This was in many ways the movie that made Per Høst the legend he is in Norwegian movie-history today. Per Høst was originally an educated zoologist, but found an interest in film-making early on. He was a mentor to great names as Thor Heyerdahl (the discoverer of the Easter Island) and Sir David Attenborough. "Same Jakki" had a great significance in making the Samis accepted in the Norwegian society. As many other native cultures all over the world, the Samis were discriminated against by both the Norwegian government and the population in general. With "Same Jakki", their culture were made known to the rest of the western world, and the movie was even promoted at the Cannes Film Festival where Per and some of the Sami actors built a lavvo (a tent, somewhat similar to the native American tipi) down on the beach. I would really recommend "Same Jakki" to anyone interested in minority cultures. The nature footage is fantastic, the intimacy and honesty in everything from the dialog to the story, and the pure historic significance of this movie makes it worth seeing!
