For this month’s installment of “TV Terrors” we revisit the small screen adaptation of 1980s movie “Weird Science,” which aired from 1994 – 1998 on the USA Network.
I probably sound like an old fogy when I say this, but the USA Network of the cable television heyday was drastically different than the USA Network we have today. Back in the early nineties, USA Network was a free for all of weird, fun entertainment. There were adult cartoons, erotic thrillers, “Up All Night,” sports events, a large Saturday morning cartoon line up, classic horror movies, Troma double bills, and there were even kung fu movies every weekday morning.
USA Network also aired the primetime TV series adaptation of “Weird Science.”
The classic John Hughes sci-fi comedy from 1985 was adapted in 1994 into a mostly faithful TV version that took everything scandalous about the original film and amped up the ridiculousness by about fifty percent.

Science and technology have advanced significantly since the 80s. With things like Bluetooth technology, 3D printing, VR and Ar goggles, and the scary progression of AI, science could also get a lot weirder. And one person who wholeheartedly endorses a potential exploration into these possibilities with in a new film is Anthony Michael Hall. Hall, who capitalized on his awkward years in movies like The Breakfast Club and Sixteen Candles, had recently given his seal of approval to the notion that his classic film Weird Science could potentially receive a remake.
ScreenRant reports on Hall speaking about this topic in an interview with Inverse as he promotes his upcoming Netflix movie with Jessica Alba, Trigger Warning. While the idea of a remake has probably been thrown around in the past, Hall says he isn’t aware of any immediate plans for one. However, he mentions that he’s also not opposed to one.

Zelda Williams has wonderful memories of being on film sets as a kid, watching her father, Robin Williams, shoot movies like Hook and Bicentennial Man. But that doesn’t mean she inherited his bombastic sense of humor. “I’m a bit darker,” says Williams, 34. “I’m the person who laughed during Hereditary.”
Williams is putting those dark impulses on full display in her feature directorial debut, Lisa Frankenstein, in theaters Feb. 9. Written by Diablo Cody, the film is an Eighties retelling of the Mary Shelley classic (think less chemistry experiments,...

Bill Paxton was an incredibly nice man who excelled at playing world-class jerks. He popped in small roles in Franc Roddam's "The Lords of Discipline" and Walter Hill's "Streets of Fire" before getting to strut his smug stuff as Chet, the world's worst big brother, in John Hughes' "Weird Science." From there, Paxton was off and running. Hudson in "Aliens" and Severen in "Near Dark" are two of the most quotable heels of the 1980s. Then he segued to hugely sympathetic leading man roles in films as diverse as Carl Franklin's southern fried neo-noir "One False Move" and Jan De Bont's mega-blockbuster "Twister."
Whether he was playing a swaggeringly vicious vampire or a naive, eager-to-please police chief, Paxton drew us in. He made bold choices, which gave every scene a charge because we never knew how he'd play any given moment. He was a mischief-maker in this regard.

John Hughes' 1985 sci-fi sex comedy is, true to its title, something of an oddity. The premise of the movie is clearly cut from the adolescent sex fantasies of a teenage boy: Using a super-advanced computer system, a power source stolen from the government, and other common everyday objects around the house, a pair of high school horndogs (Ilan Mitchell-Smith and Anthony Michael Hall) manage to electrically manifest The Ultimate Woman to serve their every desire. Their creation, Lisa (Kelly LeBrock), in addition to being a tall, gorgeous adult, also possesses bizarre magical powers, and she is able to conjure cars out of thin air....

When appraised in the cold light of day, The Wild Life (1984) stands as a fairly minor ’80s teen comedy, lacking the flash of broader, more risqué fare like Porky’s (1982) or the great characters that populated instant classics of the genre like 1982’s Fast Times At Ridgemont High (more on that in a second), Ferris Bueller’s Day Off (1986), or one of this critic’s personal favorites, Real Genius (1985). So why are we talking about the film’s recent Kino Lorber Blu-ray release at all?

