I am no movie maniac, but this is one of the rare films I have seen more than four or five times and I keep finding new amazingly funny things in it. I think it gives many hints of the true Neapolitan essence. Wonderful job of Troisi as writer, director and actor (and obviously much better than "Il Postino'). The supporting actors are also fantastic, especially Lello Arena, but also Giuliana De Sio and Vincenzo's (Troisi's) mother. I am not sure there is an English subtitled version, and the original version may be difficult to understand if you are not used to Neapolitan accent (and dialect or at least expressions) but if you have a chance, go for it, it is surely worth while. A truly excellent film.
A film that for convenience I define as a love story, but where this word includes many others: communication breakdown between sexes, friendship, and family. Perhaps more than a love story, it's a film about life and its torments. Troisi is a master of this genre, because he puts himself mostly into it, as well as Naples and its quirks. This shouldn't scare anyone, as I believe his language is understandable in every corner of the world. A positive note also for Giuliana De Sio, who with her acting supports well what Troisi wanted to convey. In short, a beautiful film that speaks to us about love in a poetic and gentle way.
🎬 My favourite scene
My favourite scene is at the beginning of the movie, when Alfredo, Vincenzo's brother, arrives home and just at that moment the phone rings. Vincenzo answers, and when he says that Alfredo is there, he gets up and says: "I'm coming now... and then tell him I'm not there", and then finally go. Shortly after, Vincenzo's mother and sister reproach him for not having "covered" Alfredo, and he replies, exasperated:
"Oh well, next time to answer the phone send Leonardo da Vinci."
It's a simple but perfect scene: it lightly tells the family dynamics, the daily frustrations, the absurdity of small domestic dramas. A comedy that comes from reality and that Troisi knew how to make unique
👍 Do I recommend it?
Yes, I recommend it, but not to everyone without distinction. It is a film that you really appreciate only if you have a more mature look, or if you are willing to enter the slow rhythms and silences that tell much more than words.
Those looking for a light comedy risk getting bored or not getting all the way. But those who want to listen, observe and perhaps recognise themselves in certain fragilities, will find a sincere, intelligent and profound film.
Absolutely promoted, and in my opinion it is at the levels of Restancio from three, although very different in tone and atmosphere.
