In 1980, he moved to New York City at the urging of his girlfriend. But shortly after arriving he broke up with his girlfriend, lost his job and spent several weeks homeless - which included sleeping under the marble staircase in Grand Central Station. He later got back on his feet and found an agent and began getting acting jobs in commercials.

In 1985, he suffered what he described as "a nervous breakdown," and was unable to leave his home for several months.

Sheffer claimed in 1990 that he had been diagnosed with cancer shortly after filming Nightbreed (1990) in England. He decided to take time off to himself after the diagnosis and traveled around Europe and India. He finally returned to the United States two weeks before filming started on Blue Desert (1990).

He has a daughter ( Willow Anwar) with Gabrielle Anwar.

In 1975, at age 15, he began competing in regional and state high school drama competitions.

Is godfather to ex-partner Gabrielle Anwar's children, Hugo and Paisley, from her marriage to John Verea.

His hobbies are photography, writing and being outdoors.

Has appeared with D.B. Sweeney in three films: Fire with Fire (1986), Blue Desert (1990) and Fire in the Sky (1993).

Is very interested in music and enjoys writing songs and playing the guitar.

Graduated York Suburban High School (York, Pennsylvania) then attended East Stroudsburg State University (East Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania) to play football. He attended for two years before dropping out to pursue acting.

Brother of writer Hogan Sheffer.

Born on exactly the same date as Valerie Bertinelli of "One Day at a Time" fame.
