“The Day the Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Movie” is one of the animated delights of the year. In the franchise’s first fully 2D-animated theatrical feature, Daffy Duck and Porky Pig (both voiced by Eric Bauza) discover a secret alien plot to take over the world via mind-control and chewing gum, gumming up the works with their inimitable antics in the process.
Peter Browngardt (“Looney Tunes Cartoons”) captures the essence of the wacky odd couple with wit and warmth, channeling the outrageous style of Bob Clampett. But were it not for Ketchup Entertainment, “The Day the Earth Blew Up” would’ve been killed off by Warner Bros. Discovery for tax purposes like the live-action/animated Looney Tunes hybrid “Coyote vs. Acme.” Thankfully, “The Day the Earth Blew Up” will receive a Best Animated Feature Oscar campaign from Ketchup (with a qualifying run starting December 13) ahead of its theatrical opening February 28, 2005.

The post-Star Wars effects boom in the 1980s didn’t just bring sci-fi back to prominence, but fantasy and horror as well. Virtually every filmmaker of the era was desperate to show audiences something they’d never seen before with the newfound era of more sophisticated physical effects. The first non-Lucasfilm production to utilize Ilm, “Dragonslayer” was intended to be a prominent, big-budget example, but tanked at the box office, largely regulated to late-night cable showings.
Though released on DVD by Paramount with little fanfare back in the market’s early days, the film has cultivated a following since its 1981 release, finally earning a bit of recognition with the recent Blu-Ray and 4K reissues and accolades from the likes of George Rr Martin and Guillermo del Toro, the latter of whom contributes a commentary track to the new release alongside the film’s director, his longtime collaborator Matthew Robbins.

Shell is a film made with the intention of being a guilty pleasure. It wants to be the film one would encounter on cable in the middle of the day or late at night. Many films have become popular this way, especially before the days of streaming: scrappy little films with a campy sense of humor and talented cast getting to play around and stretch their acting muscles in ways that feel low-stakes for their career. Worst case scenario, the film becomes a curiosity — not good, but fascinating enough in its badness. And the best-case scenario is becoming one of those hidden gems that have a second life on home video.
That’s clearly what director Max Minghella is aiming for with Shell, a campy horror dark comedy about the unfairness of beauty standards in modern society. Six years after his directorial debut, Teen Spirit, Minghella is back at the...

I always think of my other favorite fictional Chicago doctor when Chicago Med‘s Crockett Marcel is on screen.
The news that Marcel is leaving Med is heartbreaking, but I’ve been there before, in 1996 when Mandy Patinkin’s Jeffrey Geiger left Chicago Hope.
The two characters have a lot more in common than both working for fictional Chicago hospitals, including similar tragedies in their pasts that drove less than desirable behavior during their early episodes.

Of the many crimes the Animaniacs' notorious nemesis, David Zaslav, has perpetrated during his reign of terror as CEO of Warner Bros. Discovery, his blatant disrespect for the Looney Tunes ranks high on the list. As if doing little to promote the terrific modern "Looney Tunes Cartoons" series that are available exclusively on Max wasn't bad enough, Zaslav's regime has also yanked a whole lot of golden age "Looney Tunes" shorts from its streaming service and killed the live-action/animated hybrid feature "Coyote vs. Acme" solely for the sake of a tax write-off. Sadly, it seems we'll never know if Dave Green's New Yorker-inspired legal satire was an entertaining as the early buzz suggested. Nevertheless, 2024 is shaping up to be a major year for Bugs, Daffy, Porky, and the rest of the Looney gang.

Look up “cartoon villain” in the dictionary, and you’re likely to find a picture of David Zaslav. Since taking over Warner Bros. Discovery, he’s cast aside not one, but two feature-length Looney Tunes projects. Last November, there was the live-action/animated hybrid “Coyote vs. Acme,” which was given the “Batgirl” treatment. Lower profile but no less deserving of a proper release, WB Animation’s hand-drawn Porky Pig and Daffy Duck stand-alone “The Day the Earth Blew Up” was made for Max, but went on the block last fall. It’s still looking for U.S. distribution.
Fortunately, that didn’t stop the Annecy Animation Festival from giving “The Day the Earth Blew Up” its world premiere — and, one hopes, a better shot at seeing the light of day. As it turns out, “Day” is funnier than any film the studio has put out since “The Lego Movie 2...

