Kurt Georg Kiesinger, who was elected as chancellor of West Germany in
1967, had been a high-ranking Nazi. Beate and her husband decided
Kiesinger would not be re-elected. Beate climbed onto the podium of
Berlin's Congress Hall, slapped Kiesinger on the face, and shouted
"Nazi! Nazi!" She was arrested and almost shot by security forces. She
used the publicity to expose his Nazi past. Kiesinger lost the 1969
election.
