Tony Soprano’s strong-willed daughter, Meadow Soprano, was nothing like her parents in The Sopranos. When the series ended, the character had gotten engaged and had big plans for her future life. Jamie-Lynn Sigler, who had a singing background, initially thought that she was auditioning to sing soprano. She was cast in the series in 1997 and shot the pilot episode for HBO.

However, when she returned to film the other episodes of the show in the summer of 1998, she had lost 35 pounds. She hid a serious health condition, an eating disorder called Exercise Bulimia, when she appeared for the audition for the role of Meadow.

Thanks to the movies, superheroes are a cultural force. That glut hasn't exactly come with critical respect for the genre, though. On one hand, it's because these are innately simple stories for children. The other reason, I feel, is because the people who make these movies are embarrassed by that fact. Sometimes that manifests like in the "X-Men" films, where the movies run as far away from the comics as possible to "elevate" the story. Then there's the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which undercuts all its weirdness with "self-aware" humor about how none of its own world makes sense. Some rare filmmakers take superheroes seriously enough without trying to make them into something they're not (e.g. Sam Raimi) but it's rare.
The latest example of this is "The Penguin" showrunner Lauren LeFranc downplaying the series' Batman roots. No, this is a serious crime drama, hence why Oz (Colin Farrell) can't...

What really happened after the cut to black at the end of "The Sopranos"? It's a question that's plagued fans of the HBO mob drama for close to two decades now, but it sometimes seems like a question without an answer. The abrupt end to Tony Soprano's story, which came as he and his family sat down for a fairly normal-seeming dinner at Holston's, was for years presented by series creator David Chase as a sort of Schrodinger's Cat situation. Either Tony (James Gandolfini) is dead, or he's not, but we can't know since we weren't given that information. The end is what it is, and all we can do is make peace with it.
But the fact that so many "Sopranos" fans naturally took the cut to black to mean Tony could've been killed must mean something, right? This interpretation wasn't random, as there were details in the...

“I really regret the amount of fucking verbiage from this morning,” the man in Dr. Jennifer Melfi’s office says. “Who gives a shit, about all these personal questions?”
While this could easily be a quote from Dr. Melfi’s most infamous patient, New Jersey wiseguy Tony Soprano, it is in fact uttered by David Chase — the veteran TV producer who created Tony, Melfi, and every other character on the immortal series The Sopranos. When he says it, Chase is sitting in a recreation of the good doctor’s office,...

Though he’s made films for theatrical release and the occasional series for a different network or streamer, prolific documentarian Alex Gibney and the HBO nonfiction brand have become borderline synonymous over the past decade. It was almost inevitable that Gibney would, at some point, take the serpent’s tail into his mouth and make a documentary about HBO.
Gibney’s first stab at HBOuroboros is Wise Guy: David Chase and The Sopranos, a documentary that is, per its title, completely self-explanatory. Simultaneously tracing the life of David Chase and the run of his game-changing mob dramedy, the two-parter is a must-watch for fans of The Sopranos — even television critics for whom many of its juiciest details are already established lore.
Especially in its 85-minute second part, which has to cover most of the Sopranos’ stretch after its first season, Wise Guys isn’t always as “definitive” as it wants to be,...

Yellowstone has become one of the biggest shows on television, as it should because the series is a brilliant piece of art, which deserves every praise it gets. Created by Taylor Sheridan, the neo-Western drama series revolves around the Dutton family who own the largest ranch in America. While there is a lot of infighting amongst the family they must all stand together to protect what’s there from several enemies. Yellowstone stars Kevin Costner, Kelly Reilly, Cole Hauser, Luke Grimes, Kelsey Asbille, Wes Bentley, Jefferson White, and Ian Bohen. Now, that Yellowstone is ending soon with Part 2 of its Season 5, we are here to suggest some similar shows while you wait for the final Yellowstone episodes.

