Avis à la une
As a child growing up in Canada in the late 90s, 'My Hometown' was one of the serious shows syndicated on YTV. It was through this show where a lot of my first dramatic media memories started. I still remember certain moments vividly from watching it when I was three and four years old.
Jay Baruchel is the star of the show. It was also one of his very first acting gigs, as well as his most overlooked. So overlooked, in fact, my own random memory recalls triggered my interest to look back on this. I have downloaded all of the episodes from Youtube and have seen them all with a much more mature understanding than twenty years earlier.
'My Hometown' is centred around Baruchel's character named Thomas Thompson (yeah, that's his name). His family has lived in a teeny-tiny town outside of Montreal called Maplewood for generations. It consists of his handyman father, homemaking (I think) mother, little sister Tracey, older brother Dennis, and cousin Alex. Dennis appears in just a few episodes, with his character getting an academic scholarship to McGill University. Alex's mother died at birth and father moves too often, so the Thompsons eventually adopt him.
The best part of the show is Thomas' bond with his two best friends, Lisa and Simon. The friendship these three share is beyond enchanting. We know that no matter what, they would die for each other. They have a few other good friends that join them, but nothing beats these three.
Maplewood is a tiny town that reminds me a lot of where I grew up. I can see my own memories in some places. But the setting is also very beautiful and highly immersive; it takes the viewer straight into this rural community. And this is a town where everyone knows everyone, so the writing brings each character we meet to life. We feel like we are watching these people in real situations. Nothing is copped out.
The acting and characterizations are the first first-rate ones I had ever seen in a show and still remain one of the highest. Take my advice and watch this show as soon as possible!

My Hometown was a nice little show. I thought it was around for more than one season, but whatever! It's about a few teen friends who live in a little Canadian town. Well acted, and it seemed so sincere and innocent...they don't show the repeats anymore...
Personally I think this show could have the potential to be good except for the poor acting. The script is pretty corny but, when things like that happen you really have to play it up. Although, I do think that Jamie Elman is a good actor.
I loved the show when I was younger. I'm sure now it wouldn't be as good, but it was a great Canadian show that had an interesting plot and actual talented actors. The show ran along side shows such as "wish bone" and "Popular Mechanics for Kids". The show was intended for a younger audience but still held it's own. I'm disappointed that they canceled it after the first season and am even more upset that they don't play the re-runs, especially seeing as they still play re-runs of "Ned's Newt". But all in all it was a great show it had it's touching moment and it's funny times and I'm sad to see that it's gone for good. I hope this comment helped anyone wondering about the show.
I used to watch this as a kid in South Africa, it aired weekdays from 15.30 till 16.00. I never missed an episode and remember how I wished that I had friends like these three. Looking at the show with nostaglic glasses now, 23 years later, its still a wholesome, feel good show. We need more shows like this for today's youth. Yeah its corny, badly acted and predictable but its also very much lovable. Give it chance, you wont be disappointed.

- AnecdotesThomas' full name is Thomas John Thompson.
- GaffesActually there is no error in geography here. The setting of the town is in the Eastern Townships of Quebec, which was heavily settled by English-speaking refugees (the Loyalists fleeing the American Revolution). Many of the towns have English names (Drummondville, Lennoxville, Stanhope). The show was filmed in the town of Coaticook very close to the US border.
- Crédits fousJamie Elman appears in nine episodes, but appears in the opening credits for the first twenty-seven episodes.