Woo Hoo! We’re girl-starved teen nerds, and we’re cooking up our own living sex toy with our home computers! John Hughes turns an infantile idea into one of his not-bad teen angst comedies, as Kelly LeBrock materializes to fulfill their wildest dreams. The idea is of course transformed into a basically benign coming-of age story … with the underlying message that we’d not all mind having Ms. LeBrock reformat our hard drive. It all begins as a bad arrested-development joke, but Hughes’ audaciousness and fine production values make this a nostalgic favorite for folk that miss their (ugh) 1980s memories.

If you can’t get a date… make one! After proving himself the king of heartfelt teen flicks with Sixteen Candles and The Breakfast Club, writer-director John Hughes infused the genre with a hefty dose of whacked-out sci-fi comedy in Weird Science, a film where every teenage boy’s wildest fantasies come to life.
Perennially picked-on high school nerds Gary and Wyatt (Ilan Mitchell-Smith) are sick of their status at the bottom of the social food chain. Using Wyatt’s computer, the two hatch a plan to create their dream woman – and following a massive power surge, that woman unexpectedly appears in the form of Lisa (Kelly LeBrock). Ilan Mitchell-Smith, who famously played Wyatt in 1985's 'Weird Science,' makes a cameo in the season premiere of 'The Goldbergs.' But that's not all -- he also teased a wild idea for a sequel to the movie!

I've said it before, and I'll say it again... The Goldbergs is one of the best shows on TV and if you're not watching... what are you waiting for!? It's so good! The nostalgia aspect of the series is what resonates with me most.
One of the things the series does that I love is when it features themed episodes that are inspired by classic 80s movies. Over the years they've played with The Breakfast Club, The Karate Kid, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, Dirty Dancing, The Goonies, Say Anything, A Christmas Story, Knight Rider, Misery, and Commando.
Now according to Goldbergs star Wendi McLendon-Covey, the Season 5 premiere will be a Weird Science-themed episode! I love that movie and I'm so excited that The Goldbergs is going to get a whole episode that pays tribute to the classic John Hughes movie.
In case you don't remember, Weird Science follows the story of two geeks,...

I don’t know if you’re anything like me, but I can often spend hours upon hours trawling through iTunes looking for new movies to buy… Usually I’ll randomly come across a title I haven’t seen in years and use the “Cast & Crew” links to make my way down the rabbit hole to the more obscure side of Apple’s digital movie service.
Now whilst many will decry that iTunes is a terrible VOD service due to Apple’s desire to lock its audience to their platforms, if you have an Apple TV or iPad be aware – there are some truly obscure films hidden away in the depths of the vast collection of movies. Some of which have been made available in the UK for the first time since VHS and a Lot that have been added to the service in their original uncut form!

30 years ago today, two geeks from Shermer, Illinois created Lisa, the perfect woman, with a little computer know-how. That's right, "Weird Science" came out exactly three decades ago and was the third film John Hughes stepped behind the camera for as director, following "The Breakfast Club" and "Sixteen Candles." The flick was also the fourth time Hughes had worked with star Anthony Michael Hall, who appeared in both of the aforementioned films, as well as the Hughes-penned "Vacation." Fun fact: Hall reportedly chose this flick over doing a "Vacation" sequel -- thus starting a franchise tradition of switching the actors playing the Griswold children each film. Joining Hall were Ilan Mitchell-Smith and Kelly LeBrock, a former model who turned her sights towards acting. "Weird Science" went on to become a cult classic and spawned a USA series of the same name, with Vanessa Angel taking over the role of Lisa.

What if you could create the perfect woman just from the tap of a keyboard and a click of a mouse? That's the tantalising premise at the heart of John Hughes's delightfully dorky teen classic, which celebrates its 30th birthday today (August 2).

Two high school nerds are amazed when their perfect virtual woman comes to life (in the pneumatic form of Kelly LeBrock) in John Hughes' ever-popular comedy fantasy. But with a mind as wicked as her body, their creation Lisa is determined to have her fun too.