Before the 2024 Oscars ceremony took place, three of the four eventual acting winners had already filmed TV performances that now put them in contention for the upcoming Emmys. If Emma Stone, Da’Vine Joy Randolph, and Robert Downey Jr. all end up achieving TV academy recognition this year, they will set a record as the first set of three concurrent acting Oscar recipients to appear on the same year’s Emmy ballot.
Randolph, who scored an Oscar in March for her supporting turn in “The Holdovers,” is seeking her first career Emmy notice for reprising her comedic guest role of Detective Donna Williams during the third season of Hulu’s “Only Murders in the Building.” According to Gold Derby’s odds, she comfortably ranks as her show’s strongest guest acting candidate, even outpacing first season nominee Jane Lynch.

On Tuesday evening, Meryl Streep, Kevin Kline and Peter MacNicol hosted a special screening of Sophie’s Choice at New York’s Museum of Modern Art, presented by Lanvin, in celebration of the recent 40th anniversary of Alan J. Pakula’s seminal work.
“We’re a few of the only ones standing that made this film,” Streep said when introducing the movie alongside her co-stars. “There are a few still here: my hair and makeup artist, Jo. Roy Helland, and I believe my wardrobe woman, the great Alba Schipani. But the visionaries for Sophie’s Choice are not: the great writer William Styron, the beautiful soul that was Alan Pakula, and the master of light, Nestor Almendros, cinematographer, not here.”
MacNicol then shared a surprising anecdote about Almendros. “[He] was legally blind and wore eyeglasses that were as thick as Coke bottles,” the actor recalled. “I used to go up to the Thalia...

Like much better dressed students, Ethan Hawke, Cate Blanchett, Claire Danes, Holland Taylor and Sarita Choudhury filed into the basement theater at the Museum of Modern Art on Tuesday to honor an acting legend. It was the fortieth anniversary of “Sophie’s Choice,” the movie that helped launch Meryl Streep into the cinematic firmament. It was a role that she campaigned for, learned to speak note-perfect German and Polish for and, somehow, managed to completely transform into another person for, in this case a refuge who can’t escape the horrors of the Holocaust even as she tries to establish a new life for herself in Brooklyn.
And there Streep was, flanked by her co-stars Peter MacNicol and Kevin Kline, to reminisce about making the movie and to honor their late collaborators. It was a trio of fallen friends that included Alan J. Pakula, the film’s director, producer and writer,...

Calista Flockhart says the anorexia rumors that swirled around her during the heyday of Ally McBeal cast a pall over her experience on the show.

The Emmys were screwed.
Delayed by four months because of dual strikes that upended an entire industry for the better part of 2023, the 75th Primetime Emmys were, under the best of circumstances, going to be impossibly stale by the time they were presented in mid-January.
When they’re presented in September, the Emmys have the awards landscape in general and specifically the TV awards landscape entirely to themselves — the culmination of an artificially constructed TV calendar designed to give pride of place to the TV Academy and its annual distribution of shiny baubles.
But with this new schedule, one that will hopefully never be repeated, the Emmys were stuck as the third awards show honoring television in eight days. The Golden Globes, the Critics Choice Awards and now the Emmys — that’s three awards shows that have given an overwhelming haul of trophies to Netflix’s Beef, HBO’s Succession...

Four original Ally McBeal cast members, star Calista Flockhart as well as Greg Germann, Peter MacNicol and Gil Bellows, reunited Monday night during the Emmy broadcast on Fox more than 26 years after the debut of the legal dramedy, which aired on the network for five seasons, from September 1997 to May 2002.
The bit started with Flockhart washing her hands in a replica of the show’s famous unisex bathroom.
“I knew I drank too much water; I had to take my Spanx off, I had to put my dress back on,” Flockhart is heard “thinking” in a voiceover before she takes a look in the mirror and tells herself, “Girl, you look good.”
That is when there is a series of three toilet flushes, each followed by an Ally McBeal cast member, MacNicol, Bellows and Germann, coming out of a bathroom stall.