The lore of “The Sopranos” is dissected in buzzy two-part documentary “Wise Guy: David Chase and ‘The Sopranos.'”
The feature, which debuted at Tribeca 2024, is directed by Academy Award winner Alex Gibney, who once again partners with HBO after helming “The Inventor: Out for Blood in Silicon Valley” and “Going Clear: Scientology and the Prison of Belief.” Per the official synopsis, the documentary “delves deep into the psyche of renowned ‘Sopranos’ creator and writer, David Chase, to illuminate his life and career while offering a unique window into his unparalleled work on the iconic program.”
Of course, as “Sopranos” fans know, the series debuted 25 years ago in 1999.
For “Wise Guy,” director Gibney puts series creator Chase in the psychiatrist’s chair to analyze the origins of the iconic show that drew upon his own upbringing in north New Jersey. Lorraine Bracco, Edie Falco, Michael Imperioli, Drea de Matteo, and...

“Overnight!” That’s what Holland Taylor infamously shouted 25 years ago when she won her first career Emmy Award in Best Drama Supporting Actress for her guest-starring role as judge Roberta Kittleson on “The Practice.” (Watch the Emmy flashback video below.)
Can the esteemed actress now claim an Emmy bookend for playing Uba board chair Cybil Reynolds on Apple TV+’s “The Morning Show”? She’s competing yet again in the Best Drama Supporting Actress race and, just like in 1999, she’s billed as a guest star as opposed to a series regular, so Emmy history could repeat itself.
Taylor has submitted the episode “White Noise” to Emmy judges for this 2024 contest, in which Cybil’s career hangs in the balance when one of her old racist emails resurfaces. Cybil agrees to a damage control interview on the A.M. news program with Black journalist Chris Hunter (Nicole Beharie), but it...

In a very unsettled drama Emmy field, one of the few ostensible locks this year is Elizabeth Debicki. With 4/1 odds, she is the runaway favorite to take home the Best Drama Supporting Actress Emmy for her turn as Princess Diana on “The Crown,” which would make the Netflix series the sixth show to deliver two different winners in the category.
Twelve shows have won drama supporting actress more than once. Of those, seven shows have had one person triumph repeatedly, including “Lou Grant” for Nancy Marchand, who won a record four times, and most recently “Ozark” for three-time champ Julia Garner. The five shows that saw the wealth spread among its cast members are “St. Elsewhere”, “The West Wing”, “Hill Street Blues”, “The Practice” and “thirtysomething”. No show has had more than two cast members win the award.
Interestingly, Marchand (1980-82; her first win was in ’78), Roberts (1983), Woodard (1984), Thomas (1985), Bartlett...

Christopher Durang, one of American’s most acclaimed and accomplished playwrights whose works like Beyond Therapy, Sister Mary Ignatius Explains It All For You and the Tony-winning Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike were as incisive as they were absurdly comic, died Tuesday night at his home in Pipersville, Pa., in Bucks County. He was 75.
His agent, Patrick Herold, confirmed that Durang died as a result complications of his 2016 diagnosis with logopenic primary progressive aphasia (Ppa), a form of Alzheimer’s disease that impedes the ability to process language. He remained out of the public spotlight since his condition was made public in 2022. In February, New York’s Dramatists Guild announced that the playwright would receive its 2024 Lifetime Achievement Award on May 6, placing Durang on a prestigious roster alongside such past awardees as John Guare, Stephen Sondheim and Arthur Miller.

The classic show “The Sopranos” began its life on HBO on January 10, 1999, single handedly launching the Golden Age of Cable Drama. It’s difficult to recall now, but when the show premiered, HBO was not yet HBO, and original programming outside of network primetime was still in its infancy. Creator David Chase crafted a series at once dark and comedic, violent and emotionally vibrant. It introduced the world to entertainment’s ultimate antihero in Italian-American mob boss Tony Soprano, played with power, pathos and perturbation by James Gandolfini. Beset by depression and panic attacks, he showed us what “The Godfather” never did: a gangster in therapy, regularly visiting the office of New Jersey psychotherapist Dr. Jennifer Melfi (Lorraine Bracco) to download his many troubles and come to terms with a toxic mother Livia (Nancy Marchand). Tony’s long-suffering wife Carmela (pitch-perfect work from Edie Falco) and precocious daughter Meadow (Jamie-Lynn Sigler) completed his female-surrounding quartet.