What's It About? Guillermo del Toro's sci-fi adventure follows the rise of the Kaiju sea creatures, which threaten the future of mankind. In order to fight off the monstrous Kaiju, Jaeger robots are developed, which are controlled by two pilots who share a mental bond. In the face of an apocalypse, former pilot Raleigh (Charlie Hunnam) and trainee Mako (Rinko Kikuchi) are paired up to drive a Jaeger to save the planet.
Why We're In: Del Toro's sci-fi epic is great for every minute of its CGI spectacle ass-kicking. "Pacific Rim" was not only one of the most fun adventures of the summer, but it also featured solid performances from its two leads, along with Idris Elba. When last we visited Clark Kent and Lana Lang, they were at college, leaving Smallville behind and as Season Three of the syndicated series arrived, it came with changes. The first was that Superboy became The Adventures of Superboy and then the focus moved the characters from the well-named Shuster University to a quasi-internship at The Bureau for Extra-Normal Matters in Capitol City, Florida. Clearly, the actors were aging and the premise of them being in college stopped making sense, plus menace of the week stories was becoming tougher to make plausible on the static campus. The more plausible setting worked for super-heroes but certainly took something away from the civilian side of life, a similar issue plaguing Smallville in its latter seasons.

In 1994's The Crow, Eric Draven (Brandon Lee) has his winged-companion with him, to guide him along his vengeful path. But originally, Eric had a second guide, which was the Skull Cowboy. The character, which did originate from the graphic novel, was played by Michael Berryman. An actor, who resembles Sloth from Goonies, and is best known to me as one of the mutant bikers that cause trouble at Gary (Anthony Michael Hall) and Wyatt's (Ilan Mitchell-Smith) party in the hilarious 1985 comedy, Weird Science. Wisely, Proyas cut all scenes with Skull Cowboy, deeming the character as redundant. If you're a Huge fan of The Crow than this information certainly isn't new to you, but if you're like me this will be a fun little treat. Thanks to Star Trek: The Next Generation pioneering first run syndication in 1987, the Salkinds realized the Teen of Steel would be perfect. The series debuted in 1988 with 25 episodes and was pretty laughable stuff. Freiberger was past his sell-by date and the Salkinds didn’t know how to handle the half-hour drama format.

Universal Pictures and Silver Pictures are teaming for a remake of John Hughes' classic 1985 comedy "Weird Science".
The original starred Anthony Michael Hall and Ilan Mitchell-Smith as two nerds who attempt to create the perfect woman to fulfil their sexual desires.
They succeed in creating the bombshell (Kelly LeBrock), but they soon learn she is far more than a sex object. Robert Downey Jr. and Bill Paxton also starred.
The aim with this is to redraw the film with a slightly edgier contemporary take (ala "21 Jump Street," "The Hangover") that could well be R-rated.
Joel Silver, who produced the original, will return here. Andrew Rona is also producing, while Michael Bacall ("Project X," "21 Jump Street") is penning the script.

Chalk another '80s film to the remake machine. The quirky John Hughes directed comedy Weird Science is slated to get "an edgier" remake. Actually, rumors of a potential remake have been circulating for a couple years now, but it looks as though producer Joel Silver, who produced the Hughes original, is set to create another perfect woman with Project X and 21 Jump Street writer Michael Bacall penning the script. Deadline reports that the film will attempt to follow the example set by The Hangover franchise and last year's 21 Jump Street. The original film starred Anthony Michael Hall and Ilan Mitchell-Smith as nerds who attempt to create the perfect woman to fulfill their adolescent fantasies. Kelly LeBrock played the female lead in the original which...

In 1985 movie Weird Science, Gary Wallace and Wyatt Donnelly took some inspiration from Frankenstein to reanimate the dead to create their own not-so-monstrous perfect bombshell of a woman. Now Universal is reanimating Weird Science.
Universal is developing a remake of the sci-fi comedy with Joel Silver, who produced the original, EW has confirmed. Deadline first reported the news. The 1985 original, written and directed by the late beloved filmmaker John Hughes, starred Anthony Michael Hall, Ilan Mitchell-Smith, Kelly LeBrock, Bill Paxton, and Robert Downey Jr.