The Ally McBeal cast takes time to dance on 2023 Emmys and has quite a bit of fun doing so — to the point that host Anthony Anderson has to remind them why they’re there (to present an award). Calista Flockhart (Ally McBeal), Greg Germann (Richard Fish), Peter MacNicol (John Cage), and Gil Bellows (Billy Thomas) reunited where else but the bathroom set from the show. “I knew I drank too much water. I had to take my Spanx off. I had to put my dress back on,” Flockhart’s voiceover played as she looked in the mirror. “Woah, girl, you look good.” Then MacNicol, Germann, and Bellows all came out of the same stall to join Flockhart and dance, until Anderson reminded her she was there to give out an award. How could anyone blame them, though, when it was so clear how much fun they were having? It was short,...

You may have heard that the 75th edition of the Emmy Awards is finally happening on Monday, capping a nearly four-month delay resulting from the twin WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. I think “Gunsmoke” and “The Andy Griffith Show” were still all the rage when this process began, JFK was President and a loaf of bread was a quarter. Alas, I exaggerate (though just a bit). But for this and no doubt other reasons, the TV Academy is clearly in a nostalgic mood, slating mini-reunions and tributes to and/or visual recreations of a dozen shows to mark the occasion.
The idea, according to the Emmy producers, is to honor television throughout the decades of its existence, from the 1950s (“I Love Lucy”), to the 1960s (“The Carol Burnett Show”), the 1970s (“All in the Family”), the 1980s (“Cheers”) and the 1990s (“Ally McBeal” and “Martin”) through the early 2000s.

TV cast reunions are all the rage right now, thanks to shows like Frasier, Night Court, And Just Like That… and more. Audiences love nostalgia, and TV networks know people will tune in to see their favorite ensembles reunited. The Television Academy has announced the full list of performers and presenters who will appear at the upcoming 75th Emmy Awards.
The show, which was originally supposed to air in 2023, will now take place on Monday night (January 15) at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles.
The ceremony is going to air on Fox and will be broadcast live coast-to-coast. It will be available on Hulu the next day.
The executive producers of the show have teased that there will be “show-stopping cast reunions and tributes to hit television series spanning seven-plus decades.”
Host Anthony Anderson also revealed his unconventional plan for keeping things moving on Emmy night. Instead of the traditional play-off music to wrap up long speeches, for the first time in Emmy history, his mother, Doris Bowman aka Mama Doris, will act as the “enforcer” to ensure a swift pace of the telecast.

Fox is bringing back two of its 1990s staples — “Martin” and “Ally McBeal” — for one night only. The two shows are among the roster of cast reunions planned for the 75th Emmys on Fox this Monday.
Emmy Awards executive producers Jesse Collins, Dionne Harmon and Jeannae Rouzan-Clay have planned a ceremony that leans heavily on the history of TV, given the award’s diamond anniversary. Tributes and reunions will focus on decades from the 1950s to the present.
“I think they’ll be talking about the ones that they may see on the screen,” Rouzan-Clay says of the reunions. “Those are going to be a big talking point, a big watercooler moment, if you will. … It was a grand task to figure out how to celebrate 75 years of television. Steven Spielberg had tackled serious subjects before, but none of his previous work had the power and artistic vision of “Schindler’s List,” which celebrates its 30th anniversary this year. Based on the book by Thomas Keneally, “Schindler’s List” relates the true story of Nazi party member and war profiteer Oskar Schindler, who ended up saving 1,000 Jews from the Nazi death camps during World War II. Shot in black-and-white-save for a little girl wearig red coat- ‘Schindler’s List” is often a difficult watch, but it’s message of “Never Forget” is particularly relevant today with the rise of anti-Semitism and the white power movement. The epic stars Liam Neeson as Schindler, Ben Kingsley as the Jewish manager of Schindler’s factor and Ralph Fiennes, terrifying as a ruthless Nazi commandant Amon Goth.
The reviews were laudatory and despite its length — 3 hours 15 minutes — “Schindler’s List” made over $322 million worldwide. Nominated for 12 Oscars...

