Run Robot Run!

Quirky, imaginative and, at times, inspirational, Run Robot Run manages to bring all of the charm an independent film can offer, while shying away from the usual stigmas of bad acting, shoddy sets and low-quality music scores. RRR is proof positive that it doesn't have to be Hollywood to be pleasing to the eye.

The movie manages to portray a not-too-distant future, without having to go out of its way to tell us or to include flying cars. The characters, and their relationships with each other, are superbly portrayed, using usual concepts in a way that feels familiar rather than cliché.

Whether you're in the mood for a light-hearted comedy or a mild drama, this one's got something for everybody.

This is one heck of stupid movie here.

A perfectly capable guy is replaced by a robot at work. Now there's a great set-up for a psychological / ethical showdown of man vs. machine a la A.I. and the like, right? But noooo, this whole thing turns juvenile in a big hurry, turning this movie into a bad exercise of humor. The actors here seem like they're fine, so can't blame them (well, maybe we can - but a job's a job, right?) No, I put the sole blame for this turkey on the writer / director, Daniel O'Connor. I'm sorry Dan, you failed. The comedy is one short up from three stooges, and hammered shut by a LAME LAME ending which I won't spoil for you of course, because it's too obvious. The most hilarious part of the movie for me was actually, was when at the end, I was like "Gee, I wonder if we're going to get goofy end credits", and WHAM I was right!

Avoid!

After reading the reviews, I wasn't expecting much, although I have seen some of the actors, especially Chris Gibbs and Sandy Jobin-Bevens, in live stage performances (scripted theatre and improv) and have thoroughly enjoyed them. I have to say, I was pleasantly surprised. I was taken more by the charm of the characters than the comedic material. Chris Gibb's in-person and his on-screen persona and his dry sense of humour reminds me of a young Bob Newhart. Obviously low-budget, but a polished production. I first heard about this movie during the 2005 Toronto Fringe Theatre Festival, where Chris Gibbs was appearing in a show and, appreciating his kind of humour, always looked forward to having a look at the film. I'm glad I finally got to see it!.

I saw this movie recently at the White Sands Film Festival and really enjoyed it. The award it won there for Best Comedy/Drama was well deserved. While the directing, editing and music were all first rate, what I was most impressed by were the characters and comedy. I don't care what the budget was...the characters were great and the comedy was fresh and clever, consistent throughout. The acting was surprisingly good too, especially the two male leads. At first the robot guy seemed dispensable as a non-human, but then I strangely found myself pulling for him. If you like smart comedy rooted in original, believable characters, check this movie out.

This is a playfully funny movie about an office worker, Kent, and his nemesis the robot, Adam. The robot is all-too-human in appearance, but has an edge: he is smart, stylish and funny! Kent's affections for Alison, a coworker, are immediately threatened. He enlists the help of his programmer friend Garth to expose Adam as a cold bucket of bolts. Their efforts become increasingly desperate until Kent realizes that he can succeed only by doing the one thing humans find most challenging: change.

Run Robot Run is witty, intelligent and funny. It lightheartedly shows us what it is to be human and how easy it can be to lose touch with ourselves.
