Disney's first all-live-action movie. Walt Disney started the project when postwar restrictions stopped him from transferring profits from his cartoons out of the United Kingdom. Rather than set up a new animation studio, he used the profits and existing facilities to produce a conventional film. The movie was filmed in England, not in the West Indies, using Disney's frozen U.K. profits.

Throughout the film the frizzens were often open and the flashpans exposed on the supposed flintlock pistols and muskets, but the guns fired anyway. These were obviously stage guns, but as a factual point the frizzen must be closed on the pan and there must be a poof of smoke before a flintlock gun will fire.

The 1975 re-release had some violent scenes removed in order to qualify for a G rating. Early VHS releases use this version. These scenes were restored in the 1992 video release, and was re-rated PG (yet early copies of the 1992 VHS still sported a G rating on the packaging).

Let's face it, this is the best version.

Sure, it had its shortcomings, and it wasn't as dark as it could have been, but this is certainly the best version of a book that has been retold time after time. As a child, this was one of my favorite books, and I always felt this was one of the best, if not the best adaptation of the book. Maybe someday someone will make a better version, but until then, my vote goes to this one.