Chris McKay's new horror/comedy "Renfield" has a whimsical premise: it seems that when Count Dracula was vanquished at the end of Tod Browning's famed 1931 feature film "Dracula," he wasn't quite dead. His weaselly assistant Renfield, played in 1931 by the incomparable Dwight Frye, absconded with Dracula's remains and went into hiding. Renfield, now immortal and made powerful by eating bugs, stalked the night to find victims for his still-barely-alive vampire master. Dracula would drink blood, slowly grow back from the brink, and eventually be a whole monster once again. Once empowered, however, Dracula would go a little hog wild and being drinking the blood of nobles willy-nilly. This would inspire another round of attacks, Dracula would be vanquished once again, and the cycle would repeat.
"Renfield" catches up with Dracula (Nicolas Cage) and Renfield (Nicholas Hoult) in the modern day while Dracula is in one of his recovery periods.

In the 30-year history of the Screen Actors Guild Awards, there have been 104 instances of TV costars competing directly against each other. This has happened at least 13 times in each of the guild’s six individual TV categories, with the highest number of cases having involved male comedy series performers. Since 1995, 14 different pairs and one trio of cast mates have faced off in the Best TV Comedy Actor category, making for a total of 29 occurrences including rematches. So far, four of the men involved in these battles have won.
This category’s high costar showdown total is partially attributed to “Frasier” actors Kelsey Grammer and David Hyde Pierce, who were nominated together eight consecutive times. Pierce prevailed once in 1996 and was later joined on the winners list by Robert Downey Jr., Jason Sudeikis, and Jeremy Allen White. Although he won Emmys in 2018 and 2019 for his work on “Barry,” Bill Hader was unfortunately kept from repeating his success at the SAG Awards by Tony Shalhoub and his “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” cast mates. Following a pandemic-induced three-year hiatus, Hader has now received his third pair of comedy actor and ensemble SAG Award nominations for the HBO series. Since Shalhoub was doubly overlooked this time and reigning back-to-back comedy actor champ Jason Sudeikis (“Ted Lasso”) is out of contention, Hader’s path to individual victory is clearer than ever.

Paramount Home Entertainment has announced that they will be giving the 1981 fantasy film Dragonslayer a 4K Uhd and Blu-ray release on March 21st – and copies are already available for pre-order at This Link! The discs will include over an hour of new special features, as well as an audio commentary with Dragonslayer director Matthew Robbins (who wrote the screenplay with Hal Barwood) and Dragonslayer fan Guillermo del Toro.
Robbins and del Toro have worked together several times over the years, co-writing the screenplays for Mimic, Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark, Crimson Peak, and Pinocchio.
Dragonslayer has the following synopsis: Set in sixth-century England, an ill-tempered, fire-breathing creature—ominously known as Vermithrax Pejorative—terrorizes its citizens until a young sorcerer’s apprentice named Galen (Peter MacNicol) is reluctantly tasked with confronting the beast. For Galen to succeed, it will take more than magic to defeat the dragon.

It is difficult to imagine audiences ever found Dwight Frye scary in 1931, but they apparently did. With his high-strung voice and bug-eyed stare—all suggesting the countenance of someone who hasn’t slept in weeks yet feasts on coffee by the hour—Frye is unforgettable as R.M. Renfield, the doomed solicitor who foolishly traveled to Castle Dracula alone in the 1931 film version of Dracula. But scary? He was more a figure of tragedy… or from the right point of view, farce.
It would seem Nicholas Hoult, Nicolas Cage, and the entire team making this spring’s peculiar comedy-horror hybrid, Renfield, would agree. Yes, Renfield is the Count’s worshiping and deranged servant. In Stoker’s novel Renfield is sent to an asylum and treated by Dr. John Seward, who describes him thusly:
“R. M. Renfield, aetat 59. Sanguine temperament, great physical strength, morbidly excitable, periods of gloom, ending in some fixed idea which I cannot make out. I presume that the sanguine temperament itself and the...

