Although he did not get along with Marlon Brando while filming Les Révoltés du Bounty (1962), he and Keith McConnell were largely responsible for helping Brando win a lawsuit against a British newspaper.

He declined to receive the British honor of the CBE (Commander of the Order of the British Empire) in 1982.

He was close friends with Sir David Lean, who regretted that Howard was not young enough to play James Fox's role in La route des Indes (1984).

He was close friends with Jack Hawkins and Kenneth More.

He appeared in two Best Picture Academy Award winners: Le tour du monde en 80 jours (1956) and Gandhi (1982). John Gielgud and John Mills also appeared in both films.
