The costumes that she wore in the Original Broadway Company of RENT were from her own closet. The clothes inspired a line of RENT-related clothes in Bloomingdales (1996). Still lives in the New York apartment that she has been in since before the RENT phenomenon.

We didn't want to go to Broadway to become Broadway stars; we went to kick the motherf***in' doors of Broadway open, because it's old-school and it's stodgy. We were invited there, and that was cool.