Upon reflection, there couldn't be two '90s Hollywood studio films that are more opposite than Barry Sonnenfeld's "Addams Family Values" and Robert Zemeckis' "Forrest Gump." Both released in the mid-1990s (although the novel "Forrest Gump" was released a decade before making it to the big screen), the two films might represent the ends of an anarchist spectrum. On the one hand, the Addams family is a creepy bunch of murderers who live in a strange haunted mansion, and who take delight in the misery of others. They live far out on the fringe and they love it. They spray blood on people, pour boiling oil on Christmas carolers, and, in the famous climax of "Values," kill off all the counselors at a summer camp.
"Forrest Gump," meanwhile, is a cube of American cornpone about the Rockwellian nature of old American institutions. "Forrest Gump" argues that the inside was the place to be,...

Ma-li-bu Bar-bie!
It’s already the end of November, but we had a wild ride this month discussing the dream-like pastel world of Jennifer Reeder’s women-centric Knives and Skin and the 25th-anniversary fascist machismo world of Paul Verhoeven’s Starship Troopers. Then last week we made our second foray into animated fare (after ParaNorman) with Satoshi Kon‘s stunning first film, Perfect Blue. This week, in celebration of Thanksgiving and Netflix’s release of Wednesday (review), we’re visiting the Addamses in Barry Sonnenfeld‘s better-than-the-original sequel Addams Family Values (1993)!
In the film, Gomez (Raul Julia) and Morticia (Anjelica Huston) celebrate the birth of their child Pubert (Kaitlyn and Kristen Hooper), while black widow serial killer Debbie Jellinsky (Joan Cusack) marries Fester Addams (Christopher Lloyd) with the intent to murder him for his inheritance. Plus, teenagers Wednesday (Christina Ricci) and Pugsley (Jimmy Workman) are sent to a summer camp...

After a decade of sensational work in New York City theater (for which he won two Tony Awards), Kevin Kline was at last ready to make his motion picture debut. He couldn't have chosen a buzzier project than Alan J. Pakula's "Sophie's Choice," a shattering drama based on the National Book Award-winning novel by William Styron. Pakula had been wowed by Kline's bravura performance in the 1981 Broadway revival of "The Pirates of Penzance," and believed the effervescent actor could capture the alternating charm and terror of Nathan Landau, a seemingly brilliant chemist engaged in an abusive love affair with Sophie, a Polish immigrant haunted by a horrible sacrifice she was forced to make during the Holocaust.
For the part of Sophie, Pakula was torn between the brilliant Norwegian actor Liv Ullman and the unknown-in-the-u.S. Slovakian performer Magdaléna Vášáarová. Unfortunately for these two, Meryl Streep had serious designs on the role,...

Bram Stoker once envisioned his most successful novel, Dracula, as a stage play. The actor he wanted to play the title role, Sir Henry Irving, walked out of the table read, yawning and griping about wordiness. It was probably the most auspicious walkout in horror entertainment history. Had Irving starred in a bomb, Bela Lugosi, Frank Langella, Gary Oldman, and quite a few other actors wouldn’t have been able to don the cape.
Dracula wasn’t the first book about vampires, but it was the first time Vlad “the Impaler” Tepes was portrayed as one. Until then, people thought of him as a cruel tyrant who nailed hats onto the heads of monks, and dipped his bread in the blood of vanquished soldiers. That is if they thought of him at all, outside of Romania, which celebrates him with pride as a freedom fighter and national protector, the “son...

A new iteration of the beloved TV show “Ally McBeal” is said to be in the works.
The new series will be a sequel rather than a reboot and will focus on a young Black woman who joins the law firm from the original “Ally McBeal” after she graduates from law school, according to Deadline. The lead character will reportedly be the daughter of McBeal’s one-time roommate, D.A. roommate Renée Raddick (Lisa Nicole Carson).
As for Ally McBeal herself, Calista Flockhart, her involvement in the project is currently unclear. Per Deadline, “Flockhart has been approached to reprise her title role from the original in some capacity and to executive-produce the followup.” However, the outlet added that “a decision on her potential involvement likely won’t be made until a script has been written.”
This isn’t the first time talks of Flockhart returning to TV as McBeal have made headlines.