It seems remakes and sequels are all Hollywood can come up with these days -- and today another one has been added to the list: "Weird Science."The 1985 John Hughes movie is getting a "21 Jump Street"-style makeover, due out next year. The flick will reportedly be "edgier" and probably carry an R-rating.The original flick, which was later turned into a USA Network television show, starred Anthony Michael Hall and Ilan Mitchell-Smith as two nerdy teens who create the woman of their dreams (Kelly LeBrock) with some computer wizardry.Like the "21 Jump Street" remake, we can probably expect a few cameos from the original cast -- so, what do they all look like now?Check out the gallery above to see how well they've aged, plus find out what they've been up to in the past 28 years. That seminal movie in your childhood has likely been remade already, but you can check off Weird Science on the list of remakes. Universal Pictures and Joel Silver, who made the original with John Hughes the first time around, are coming together again for the reboot of the 1985 film that spawned a TV show.
Michael Bacall will write the script. He’s written Project X and the remake of 21 Jump Street. The original movie concerned two teenage nerds creating the perfect woman. It starred Anthony Michael Hall, Ilan Mitchell-Smith, Bill Paxton, Kelly LeBrock and Robert Downey Jr. It sounds like the film will take on a similar identity to The Hangover and 21 Jump Street, and go for “edgier comedy.”...

Hollywood’s remake fever is still in full swing, and now the Wrap’s Jeff Sneider has taken to Twitter to break the latest film looking to get updated for a new generation. If you grew up in the ‘80s, you’re gonna want to know about this one. According the Sneider, the 1985 cult-classic comedy Weird Science is in development at Paramount and Project X/21 Jump Street screenwriter Michael Bacall has been hired to draft the update. The original film was written and directed by the late John Hughes, and featured Anthony Michael Hall and Ilan Mitchell Smith as a pair of high school social misfits who use their computer to create a dream girl (Kelly LeBrock) who helps them overcome their lack of popularity. The original featured lots of laughs and appearances...

If you had to vote for one John Hughes movie to get the remake treatment which one would it be? The obvious answer is Curly Sue, but it looks like we have to wait on that one as a less obvious candidate has actually been green-lit. Universal Pictures and producer Joel Silver are moving forward with a Weird Science remake, and I just want to assure you that this news has not and will not rape your childhood. Hughes really only has two untouchable films in his canon, and this is not one of them. No cast or director announcements yet, but the film is set to be R-rated with Michael Bacall handling script duties. Bacall’s last film, 21 Jump Street, was also an R-rated ’80s reboot and one of the rare remakes that gets it right by honoring the original source material while still feeling fresh. It doesn’t hurt that the movie is ridiculously funny...

Producer Joel Silver and Universal Pictures are planing on remaking John Hughes' classic 1985 comedy Weird Science. As a fan of the original movie, I can tell you that I'm not happy with this remake at all. Silver was a producer on the original film, but I don't think any of Hughes' films should be remade.
According to Deadline, they will "attempt to carve out its own identity by being redrawn as an edgier R-rated comedy in line with 21 Jump Street and The Hangover." I don't know if you saw the original movie or not, but I'd have to say that it was already pretty damn edgy and crude.
The movie starred Anthony Michael Hall and Ilan Mitchell-Smith as a couple of genius teen geeks who create their perfect dream woman to fulfill their adolescent fantasies. Of course, things just get crazy out of control. The movie also starred Bill Paxton,...

It was bound to happen sooner or later, sadly. The Hollywood remake machine has arrived at the work of the late, great John Hughes, with the news that Weird Science is being remade. Hughes' 1985 sci-fi comedy tapped into the dreams of teenage boys, as they created their perfect woman with the help of something with the power of a Commodore 64. More than just a run of the mill and crass sex comedy of its time, Weird Science was a well written and entertaining film that showcased great chemistry between the leads and delivers the laughs on a consistent basis.
So, the remake then. Joel Silver and Universal are teaming up to make the movie happen and have hired Michael Bacall to pen the screenplay. It's...

