Bharat faces challenges in leading his family after taking the responsibilities following his father's death.

Karan Singh, the younger scion of a wealthy zamindar (heriditary land owners) who lives in feudal splendour. His older brother 'lords' it over the hundreds of serfs who contribute to the wealth of their family. Karan lives an alcoholic, hedonistic life with wine, women and song for companions. The airline stewardess, Savithri makes a profound influence on the dissolute young man during a flight. Later her rescues her from a fate 'worse than death' and Savithri finds herself in the employ of the estate and living in the haveli (palace) of Karan's family. Association between Karan and Savithri blossoms into love. Caught in the web of palace intrigues, Savithri is implicated in the theft of a precious necklace. While greed for the inherited property and petty jealousy weave their web of malice the love of this amorous couple has to pass the litmus test of suspicion. Reduced to rags and a hovel, Savithri, her parents and siblings eke out a miserable life while maintaining their high moral and ethical standards. Is Karan and Savithri's love strong enough to survive the turbulence of high society expectations, greed, poverty and intrigue?

Mangal Singh (Rajesh Khanna) has been a career criminal, whose criminal career began to steal food and to keep from starving, and thence got him in deeper and deeper in the criminal world. His crimes have caught up with him and he is sentenced to be hanged. He dramatically escapes with the help of underworld don, Suraj (Pinchoo Kapoor), and is on the run from the police. He lands up in a small village in Northern India, and becomes a school-teacher with the help of local restauranteur, Bijli (Mumtaz). He takes on the identity of Ramu, a friend of Shravan, and goes to live with Shravan's parents, Lalaji (Om Prakash) and Malti (Nirupa Roy), little knowing that they are the parents of a man he killed while escaping from the police.

Maanav is an orphan who was brought up by a Catholic Priest, Father Francis. After completing his M.A. he returns home to Taran Devi and finds out that his mentor his dead. He re-locates to Bombay by train, and a man named Gopichand Sharma attempts to steal his luggage, but Maanav chases him and retrieves it. Both men become friends, despite of their differences - Maanav wants to lead a honest life, and Gopichand, who is estranged from his wife, a nurse, Kalyani, and son, Munna, is an alcoholic and thief. Gopichand eventually changes his lifestyle, decides to be honest, patches up with his family, but ends up antagonizing his crime boss, Monto Sardar, who chops off his right hand. Maanav gets him a job with Hercules Milk Foods. Maanav meets with and falls in love with Kaajal Gupta, who is the daughter of the owner of Hercules Milk Foods, much to the chagrin of her dad who wants her to get married to Shyamal. Then one day Maanav disappears from Gopichand and Kaajal's lives. He re-locates to Simla and it is here that he learns that things have spiraled out of control as Gopichand has been arrested for marketing contaminated milk powder resulting in the deaths of hundreds of children. Maanav decides to return to Bombay and attempts to try and make sense why Gopichand committed this crime.

Vijay, who loves Rekha, is framed by her father for a crime he did not commit. However, he escapes from prison to prove his innocence and reunite with his lover.

Manmohan alias Moni lives a dual life. One as a magician, and the other as a thief with the name of Bhagula Bhagat, whose prime agenda is to rob the rich, and spread the wealth with the poor. He meets with a young woman named Sunita alias Soni, and both fall in love with each other. Things change for the better for Soni, when she meets her wealthy long-lost father, Daulatram, and goes to live with him. She decides not to have to do anything with Moni. When Moni attempts to meet Soni to find out why she has rejected him, she refuses to meet him. Then Moni finds out that Soni is not who she claims she is, and definitely not the daughter of Daulatram, but the daughter of another wealthy man named Nandlal, who had died under mysterious and destitute circumstance.

Sudhakar secretly marries Padma, the pampered daughter of a wealthy businessman. But, when they move in with his widowed mother, Padma's spoiled behaviour could split them apart.

Rajesh Khanna plays Mumtaz's jealous husband who begins to doubt her fidelity when his best friend Sanjeev Kumar enters their lives. She is unable to convince Rajesh Khanna that she loves only him. He leaves her, not knowing that she is pregnant with his child. Depressed and confused, Rajesh Khanna becomes a homeless wanderer, while Mumtaz remarries to provide a secure home for her child. Many years later, the truth dawns on him as he turns up, a broken man, at his own daughter's wedding.

A poor rickshaw-puller adopts an abandoned child and brings him up as his son but tragedy strikes when the boy becomes crippled as a result of polio infection.

After the tragic passing of his parents, Raj Kumar is also separated from his elder brother. It is in this atmosphere that Raj grows up and calls himself Raju Tardeo, for this is the area allocated to him to carry on stealing. Raju comes to know that a wealthy woman named Kamini has run away from home, and a reward has been placed in all newspapers. He finds her, pretends to fall in love with her, steals her necklace, and takes her back home to her oppressive uncle, who wants her to get married to Ranjeet. Kamini manages to run away, this time weary of running into the cunning Raju, who she had fallen in love with, only to fall in the clutches of a criminal don by the name of Shankar, who not only has her necklace, which was bought from Raju, and plans to ensure that she is returned home. Kamini escapes again, only to run into Raju, who she now finds in the company of a woman named Roma and a child. Alone, and nowhere to turn to for help, Kamini must now decide whether to take her life or surrender to her uncle's wishes.

