Timothy West, the English star of stage and screen known for memorable turns in U.K. soaps “Coronation Street” and “EastEnders,” died on Tuesday. He was 90.

His children released a statement on Wednesday confirming the news. They said that West died “peacefully in his sleep” and was “with friends and family at the end.”

Born in Bradford, West Yorkshire, England on Oct. 20, 1934, West went on to have a long career on stage and screen. He was a member of the Royal Shakespeare Company for three seasons in the ’60s, and throughout his life frequently played the leading roles in “Macbeth,” “Uncle Vanya” and “King Lear.”

His first big screen role came in 1975 with the TV series “Edward the Seventh,” in which he portrayed the titular king from the age of 23 until his death. From 1983 to 1990, he starred as patriarch Bradley Hardacre in the comedy drama “Brass,” and also appeared in...

According to the British Comedy Guide, the series is a horror satire which pits a group of small-town teenagers (the gen-z of the title) against a horde of toxin-infected, rabid pensioners. It’s a little bit like Rabid Grannies, then, but with a distinctly political, post-austerity, post hope-for-the-future spin.

As the synopsis points out, it’s about “the increasingly stark divisions between generations,” and depicts “a modern Britain at war with itself. Sounds good!

Channel 4 wants the UK television industry to know: the dark days are over.

The 40-year-old British broadcasting institution has suffered one of the most grueling periods in its history after a dramatic ad market slump brutally exposed its business model.

Content was cut or delayed, more than 200 employees were fired, and Channel 4’s foundational relationship with UK producers was tested to breaking point.

But as the sun comes up on the 2024 Edinburgh TV Festival, Channel 4’s chief content officer Ian Katz is attempting to reassure the industry that better days lie ahead.

Hosting a dinner for talent and journalists on Tuesday night, Katz told the room that the ad market is “wheezing back into life” and the picture is “much brighter.”

They will star in Clerkenwell Films’ six-part Truelove, which is written by from Iain Weatherby (Humans) and co-created with Charlie Covell. She wrote the tonally similar Channel 4 and Netflix drama The End Of The F***ing World — another Clerkenwell production.

With a core cast in their 60s and 70s, Channel 4 says the series “breaks the rules for older characters on screen and flips ageist tropes on their head in a series which promises thrilling twists and turns, irreverent humour and passionate romance.”

"The Panthers... You shall all be warriors once more!" 20th Century Fox UK has unveiled an official trailer for a feel-good, cheesy comedy titled Walk Like A Panther, which opens in UK cinemas in March (but no Us release planned yet). The film stars Stephen Graham and Dave Johns (the lead of I, Daniel Blake) as a father-son duo who must team up to help save their local pub when it's threatened. They gather up their old wrestling friends to put on one big show dressed up in their goofy 80's wrestling costumes to make extra money for the pub. The cast includes Stephen Marcus, Julian Sands, Jill Halfpenny, Christopher Fairbank, Robbie Gee, Sue Johnston, plus Stephen Tompkinson, along with Lena Headey and Jason Flemyng. Twentieth Century Fox have announced that British comedy Walk Like a Panther will be released in cinemas in UK and Ireland on 9th March, 2018. Starring BAFTA Award nominee Stephen Graham (Pirates of the Caribbean: Salazar’s Revenge, Boardwalk Empire), British Independent Film Award winner Dave Johns (I, Daniel Blake), Walk Like a Panther is directed by Dan Cadan, making his feature film debut from his own original screenplay.

Well its often said if you want to check out the cream of the movie crop, you have to go British. I mean come on its no secret we are taking over the Hollywood Film and TV landscape with our talent. However you always get something truly special, funny and unique when you head to the cinema for a British-made movie with British-made stars. And Walk Like a Panther is a great example!

Stephen Graham (Boardwalk Empire), Dave Johns (I, Daniel Blake) and Jill Halfpenny (Humans) have been set for comedy Walk Like A Panther, which is now underway in the Yorkshire, England for Fox International Productions.

Screen can reveal the first look at the project, on which British director Dan Cadan makes his feature debut from his own original screenplay.

1. The times they are still-a-changing

As Downton enters 1925, Robert ponders whether their way of living is far too out of date with the rest of the world (well, duh).

