British actor, the son of theatrical parents. While working on stage in the U.S. in 1934, he scored the part of the adult David Copperfield in the 1934 MGM film. Though he had leading man roles on both sides of the Atlantic, he never quite made the grade as a star. However, during World War II he rose to the rank of major and was awarded the U.S. Legion of Merit for liaison work in France.
