Despite a laughably low budget, I managed to pull off a movie that actually is entertaining. In fact, when I hung out with Juvenile, he and his homies said they liked the movie. So I guess I did my job pretty well after all. Paul Wynne, Writer/Director/Producer '2Gs & a Key'.
Ever had one of those nights when you couldn't sleep and just turned on the tube to see what was on? That is how I ran across this tripe. For myself, I would have been better served tossing and turning for the 97 minutes I wasted with this film.
In its attempt to "be real" this movie's characters come off as such gangsta stereotypes that the story should have been the premise for a Wayans brothers movie. The dialog? Please! It sounded like a white man was trying too hard to write this film.
The editing was horrible. One of my "favorite" scenes involved a car chase down a bunch of narrow alleys. Cut to the characters being chased, though, and they are driving through a park complete with baseball fields in the background.
When any of our "homies" get shot in this film, he bleeds miraculously through clothes that have no holes, which is more than I can say for the plot of this predictable load of....baking soda.
Indie films can be great even if they are low on budget and effects, but they still need to have some cinematic integrity. If I could have given it a 0, I would. If you watch it, I hope it is on cable, because even the cheapest rental would be too much to pay. Actually, 97 minutes was too much to pay...

So there I am flipping through all the channels when I see Conroe Brooks. Conroe Brooks?? Hey I know that I guy, I went to highschool with his sister. And wow the movie just came on. I watched the whole thing start to finish, and let me tell you at 4 am the movie has gotta be good, for me to pass up sleep that is. The acting was superb. I enjoyed the characters and the little idiosyncrasies each one had. Two things about the movie I didn't like though: one was the editing. I felt that editing was a bit choppy. Just a bit. Not alot, not enough to say, "Dammit what is up with choppy editing crap! Dammit!" but, enough to say, "Hmm...why did the director choose to insert that shot here," and so on, which you should not be asking during a movie in the first place. Your suppose to be thinking about the movie. And the other thing was (u thought I forgot) was the script. I felt the script was good but a bit contrived. Other than that it was a good movie and I enjoyed the amateurish film quality about it. If you are into low-budget indy films than you will like it alot. If your into flashy, run and gun, crazy, blow your house up and kill your pets, while dancing with an uzi, type of shindig, this one has its moments. And if your (shut up Jonathan, sorry sometimes I ramble) Anyways good movie!! And good job Conroe, congrats!
I really like this movie and have been searching to buy it again. Loaned a recording of it to a friend and never got it back. Have been wanting to watch it and have been searching for years now. Pleeeeeaase send me any helpful information as where I can get this. Definitely, a keeper!! Can you send any, I mean ANY, website information as to where I can purchase this movie, VHS or DVD. I've even told others about it, and because it's not a blockbuster, no one's heard too much about it. Can you also tell me if you know of any other movies with same kind of feel? It totally caught me by surprise, and I do watch movies like that regularly on weekends or weekdays, no matter. Thanks so much! My eyes lit up when I saw the results of finding it!
Yes, As one might assume from the title 2 G's and a key is a modern classic. Not only is the acting superb. Aaron Spears who plays "Sad Dog" the drug dealer is incredible gives a feeling like he really does sell crack to kids. He is eviler than Jack Nickolson in the Shining and Ten times the actor as Jack ever was or could be. The screenplay was clever and was full of twists. It potrated the crack ridden' streets of the ghetto beautifully with incredible cinamotgraphy.
IT worked on so many diffrent levels. On one you have the powerful adn moving story of a drug dealer and his hatred for life. on another level you see the influence of Trufo' and Niche. The movie takes surrelelism to the next step. IT is as if Salavador Dali himself painted this story, it is like magic. This movie is incredible it is up there with Commando, and Scream 3. SO next time you are thinking about renting "Gone with the wind" or "Citizen Kane" Instead of wasting your money on that outdated crap take out the modern classic " 2 g's and akey"