Sushma believes that she is too young to get married, but her father, Lalla Banarsilal insists, and she runs away. Her adventures take her to a lonely wealthy widower with a cute daughter named Guddi; a drunken lout in a brothel; Dr. Kruparam, a psychiatrist, who admits her in his mental hospital; a dreaded bandit who has killed his tormentor, cut him into pieces and fed them to birds, and who still on a killing spree; Pandit Gorakhnath who lives a double life - as a priest and as a smuggler; a leper Dhanraj, who once was a very wealthy man, but is now shunned by everyone; a transvestite stage actor; and a hunter who saves Sushma's life by shooting dead a man-eating lion. As things spiral out of control for Sushma, there is yet one more male she has to meet, and it is this meeting that will change her life even more.

Raja Thakur (Sunil Dutt) is an outlaw who fights oppression and corruption in his own unique way. This Robin Hood like figure is a feared and respected figure among the villagers and when he attends a dance performance given by the famous dancer Janiya (Rekha), he finds himself attracted to her. He shows his feelings openly but this proves to be a hindrance to Janiya - people now consider her to be the exclusive property of the outlaw and fear to ask her to perform for them. A rival gang kidnaps Janiya and invoke the wrath of Raja Thakur. Now Raja Thakur will have to leave the rural area, where he rules, and go into an unknown territory, to deal with unknown gangsters, and he must do so in order to keep his word.

Ajit Singh and his younger brother, Ranjeet Singh's marred childhood days forces them to form a gang of bandits. When Ranjeet meets Aasha Sinha he is attracted to her and decides to onus himself from the gang much to the displeasure of his brother and right-hand man, Saru. Ranjeet then re-locates to the city to lead a common man's life with Aasha only to find himself arrested, convicted and imprisoned. Sarju then forcibly takes over as leader of the den of bandits abducting Aasha and holding Ajit as hostages until such time Ranjeet is able to make a compromise. Ranjeet then seeks the assistance of the police but they would only help him conditionally forcing him to escape from prison to free the hostages as well as even scores with Sarju.

Prominent businessman Rai agrees to his granddaughter Asha's wish to marry boyfriend Madan, unaware that Madan is actually impersonated by thief Shankar hired by Asha; chaos ensues when real Madan returns and stakes claim on Asha's love.

The story is symbolic ,as to how marriages are being misused in India since 1938,whence even the independence of India stands threatened and that is why the movie was released in 1974.The 1947 "Tryst with Destiny",stands reverted due to men doing second marriages on the sly and previously in 1757 too the country's independence was taken away by attacking its economy,its women and its religion.Rekha plays an heiress and Navin Nischol ,the forest conservator with the tribals.The movie is of the suspense genre where Nahin Nischal is accused by various women of marrying them and leaving them in the lurch and Navin asserting his innocence.Wbat actually happened is revealed in the end.A good suspense thriller.

Ram comes from a poor family, and works as a labourer for a living. One day he comes across an old woman in distress, and decides to assist her. This old woman is dying and asks Ram to promise to look after her young and destitute daughter, Radha, and Ram does so. Eventually, Ram and Radha get married and sire a baby boy. One day the child becomes seriously ill, and Radha goes to Ram's place of employment to get him to assist the child. It is there she finds out that Ram is living a parallel life as Laxman, and is living with a woman named Lalita.

Three jailed convicts, Himmat, his brother Ajit, and Dilawar Khan break out of prison and take over the household of Editor Ashok Rai. The convicts will continue to hold the family hostage until their associate, Kamini contacts them in person.

After helping a stabbing victim to the hospital, a man begins to receive anonymous threats. The only way to save his wife and child is to unravel the mystery of the killer's identity.

Amar and Mansi live a rather peaceful and happy married life, that is, until Amar's job in an advertising agency requires him to work closely with beautiful models, which leads to some serious trouble in paradise.

Mohan is a college student and a slacker. Mohan instead takes his camera and goes for long walks amongst the wilderness. One day he comes across a mela (fair) run by gypsies, and instantly falls head over heels in love with Kamli. He takes her photograph, rides on her carousel (merry go round), and they become friends. They meet in secret every day. When Mohan asks Kamli to marry him, she tells him that she is to marry Bhairo, part of the gypsy group, but she also indicates that she loves him. Mohan and Kamli plan to run away together. Kamli accordingly packs up and waits for Mohan to show up. But Mohan does not show up, instead Bhairo shows up and takes Kamli by force back to their camp. Will Kamli ever come to know why Mohan did not come as they had planned?
