6/10
Watchable divorce melodrama with restrained yet emotional performances by Azmi and Khanna being the highlight of the film. Many of their dialogues have the ring of truth. However the rest of the film with the exception of Sriram Lagoo feels ordinary with the usual cinematic clichés. Long but never boring.
There are scenes which are realistic and charming, but there are such which are overdone and unconvincing. The character of Urmila Bhatt is an extremely irritating one, and she is plastic with her cliché dialogues and victimising attitude.
Otherwise the film is nice. Rajesh Khanna and Shabana Azmi act well and some of their scenes together are pure magic. Azmi in particular is interesting; considering the fact that she is known for her realistic films, it's a pleasant paradox watching her in an unrestrained melodramatic mainstream film (she did many such films, but it's still engaging).
The music is good, the cinematography is fine, the locations and the urban settings are well chosen.
Watch it, but be prepared to get mixed feelings about it.
In this movie arun kumar and nima are both in love with each other and get married.due to some mistake arun kumar lost his fortune and his father as well and begin living poor life.In this time also arun kumar duly does his role as good husband for his wife and a good son, brother for his step mother, sisters and brother by working hard.A rift begin between arun ,nima and her step mother because of their rude neighbor.one days nima's brother sees him with another woman and thinking he is cheating on her leaves him without thinking. Then for custody of the son nima takes arun to court and gets custody.even in this time also arun tries to reconcile with her but due to her arrogance, pride, anger, stubborn she doesn't care eventhough she still loves him. What happens after this is shown in movie. The main problem in this movie is nima being dependent upon her family even after being separated from her husband. She could have done some work for living but she is shown to be dependent upon her father, brother for living and raising her son. The story seems a bit unrealistic but it succeed in conveying the message. My rating is 8 out of 10.
The message is, you should give priority your own family rather than your parents family. Rajesh Khanna loves Shabana Azmi whereas he also loves his father family and his siblings more than his wife. On the other hand, Shabana Azmi sacrifices her husbands family and her earnings for her father family and her younger brother. Both departed.

- QuizShabana Azmi later regretted doing the role - which was regressive by her standards - that of a wife who after suspecting her husband and separating from him ends up being a passive sufferer in her brother's house rather than become an independent bread winner. Also though both husband and wife are equally to blame for the rift - the husband character came across as the righteous one and the wife was 'blamed' and made to apologize in the climax. Patriarchical directorial values of those times. Shabana stated she only signed the film due to the director saying he would shelve the entire film if she did not agree to do the film.