Two years ago, “Succession” earned all of its first three Best TV Drama Actor SAG Award nominations at once and thus made history as the first series to take up that many slots in one of said category’s annual lineups. Unfortunately, Brian Cox, Kieran Culkin, and Jeremy Strong all ended up losing that contest to Lee Jung-jae (“Squid Game”), but each now has a final chance at redemption. In fact, Gold Derby’s SAG Awards odds indicate that the concluded HBO program is on the verge of racking up an unprecedented four individual male bids in 2024, with a five-slot sweep also well within the realm of possibility.
More than three-quarters of our SAG Awards predictors are backing Culkin in this year’s drama actor race, while his on-screen sister, Sarah Snook, has even more support in the corresponding female category. Our current male top five further includes Strong as...

Over the past 76 years, an equal number (55) of direct costar battles have occurred in each of the Primetime Emmys’ two drama supporting acting categories. The female list (which originated a full 20 years before the male one) includes 26 different drama programs, as opposed to 17 on the comedy side. Scroll through our chronological photo gallery to learn more about the Best Drama Supporting Actress category’s many cases of dual, triple, quadruple, or quintuple nominations.
Close to one-fifth of these showdowns are credited to five-time list entrants “Lou Grant” and “Hill Street Blues,” with “The West Wing” and “Grey’s Anatomy” accounting for four clashes apiece. Tied for third place with three distinct battles each are “St. Elsewhere,” “NYPD Blue,” “The Good Wife,” “Game of Thrones,” and “The Handmaid’s Tale.”

“I’m 36 years old and I’ve been lookin’ for a girl every Saturday night of my life. I’m a fat little ugly guy and girls don’t go for me, that’s all.” — Paddy Chayefsky’s “Marty.”

The film would go on to win the Palme d’or at the Cannes Film Festival.
But audiences were first introduced to “Marty” two years earlier as a live hour-long drama on NBC’s “Philco Television Playhouse,” one of the most respected early anthology series winning a 1954 Peabody and eight Emmy nominations. Months after his life was suddenly cut short, Emmy winner Leslie Jordan has a chance to receive more TV academy love for his final small screen performance as Phil on Fox’s “Call Me Kat.” If he does land in this year’s Best Comedy Supporting Actor lineup, he will join a group of 12 other comedy or drama series regulars who posthumously achieved Emmy recognition. If he scores his second victory, he will make history as the first deceased male actor to win an Emmy for a continuing program.
“Call Me Kat” was the first and only multi-season series on which Jordan played a regular role. Since Lorraine Bracco, Edie Falco, and Nancy Marchand all received nominations for the 2000 Best TV Drama Actress SAG Award for their work on “The Sopranos,” the category has seen one more trio and eight more pairs of costars compete directly against each other. Including rematches, there have been 15 total instances that have resulted in four wins for Falco (2000 and 2003; the latter time over just Bracco), Allison Janney, and Gillian Anderson.
Bracco and Falco set the still-intact overall female rematch record of two in 2003. It has since been matched by their fellow drama nominees Julia Garner and Laura Linney of “Ozark” as well as comedy contenders Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin of “Grace and Frankie.” All three pairs rank behind “Frasier” duo Kelsey Grammer and David Hyde Pierce (seven) and “NYPD Blue” actors Dennis Franz and Jimmy Smits (three) on the genderless list.

