And by the end, I must say, I was amazed.
The storyline is quite weird (but then again, this is Troma and/or Full Moon) but very cool. An army soldier is taking a bin of radioactive material through the redneck south, and loses it while driving. A redneck takes it, forcing the army guy to leave without it, and is then robbed of it by more hicks making a new alcohol still. Yet, the infamous Ellie May--if you've seen this, you know who it is--drops the barrel and the radioactive stuff goes into their still. They leave it, though, and are impressed with the new stuff they've made.
Meanwhile, a group of campers are out looking for their campsite ("And it has a pond to piss in!"), unaware of the carnage about to unfold.
I think we can all guess what happens next. The alcohol is distributed around town, turning everyone who drinks it into a flesheating zombie. No one's safe--especially not the campers, who find themselves attacked and killed off with no mercy, all leading up to the bloody climax.
This is truly a great movie. Especially for big fans of zombies and "Texas Chainsaw Massacre." (Like I am.) Fans of TCM are sure to notice the great spoofing, even in the end, with the gory showdown at the house between Lisa and the zombie family.
For anyone looking for a fun horror movie, this is it. It has plenty of gore, plenty of comedy, and plenty of fun for anyone. But if you're looking for the next "Silence of the Lambs," avoid this film at all costs. You will hate it. But anyone else, you'll love this like I do.
Appalling acting, Ludicrous dialogue, Poor production values, Thin plot, Outrageous effects, Copious nudity.
And nine time out of ten, you'll also find gore galore.
For what it is (a Full Moon film, distributed by Troma, Inc.), Redneck Zombies is pure gold. When I first watched it, I kicked back on my couch, cracked open a bottle of fine Belgian ale, and laughed all the way through. This movie is SUPPOSED to be cheesy...it's supposed to be bad...it's supposed to be stupid and cheap and lame. That is its purpose. Deal with it, or don't watch.
There's plenty here for fans of the horror genre (including some hilarious Texas Chainsaw Massacre parody scenes), and (of course) fans of Full Moon and/or Troma won't be disappointed. My personal favorite scene involves the genuinely creepy Tobacco Man. To this day, at work or in social gatherings, I'll occasionally pull out the line "Dark times is comin'." And when everyone looks at me like I've just vomited human excrement onto the rug, I know deep down that I am the coolest person in the room. But I digress.
At any rate, if you're a Troma fan like me, definitely give this one a watch. It's way up there with the original Toxie and Class of Nuke 'Em High. And don't let these negative reviewers steer you wrong. They wouldn't know CLASSIC cult horror comedy cheese if it was gnawing on their small intestine.
On a strange note, I've rented this film twice, at two different flats, & watched it with two different flatmates. They both fell asleep half way through. Inexplicable.
