urged diversity, saying, “We can choose what stories we get to tell.” Hamilton wasn’t in attendance and colleagues accepted, reading thanks to those including Tom Cruise and Chris McQuarrie.

The live-action theatrical feature competition has two categories, drama and comedy. Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery (Netflix)

In crafting Rian Johnson’s whodunit, editor Bob Ducsay took a bold approach to this intricate story, placing key information in plain sight. To be sure, just watch the Netflix movie a second or third time and see how many clues were right there all along (such as a nod to one character’s true identity and the source of a crucial cocktail). The meticulously crafted story follows a group of self-proclaimed disrupters who are invited to a weekend on the private island of their wealthy friend Miles (Edward Norton). Daniel Craig reprises his Knives Out character, detective Benoit Blanc, who is also at the island getaway when a murder takes place on the first night.

“It was important to us to make sure that the audience didn’t feel cheated,” Ducsay explains, noting that they decided to be “as honest as we could be with the audience.

“Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery” was conceived by writer-director-producer Rian Johnson as “a whodunit that’s set in modern day that very openly engages with America right here and right now.” The second installment in the comically suspenseful “Knives Out” series (and sixth feature film on Johnson’s resume) finds Detective Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig) interacting with a new set of hoity-toity murder suspects on a private Greek island. On Tuesday, Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio celebrated its New York premiere at the Museum of Modern Art with stars Finn Wolfhard and Gregory Mann.

For the score of “Glass Onion,” Rian Johnson’s hotly anticipated follow-up to his 2019 whodunnit “Knives Out,” composer Nathan Johnson took inspiration from “Death on the Nile” — not this year’s Kenneth Branagh remake, but the original 1978 version with a score from “The Godfather” composer Nino Rota.

“I love Nino Rota so much, and me and Rian grew up loving all his work,” Johnson told IndieWire Crafts and Animation Editor Bill Desowitz at IndieWire’s Consider This FYC Brunch. “Rian really wanted to lean into the fun, and lean into that romantic lyricism which I am such a fan of and Rota was so amazing at. So obviously there’s the suspense and the character moments, but right up front for the main titles, we kind of wanted to say, ‘We’re going to Europe, come along with us on this grand adventure.'”

Turning a completely original movie idea into a box office phenomenon is no small feat in today’s IP-driven marketplace, but that’s exactly what Rian Johnson did when “Knives Out” hit theaters in 2019. It’s even harder to make a sequel that surpasses the original, but many think Johnson has done that as well with “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery.”

When the game ends, the mystery begins.

On Monday, Netflix officially released the full-length trailer for the upcoming murder mystery comedy film “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery,” which serves as a sequel to 2019’s “Knives Out.” A teaser trailer for the sequel was released this September and subtly hinted at the fun to be had.

Written and directed by Rian Johnson, the sequel follows a tech billionaire named Miles Bron, who invites his closest friends to a getaway on his private Greek island. However, things go awry when a dead body is found, which is when Detective Benoict Blanc (Daniel Craig) is enlisted to solve the mystery.

The biggest challenge that Bob Ducsay had in editing “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery” came in trying to make sure that the film’s ensemble got equal footing. “This film is trying to balance all of the characters and keep all the balls in the air and make sure everyone is given their due because regardless of the size of the role we want to try to make sure that all those flavors come together in a way that feels coherent,” he tells Gold Derby during our exclusive interview during the Middleburg Film Festival (watch above).

He’s quick to add that so much of what works with this comes from the script and the performances and that makes his job much easier. “It’s on the page and the actors are giving you enormously great performances, but there’s still a lot to it when you finally put the film together.

The Sony Pictures historical drama, which stars Jonathan Majors and Glen Powell, was a heavy favorite from patrons and could be a quiet dark horse contender in the Oscar race.

Dillard and actor Christina Jackson were both in attendance in Virginia for a post-screening Q&a. Written by Jake Crane and Jonathan Stewart, the film is based on Adam Makos’ novel and tells the inspirational, true story of two elite U.S. Navy fighter pilots who fought in the Korean War in the 1950s.

You can expect to see the next installment of Daniel Craig as Private Detective Benoit Blanc in “Knives Out 2” streaming on Netflix this fall. Variety has learned exclusively that writer and director Rian Johnson’s hotly-anticipated sequel is expected to release in theaters and the streaming platform in the last quarter of 2022.

In addition, the film is expected to also make a festival run before its release, although it’s unknown which ones it’s expected to debut at. With this added layer, we can expect the sequel to be a possible awards hopeful for Netflix next year. The streamer is expected to dominate the Oscar season once again this year, with Jane Campion’s “The Power of the Dog,” Adam McKay’s “Don’t Look Up” and Lin-Manuel Miranda’s “Tick, Tick … Boom!” being heavy favorites to receive best picture attention.

“Dolemite Is My Name,” “The Farewell,” “Jojo Rabbit,” “Knives Out” and “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” received nominations in the feature comedy category. Nominated animated films include “Frozen 2,” “I Lost My Body” and “Toy Story 4.”

For the first time in Ace’s 70-year history, three foreign language films are among the nominees — “The Farewell,” which is partly in Mandarin, French animated film “I Lost My Body” and Korean-language “Parasite.”

On the television side, the spy thriller “Killing Eve” scored Ace nominations for Dan Crinnion for the “Desperate Times” episode and the “Smell Ya Later” episode for Al Morrow.

Winners will be revealed during Ace’s annual black-tie awards ceremony on Jan. 17 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel and will be presided over by Ace president Stephen Rivkin.

American Cinema Editors has spliced together its nominations for the 70th annual Ace Eddie Awards, which recognize outstanding editing in 11 categories of film, television and documentaries. The honorary society will dole out its hardware during the January 17 ceremony at the Beverly Hilton.

“Ford v Ferrari,” “The Irishman,” “Joker,” “Marriage Story” and “Parasite” have been nominated in the dramatic-film category at the American Cinema Editors’ Ace Eddie Awards, which honor the best in film editing.

In the comedy category, the nominees were “Dolemite Is My Name,” “The Farewell,” “Jojo Rabbit,” “Knives Out” and “Once Upon a Time … in Hollywood.”

The most notable omission was “1917,” which contains dozens of cuts but was designed to look as if it was filmed in one continuous, unbroken shot.

In recent years, more than 90 percent of the Oscar nominees in the Best Film Editing category have first been recognized by the American Cinema Editors. The majority of Oscar nominees have come from the Ace Eddie dramatic category – though for the last two years, the Academy has taken three nominees from the Ace Eddies’ comedy category and only two from the drama category.

Awards ceremony takes place in Los Angeles on January 17, 2020.

Hollywood finally gets kaiju big battles right in “Godzilla: King of the Monsters,” a film whose approach is part 21st-century action franchise and part 1970s Irwin Allen disaster saga (fill the cast with prestigious actors and give them just enough to do so they can elevate the goofy material).

Whereas 2014’s “Godzilla” made us wait too long for the monster-movie money shots – vamping instead with uninteresting human characters – this one offers a family story made all the more heartfelt thanks to committed performances by Millie Bobby Brown, Vera Farmiga and Kyle Chandler, not to mention a constant stream of the kind of rock-em-sock-em action that makes you want to see a film like this in the first place. As the final installment in the Sequel Trilogy looms closer, Star Wars: The Last Jedi remains a touchy subject online. And at the recent Star Wars Celebration, actor Tom Kane revealed that even he wasn’t completely thrilled with how his character was handled.

Taking over from the late Erik Bauersfeld, Kane provided the voice of Admiral Ackbar in Rian Johnson’s 2017 film.
