This is a very depressing movie the music is depressing, the story is deoressing, even the gloomy grayness of the film overall makes it even more depressing,, but it isn't incoherent or as badly written as others are saying. There is actually a really good reason for the odd narrative structure, and it all ties together, if you are paying attention. If you have a short attention span, or are unwilling to take the time to sit down and watch this, do not bother. While the twist and turns may not be entirely unpredictable, they make sense and are not a series of random events, to say more than that will ruin the film.
This is a well-made low-budget drama with sci-fi elements about trauma and how people cope with the bad things going on in their life. The acting is well-done, the cinematography is good, though some may dislike the intentionally unsteady camera work in the moments between Ethan and his father, and some of the more dramatic moments, but it nis clearly a stylistic choice, as there are plenty of moments where the camera is steady. The lighting is well-done, it isn't afraid to use darkness, and the usage of closeups is a good choice that makes things feel more claustrophobic. The music is well-done, though at times, slightly over-melodramatic. The acting is good on the whole and the acting playing Ethan does a decent job of playing a fairly difficult role. Overall, the script just might be too obtuse for it's own good, seems to be missing a few details, and will go over the average movie goers head, but this is not a 3 star movie, not even close, it deserves a 6 at least.
Not a fantastic movie, but deliberately made, and the direction is very solid, there is no reason whatsoever for the hate it has gotten. It's just probably a little to obtuse, out of order, depressing, and melodramatic for most.