When Gillian Anderson was honored by the Screen Actors Guild two years ago for her portrayal of Margaret Thatcher on “The Crown,” the Netflix series became the first to ever produce three different solo SAG Award winners. Now, this trio – which includes Claire Foy (as Queen Elizabeth II) and John Lithgow (as Winston Churchill) – could grow into a quartet if Elizabeth Debicki is lauded for her fifth season performance as Princess Diana. This would also make “The Crown” the first show to produce three different recipients of the guild’s Best TV Drama Actress prize.
As a concurrent drama ensemble nominee, Debicki faces double challenges from Jennifer Coolidge (“The White Lotus”) and “Ozark” pair Julia Garner and Laura Linney. This marks Garner and Linney’s third drama actress face-off following their joint losses to Sandra Oh (“Killing Eve”) in 2019 and Anderson in 2021. As the star of “Inventing Anna,” Garner is...

In the 28-year history of the Screen Actors Guild Awards, 11 series have each received two Best TV Comedy Actress nominations at once, with the most recent case having involved “Ted Lasso” cast mates Juno Temple and Hannah Waddingham. The category outpaces most of the guild’s other five individual TV ones in that regard, but remains the only one in which no costar trios have ever been simultaneously recognized. That gap could soon be filled, however, by the ladies of ABC’s “Abbott Elementary.”
“Abbott Elementary” creator Quinta Brunson stars on the ABC series as second grade teacher Janine Teagues and is supported by Sheryl Lee Ralph as veteran educator Barbara Howard and Janelle James as their inept principal, Ava Coleman. Ruth Langmore tragically bites the dust in “Ozark’s” fourth and final season, but the woman who plays her, Julia Garner, is still going strong at the Emmys. The actor doubled her nominations tally this July, racking up two bids, including one for “Ozark” for Best Drama Supporting Actress. This is the third time in a row she is shortlisted for the Netflix series, for which she parlayed both of her previous two citations into victories (2019-2020). Should she now continue her winning streak, she will not only score an unprecedented hat trick but also enter record territory in her category.
First off, she would be the first performer under the current popular vote system — which has been in place since 2016 — to win more than two Emmys for one show. What’s more, a third victory would tie her with Ellen Corby — who triumphed thrice for “The Waltons” in 1973, 1975 and...

With credits like "Kolchak: The Night Stalker," "The Rockford Files," and "Northern Exposure," decades of television work gave "The Sopranos" creator and showrunner David Chase a strong sense of what would and wouldn't work for network TV. Tag-teaming with a strong stable of writers, the HBO drama surrounding a New Jersey-based Italian-American mob family took on the shape of an epic text that would appeal to the masses while also commanding critical respect.
In the writers' room, the nuances of New Jersey mob life were meticulously explored in ways that both nodded to and departed from their gangster movie forebears. Writers for the show would include Terrence Winter (who would go on to helm "Boardwalk Empire"), cast members like Michael Imperioli, and "Northern Exposure" writers Robin Green and Mitch Burgess, the latter of whom understood what Chase was going for -- a crucial part of staying in the writers' room after its fifth episode.

Just four years after making her small screen acting debut on FX’s “The Americans,” Julia Garner landed her first regular role on a continuing series as Ruth Langmore on “Ozark.” Her Best Drama Supporting Actress Emmy wins for the Netflix show in 2019 and 2020 made her the category’s seventh and youngest back-to-back champ. Her six predecessors, all of whom were at least 16 years her senior, were Ellen Corby (“The Waltons”), Nancy Marchand (“Lou Grant”), Bonnie Bartlett (“St. Elsewhere”), Allison Janney (“The West Wing”), Blythe Danner (“Huff”), and Anna Gunn (“Breaking Bad”).
Garner’s first victory at age 25 also made her the fourth youngest person to ever triumph in her category. At the time, she also ranked as its ninth-youngest nominee, and has since been bumped to 10th place. Included among the nine younger actresses on the list are two of her 2019 competitors as well as three child stars.

