Director Colm McCarthy offers us a new version of the bogeyman and unfortunately it ends up being a rather weak proposal that fails to captivate, much less give us scares or tension.
Starring Sam Claflin and Antonia Thomas, the film's strong point is to give us a well-constructed story and the legend of this horrible being is well-exploited, but it doesn't end up being well-managed in terms of the good ideas it has in its favor. By losing a bit of intensity, we are left with a cold journey lacking in sensations, it is a bland film that never really explodes, not even when it approaches its final climax. The one who does manage to keep us attentive is Sam Claflin, who enthusiastically leads his role and allows us to get hooked at certain moments with what is happening around him.
The truth is that we are faced with a proposal that is not too terrifying, the new revision of the myth falls halfway between taking advantage of its good ideas to establish an interesting universe that it proposes, but it falls into the routine of other productions that only seek the immediate rather than giving us something else to take advantage of. Taking into account that it is a year with great titles in the horror genre, Bagman is quite out of tune with the notes of a genre that has known how to mark good records this 2024. In any case, it is a correct film that has successful moments that will end up conquering the most enthusiastic of viewers.
It could have been better, but I don't think it had many more virtues than those it ends up offering.