After seeing a familiar face hit with a financial crisis, there may be talk of downsizing the staff at Downton, a notion that concerns everyone from Thomas to Spratt. Is Downton preparing to shut up shop and force the Crawleys to fend for themselves?

Principal photography is underway in the UK on comedy-caper Golden Years, produced by MoliFilms Entertainment executive Mark Foligno (Montana, The Rise).

Bernard Hill (Wolf Hall, Lord of the Rings) and Virginia McKenna (Sliding Doors, Born Free) star in the comedy heist film as a retired couple forced into a life of crime after they fall victim to the pensions crisis.

John Miller (Living in Hope) directs from a script he co-wrote with Nick Knowles and Jeremy Sheldon. It marks the feature debut of UK television presenter Knowles, best known for long-running BBC series Diy Sos.

Funding comes from MoliFilms.

Supporting cast includes Sue Johnston (Downtown Abbey), Alun Armstrong (Braveheart), Simon Callow (Four Weddings and a Funeral), Una Stubbs (Sherlock), Phil Davies (Vera Drake) and Brad Moore (The Rise).

Episode six leaves one candidate clearly in the frame for the Sandbrook murders now, but did they really kill Pippa Gillespie?

The unravelling personality of Claire Ripley was the meat of this week’s Broadchurch episode. Is Eve Myles’ character psycho, nympho, klepto, or drongo, boyo? (One thing she obviously isn’t is a decent hairdresser – Ellie’s ‘do hadn’t changed a lick despite all her al fresco twiddling and prodding.)

Claire spent the episode demonstrating the many and varied ways she could be the Sandbrook killer. First, she took out her post-eviction stress on a box of Cornflakes in a violent tantrum that almost certainly lost Hardy his deposit from Massive Cottages For Hobbyist Witness Protection Programmes R Us. Next, she and Lee punctuated their angry, abusive sex with vague comments alluding to how they “had a plan” and “can’t do this”. And...

Broadchurch’s arty direction made this week’s episode even more heightened as a grisly revelation was made…

Like an orange-cagouled lamb to the slaughterhouse, Ellie Miller’s aggressive pursuit of the Sandbrook case after her heart-rending meeting with Tom led her to a grisly discovery. Was that agricultural incinerator the final resting place of Lisa Newberry’s body? Or is it simply another sleight of hand misdirection?

Not yet being in possession of all the facts, we viewers are at a loss when it comes to rationally sifting through them. Better to let the revelations and diversions tumble out at our feet over the remaining episodes while we let the series’ distracting beauty drift over us. And boy, was this episode beautiful.

Whether we have the arrival of The Railway Man director Jonathan Teplitzky or cinematographer John Conroy to thank for it, episode five was Broadchurch as an art-house flick.

With spiralling plots and returning characters retreading old ground, Broadchurch’ second series is really starting to flounder…

It was worth the wait, wasn't it? After nearly two years of speculation, a month of mysterious adverts on loop on ITV and CIA-esque level of secrecy surrounding the plot, Broadchurch series 2 finally arrived last night.

As writer Chris Chibnall promised, this wasn't simply another murder mystery whodunnit in the same town. In fact, it's quite the contrary - it's a can-you-prove-he-did-it.

Oh and that little case in Sandbrook that tormented Di Alec Hardy in series one. Yes, that reared up again.

At the end of the opening hour, we were left with questions piled on top of questions, and with a week to wait before we get episode two, here are the 20 most burning matters that we'll be mulling over until next Monday.

1. Why did Joe plead 'not guilty'?

Among popular American programming, the series that Gracepoint (and its British precursor, Broadchurch) has been closely linked to is AMC’s The Killing. In its premiere season, that dreary mystery also focused on a tattered relationship between two detectives as they investigated a youth’s death, while also shining a light on a grieving family trying its best to remain strong during a hopeless time. However, The Killing’s first season is most prominently remembered for the fan divisiveness that greeted its finale. One expects a similar wrath and disappointment heading toward creator Chris Chibnall for Gracepoint, albeit from two different crowds.

The first group that could (and should) complain is the viewers who watched Broadchurch and were promised that this American translation would feature a different ending. While there are some changes, many of the concluding notes from its predecessor are here – enough to make one who watched both...