Tony Soprano (James Gandolfini) is hardly the first gangster to appear on television. When HBO's "The Sopranos" introduced Tony into our homes, it was clear he was no ordinary gangster. He was a family man, a history buff, a cinephile, a jokester, and an anti-hero. Tony likened himself to Michael Corleone (Al Pacino) from Francis Ford Coppola's "The Godfather" trilogy and reminded audiences that mobster movies have been popular since the 1930s. The self-aware and hit television series dared to ask: what final consequences should Tony pay for his criminal life?
Gandolfini's performance in "The Sopranos" is one of the greatest of all time. The late Gandolfini showed how Tony's differing attributes are brought out by other people. Tony is constantly putting on a persona: he wants to appear strong in front of his family, ruthless near his adversaries, collected in front of his underlings, and honest to his therapist,...

"It's all a big nothing." Those words from Livia Soprano (Nancy Marchand) in the episode "D-Girl" define her character and the ethos of "The Sopranos." Even for a show about violent mobsters, it's strikingly cynical about human nature and people's ability to change. By the end of the show, almost everyone has either remained static or gotten worse ... the ones who made it out alive that is.

Pat Carroll, the gregarious Emmy-winning comedienne who was a television mainstay for decades before segueing to a voiceover career that included portraying the villainous sea witch Ursula in The Little Mermaid, has died. She was 95.
Carroll died Saturday of pneumonia at her home in Cape Cod, Massachusetts, her daughter Kerry Karsian told The Hollywood Reporter.
Carroll’s perky personality, screwball wit and impeccable timing made her a great second banana, and Red Buttons, Jimmy Durante, Mickey Rooney, Steve Allen and Charley Weaver were among those who called upon her to make their programs funnier. Her antics on Caesar’s Hour earned her an Emmy in 1957, and she was nominated for her work on the classic variety show the following year.

Emmy voters certainly didn’t spread the wealth around with the 2022 nominations. Five of the seven supporting actress in a limited series or TV movie went to HBO’s “The White Lotus.” Four of the six guest actor in a drama series noms were nabbed by HBO’s “Succession.” And HBO Max’s “Hacks” scored four of the six guest actress in a comedy series nominations.
But multiple nominations in one category isn’t anything new in the Emmy universe. In fact, Emmy history was made 40 years ago when NBC’s landmark police procedural drama “Hill Street Blues” earned all five nominations for supporting actor in a drama series. Michael Conrad won his second consecutive Emmy as Sgt. Phil Esterhaus, who would end the morning roll call meetings with “Let’s be careful out there.” Conrad faced competition from the series’ Taurean Blacque, Charles Haid, Michael Warren and Bruce Weitz.

History was made when the 2022 Primetime Emmy nominations were announced, as Chadwick Boseman (“What If…?”) and Jessica Walter (“Archer”) became the first pair of direct competitors to be recognized posthumously. They are both up for the Best Character Voice-Over Performance prize after having passed away in August 2020 and March 2021, respectively.
Walter is now the only performer to ever receive two post-death Emmy bids, having just contended in the same category last summer. Now including Boseman, the list of departed acting Emmy nominees consists of 26 entrants, four of whom were honored with wins.
The first actor to be nominated for and win an Emmy posthumously was Alice Pearce, who was awarded the Best Comedy Supporting Actress trophy for “Bewitched” two months after her death in 1966. The other three champs, all of whom triumphed for TV movie performances, are supporting players David Burns and Diana Hyland and lead Raul Julia.

Four months after her death in 2021, Jessica Walter became the first deceased performer to earn a Primetime Emmy nomination for voice acting. Her fifth career bid and first for vocal work came for “Archer,” on which she played the titular animated spy’s mother for the last dozen years of her life. After receiving her first posthumous notice for the show’s 11th season last July, she has now been honored with another for its 12th. This makes her the first departed actor ever recognized by the TV academy across multiple years.