Exclusive: Universal Pictures and Silver Pictures will remake Weird Science, the 1985 ultimate nerd wish fulfillment comedy that was written and directed by John Hughes. The film will be produced by Joel Silver, who made the original with Hughes at Universal. Michael Bacall will write the script. He scripted the sleeper hit Project X for Silver Pictures and wrote the script for 21 Jump Street, another 80s-centric property that became a hit for Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill. Now, the knee-jerk reaction would be concern about messing with any film by Hughes, who made this comedy right when he was in that wheelhouse of transitioning from screenwriter of Mr. Mom and National Lampoon’s Vacation to director of teen-angst comedies like Sixteen Candles and The Breakfast Club (which preceded Weird Science) and Pretty In Pink and Ferris Bueller’s Day Off (which followed Weird Science). This film will attempt to carve out...

In 1985, John Hughes' Weird Science , his third movie as a director, was a huge stepping stone in the launch of the '80s Brat Pack with Anthony Michael Hall following his appearances in Sixteen Candles and The Breakfast Club , as he was joined by Ilan Mitchell-Smith and a fresh-faced 20-year-old youngster named Robert Downey Jr. It was the seventh film produced by the slightly older 33-year-old Joel Silver. The high concept premise involved two nerdy high school students who are inspired by the movie Frankenstein to create the perfect woman with superpowers using their computer to make the school jocks and bullies jealous. In 1994, the movie's concept was relaunched as a television show by the fledgling USA cable network. Kelly LeBrock played the perfect woman in the original...

Weird Science comedy of 1985 gets reboot via Universal Pictures. Universal Pictures and Silver Pictures are joining for a remake of Weird Science with Joel Silver producing. Sources say that Michael Bacall, known for Project X, and 21 Jump Street, is set to write the new version. That's good news since both of those films were entertaining, and at this time, I don't think there's anyone who can fit the job better than Bacall. The original, and hilariously funny film opened on August 2nd, 1985 and starred Anthony Michael Hall, Ilan Mitchell-Smith and Kelly LeBrock. The story followed two s clever kids who hatch a plan, and, in a very strange project involving cut outs, a scanner, and a "ceremonial" bra-wearing scene, they create a stunning, sexy woman who changes their lives forever. If you haven't seen this one, you're really missing a ton of laughs. I wonder if the girl in this film would be "Into malakes.

How does one not love Robert Downey Jr.? Yes, you can seem like a real iconoclast by complaining about his almost constant presence in blockbusters, but why would you want to? His quick wit, his casual good looks (those chocolate-drop eyes? Mmm), his dedication to his roles, his defeat of drug addiction, and his determined climb back onto the A-list are all good reasons to be a fan. Rolling your eyes at his Marvel career feels like jousting at a windmill. Let Downey have his moment.
Oh, why are we downplaying this? The "Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows" star is a man of many iconic moments, and we here at NextMovie have rounded up nine of his best roles. It's not easy to pick just nine (have you seen "Zodiac"?), but making hard choices is what we do best. We're like Iron Man that way.

The second volley of the Twitch-curated Back To The 80s series continues tomorrow night at the Tiff Bell Lightbox with a 9pm screening of John Hughes' Weird Science. For every former awkward teenage boy who ever wished he could create a woman of his own from scratch, this movie is for you.Precocious computer geniuses Gary (Anthony Michael Hall) and Wyatt (Ilan Mitchell-Smith) are no good with girls--not real ones, anyway. So they do what any teenage boy in their situation would do: use a military supercomputer to create the perfect woman (Kelly LeBrock), who will be theirs alone. Taking a premise that would be positively lurid in other hands, Hughes turns it into a weirdly unraunchy coming-of-age tale, as the virtual sex object turns...

The summer of 1985. Has it really been twenty-five years. Wow! I don't really feel old, but its amazing that era was so long ago and yet the memories feel like yesterday. I was ten going on eleven and enjoying my summer break. Though my parents wouldn't let me leave my neighborhood with my friends, they always took me to the cinema as often as they could, which is where my love of movies comes from. I consider myself fortunate to have shared some great movie moments with my family and with my parents coming to town to visit me this summer, we hope to have some more.Hollywood still makes great movies today, but the eighties were a time when most of the movies you saw were good. At least they seemed to be good at that early age. Time can often be cruel and with maturity comes the revelation...
