Suparhearo: A True Tail by Chance

Buckle up chum, light up a stogie, tailgate your perp, hide in plain sight. There are few like Montgomery Von Chance III, and even fewer like our titular Suparhearo. He is Michael Scott fully embracing his Michael Scarn persona, the ultimate covert operative. The buddy cop genre works best with a partner, but something tells me our Suparhearo could find a way to improvise. "You gotta look through the cracks" if you want to find gems like these where the antihero archetype is in full swing, unapologetically reminding us why we collectively never dreamed of becoming tax attorneys. I like stories about antiheroes. This guy sounds like...a special case. Movie makes him an interesting character. Sean McCarthy does a good job playing an absolute wreck of a person as well as just delusional. I like the whole mockumentary format. I also like how McCarthy is trying to see a human side to this character even when the character himself seems to have just an inflated impression of himself that he can't see some of the self-damage that he inflicts by continuing to make the wrong choice. It is always bold to have a main character that you actively root against, yet you also feel sympathy for him at the same time.

This film takes the idea of a what it means to be a super hero and turns it on its head in this hilarious satire. Everyone grows up wanting to be a super hero just like the ones we saw in cartoons, except this individual never really grew out of that. It makes the viewer question what is so attractive about being a super hero and what should one strive to be like at all. The main character, Montgomery Von Chance III, is hilarious, unreliable, and unfortunately relatable. The more you find out about the guy, the more you question how he's even made it this far in life. The directing and editing style also makes this film a very fun watch.

It's always a treat when a writer director is able to poke fun at themselves. Going out on a limb and volunteering to be the brunt of the joke isn't something everybody can do. Others have much too big an ego to have any self-satirizing humor. The themes being satirized in this short film are the macho ego and the need to always be a "hero" and make excuses for one's own short comings. In a way the main character represents an unchecked ego. An ego that wants to dream big and imagine itself as this grand respected hero. But nevertheless, they are simply living in a fantasy world. This showcases the need for fantasy to escape harsh reality.

I enjoyed this films approach to the main character. Funny and unique. I recommend the watch especially with all the superhero movies we have seen to date. This is a treat and a breath of fresh air. I had to give this movie three watches to grasp what was happening due to laughing the entire first two watches. McCarthy's films seem to all have something in common they are enjoyable, fun and make you think about yourself. Having to look within ones ownself to sometime find the answers that have been all around the entire time. Again I look forward to experiencing more films and shows done by McCarthy.