Humble Marty Piletti finally gets to home video in its proper widescreen format. Paddy Chayefsky’s TV play-turned theatrical feature really shines in Kino’s new 4K remaster. The performances of Betsy Blair and especially Ernest Borgnine provide the gentle magic, as non-glamorous Bronx-ites learn that two lonely people can find romance. It’s a winning formula and a thoughtful meditation on social reality in the pursuit of happiness. With a new audio commentary by Bryan Reesman and Max Evry.

In 1995, Julianna Margulies became the first — and it turned out, the only — regular cast member of “ER” to win an Emmy when she took home Best Drama Supporting Actress. Twenty-seven years later, she can add a second trophy in the category and join another elite group: a drama supporting actress winner for two shows.
Margulies is in sixth place in the drama supporting actress odds for “The Morning Show,” on which she recurred in Season 2 as Uba anchor Laura Peterson, who starts a relationship with Bradley (Reese Witherspoon). A victory would make her the 11th person to win the category more than once but just the second to do it for two different shows. Tyne Daly is the only one to accomplish the feat, having won for “Christy” in 1996 (she and Margulies beat each other for their wins) and for “Judging Amy” in 2003. If Julia Garner (“Ozark”) ends up winning a third Emmy this year in the Best Drama Supporting Actress category after her victories in 2019 and ’20, she would be tied with Ellen Corby (“The Waltons”), who won thrice in 1973, ’75 and ’76. Together, Garner and Corby would then share the second place position in the category, behind only Nancy Marchand (“Lou Grant”), who claimed a leading four trophies in 1978, ’80, ’81 and ’82.
Currently there are eight women who have two wins apiece in this Emmy race: Kristy McNichol (“Family”), Bonnie Bartlett (“St. Elsewhere”), Allison Janney (“The West Wing”), Tyne Daly (“Christy” and “Judging Amy”), Blythe Danner (“Huff”), Anna Gunn (“Breaking Bad”), Maggie Smith (“Downton Abbey”) and Garner. A couple of notes here: Janney later won two more trophies for “The West Wing” as a lead actress, and Smith claimed a prior statuette for “Downton Abbey” when it was classified as a limited series.

It was a night of record-making firsts and honoring legends from Hollywood’s Golden Era. John Forsythe and Marlo Thomas hosted the 34th Primetime Emmy Awards on ABC on September 19, 1982 — before cable TV and streaming services took over and network TV still ruled the small screen. Read on for our Emmys flashback 40 years ago to 1982.
One of the most celebrated dramas of all time set new records and dominated the acting categories. “Hill Street Blues” received 16 major nominations, breaking the two-decade record of 14 for “Playhouse 90” in 1959. It’s also the first series to receive nine acting noms in one ceremony. It would end the evening tied with “Fame” for the most wins with four, including Best Drama Series, a writing win (it received four out of the five bids in that category) and two acting trophies.

At the 1995 Emmy Awards, Christine Baranski and Julianna Margulies both won prizes in supporting categories, Baranski for comedy “Cybill” and Margulies for drama “ER.” Almost 15 years later, the two actresses would partner on the CBS legal series “The Good Wife,” which ran seven seasons and netted both performers an impressive number of nominations by the time the show wrapped in 2016. This year, they might both receive recognition for new roles — Baranski for HBO’s “The Gilded Age” and Margulies for Apple TV+’s “The Morning Show” — and compete in the same category. Their characters didn’t end up in a good place in the series finale after all, remember?

“Overnight!” That’s what Holland Taylor infamously shouted 23 years ago when she won her first career Emmy Award in Best Drama Supporting Actress for playing fan-favorite judge Roberta Kittleson on “The Practice.” (Watch the 1999 flashback video below.) Can the esteemed actress now win an Emmy bookend for her role as English professor Joan Hambling on the Netflix comedy “The Chair”? This time around she’s competing in the red-hot Best Comedy Supporting Actress race.
“The Chair” tells the story of professor colleagues at Pembroke University, led by new English department head Ji-Yoon Kim (Sandra Oh). Despite their age differences, Joan and Ji-Yoon share a friendly rapport with each other at first, though their relationship is put to the test in later episodes. Eventually, Joan is forced to give a vote of no confidence against Ji-Yoon, and the season ends with Joan replacing her as chair.

