- Although he did not get along with Marlon Brando while filming Les Révoltés du Bounty (1962), he and Keith McConnell were largely responsible for helping Brando win a lawsuit against a British newspaper.

- He was close friends with Sir David Lean, who regretted that Howard was not young enough to play James Fox's role in La route des Indes (1984).
- He was close friends with Jack Hawkins and Kenneth More.
- He appeared in two Best Picture Academy Award winners: Le tour du monde en 80 jours (1956) and Gandhi (1982). John Gielgud and John Mills also appeared in both films.

- Les Révoltés du Bounty (1962) - £100,000