Having bagged back-to-back Best Drama Supporting Actress Emmys for her turn as firecracker Ruth Langmore on “Ozark” in 2019 and 2020, Julia Garner is currently tied with seven other performers as the third most-nominated actors in the category. Should she now nab a third statuette for the Netflix drama’s fourth and final season, she would enter Emmy record territory by tying Ellen Corby (“The Waltons”) at three wins — though Nancy Marchand (“Lou Grant”) would remain the category’s all-time leader at four wins.
Here are the seven people with whom Garner is presently tied as the category’s third most-decorated actors at two wins:

“Squid Game” star Lee Jung-jae has pulled off a huge win at the Screen Actors Guild Awards, taking down three “Succession” stars in the process. (See our TV winners live blog.) The actor took home the victory in Best TV Drama Actor over “Succession” stars Brian Cox, Kieran Culkin and Jeremy Strong, in addition to Billy Crudup from “The Morning Show.” By winning over a trio, Lee accomplished what only one actor has done before in the history of the SAG Awards.
Looking back on the history of the SAG Awards, there was only one instance where three actors from the same show were nominated together but none of them won the category: TV Comedy Actor in 2004, where the “Everybody Loves Raymond” trio of Peter Boyle, Brad Garrett and Ray Romano all lost to Tony Shalhoub in “Monk.”

Twenty-two years ago, “The Sopranos” actresses Lorraine Bracco, Edie Falco, and Nancy Marchand made history as the first trio of TV performers to face each other in the same Screen Actors Guild Awards lineup. Although Falco nabbed the trophy, costars who face off in Best TV Drama Actress races only have a 31% chance of winning. That stat is based on the fact that the women involved went home empty-handed in nine of the category’s other dozen matchups.
This puts current nominees Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon (“The Morning Show”) in a tenuous position, but victory is still possible for one of them depending on whether or not their competitors meet certain criteria.

In 1998, past Screen Actors Guild Award winner Helen Hunt was honored by her acting peers a second time for the film “As Good As It Gets.” This made her the first woman to earn individual SAG Award prizes for both film and TV performances. She has since been followed by a dozen others, including both Patricia Arquette and Glenn Close in 2019. Now, 2006 Best Film Actress champ Reese Witherspoon (“Walk the Line”) is looking to become the 14th entrant on the list by prevailing for the drama series “The Morning Show.”
In this year’s drama actress race, Witherspoon faces her costar, Jennifer Aniston, as well as Jung Ho-yeon (“Squid Game”), Elisabeth Moss (“The Handmaid’s Tale”) and Sarah Snook (“Succession”). For only the second time in SAG Awards history, all five women are also included in the drama ensemble lineup, the final slot of which is filled by the cast of “Yellowstone.

In the 28-year history of the Screen Actors Guild Awards, there have been two instances of costar trios being nominated against each other in the drama actress category. Lorraine Bracco, Edie Falco and Nancy Marchand (“The Sopranos”) set that precedent in 2000 and were followed just last year by Gillian Anderson, Olivia Colman and Emma Corrin (“The Crown”). Until this year, there were no cases on the male side, but now, “Succession” stars Kieran Culkin, Brian Cox and Jeremy Strong constitute the first. Of the three, Culkin is the only SAG Award newcomer, and that freshman status may help him stand out to voters.
In addition to his two cast mates, Culkin’s challengers in the drama actor race include Billy Crudup (“The Morning Show”) and Lee Jung-jae (“Squid Game”). All are new to the category except for Crudup, who was nominated here for the same role in 2020. He and Strong...

At the Screen Actors Guild Awards, it is relatively rare that three actors from the same TV show get nominated in the same category. Since the inception of the SAG Awards in 1994, it only happened seven times for the first 27 years. At the upcoming 2022 ceremony, there is an eighth trio that joins this elusive group — Brian Cox, Kieran Culkin and Jeremy Strong from HBO’s “Succession,” who are all nominated in the drama actor category. But can one of them overcome possible vote-splitting and take home the trophy? Let’s take a look back at the previous seven examples of SAG Awards nominated trios.

When the Screen Actors Guild nominations were announced earlier this month, many pundits were surprised to see three “Succession” stars nominated in the drama actor category: Jeremy Strong, Brian Cox and Kieran Culkin. After all, that had never happened before in this race, as the guild forces leads and supportings to compete against each other for only five slots. Is it possible there will now be a “Succession” SAG Award vote-split in this category? Co-nominees Lee Jung-jae (“Squid Game”) and Billy Crudup (“The Morning Show”) certainly hope so, as they’d be the ones to benefit.

After receiving zero nominations for its first two seasons, “Succession” finally broke through at the Screen Actors Guild Awards, receiving five nominations on Wednesday. Not only that, but the Emmy-winning series made some history to boot: It’s the first show to earn three nominations in the drama actor category in the same year.
Brian Cox, Kieran Culkin and Jeremy Strong were all shortlisted alongside former nominee Billy Crudup (“The Morning Show”) and “Squid Game’s” Lee Jung-jae. All three “Succession” men were predicted to be nominated in our odds, with Culkin making a late surge into the top five over former champ Sterling K. Brown (“This Is Us”). “Succession” also received a drama ensemble nomination and a drama actress bid for Sarah Snook.

For a show that’s never been nominated at the Screen Actors Guild Awards, “Succession” could be on the cusp of making history. The Emmy-winning series, which just wrapped up its third season with another superb finale, is expected to finally break through in the SAG Awards’ three drama TV categories — it’s in first place in ensemble and actor and second in actress in the odds. And it’s the drama actor race where it could make the biggest splash and enter the record books as the first show to score three nominations in the category in the same year.
Because the SAG Awards do not have supporting TV categories, all the men and women of TV have to fight for five measly spots in their respective categories. This, obviously, favor the leads, but supporting players pop in here and there. However, no show has produced more than two...

“I was inspired. Nobody writes like David,” declares Tony and Grammy winner (plus Oscar and Emmy nominee) Leslie Odom Jr. about his reaction to first reading excerpts of “Sopranos” creator David Chase‘s screenplay for his highly anticipated prequel film.
“That’s the power of his writing,” he says. “He writes with just enough specificity that you don’t feel out to drift. You don’t feel like the writer is asking you to do all their work for them, but there’s also just enough. He leaves just enough question marks on the material or just enough open that allows you to express your own soul, for you to express your own humanity through his work.” Watch our exclusive video interview with Odom Jr. above.

‘The Wonder Years’ Co-Stars Alley Mills & Dan Lauria Reunite For Off Broadway’s ‘Morning’s At Seven’
Alley Mills will be reunited with her The Wonder Years husband Dan Lauria in the new Off Broadway production of Paul Osborn’s classic stage comedy Morning’s At Seven, a reteaming that comes as Mills replaces the recently injured Judith Ivey.
Mills, who stars on CBS’ The Bold and the Beautiful, joins Lauria and other Morning’s At Seven cast members Lindsay Crouse, Alma Cuervo, Tony Roberts, John Rubinstein, Keri Safran, Jonathan Spivey and Patty McCormack (the latter most famously remembered as evil little Rhoda Penmark from 1956’s The Bad Seed).
The original Wonder Years mom was cast in the role of Arry after Ivey left the production due a torn tendon. (Nancy Ringham was a temporary replacement until Mills could join.)
“We are thrilled to have Alley Mills join our Morning’s At Seven family,” said producer Julian Schlossberg in a statement. “In the theatre, anything can happen,...
