Molly i världen

This movie wasn't a waste of time since it really helped me understand why good movies are good. This piece of work is the worst piece of creation I've ever witnessed. Bad acting, zero story, lousy filming.... the list can go on. The only thing that's good is the bright colours, but they just make me sick in this movie.

How any sober human being can blend 3D animated guinea pigs with real human actors is for me a mystery. Even more cryptic is it when the same guinea pigs tells the girl deep words of wisdom....

From my point-of-view the end doesn't compensate for the terrible preceding story. I'm just stunned that such a project is narrated by the great classic Swedish actor Sven Wollter!

Extracting something extraordinary from the ordinary can be done in a number of ways and with varying results. In terms of film, the difference between success and failure often lies in the filmmakers ability to find the right balance between familiarity and peculiarity. In his intriguing first feature "Molly in the World", filmmaker Henrik Pilerud manages to achieve a satisfying tension between these two states of perception.

This is an independent film and Pilerud harnesses meagre means to great effect. Although the soundtrack may at first feel intrusive, the palette brazenly bold and the sudden introduction of a blend between live action and animation quirkily unexpected, these features retain enough subtlety to help give this story a unique and engaging edge. Veteran actor and Swedish national treasure Sven Wollter's dulcet narration sets the esoteric tone and the charismatic Yohanna Idha impresses as Molly in her feature debut. This can indeed be seen as visionary casting by Pilerud because Idha went on to become an award winning actress in her native Sweden.

Molly lives in a seemingly timeless and geographically unspecified world where an unorthodox blend of costumes, props and locations both captivate and alienate. She suffers doubts and frustrations familiar to us all. But when her fears and misgivings begin to manifest themselves, then nothing in Molly's world progresses in a foreseeable manner. Following this endearingly vulnerable and confused character through her myriad of mainly self-imposed conundrums becomes an experience as unsettling as it is compelling.

Most films fit into a specific genre, but you will not be able to pigeonhole or categorize Pilerud's quirky pièce de résistance. Neither will you remain unmoved by it. Molly in the World makes a deep and lasting impression.

Molly is trying to find her place in the world by having a daytime job, trying to get along with colleges and family. Something a lot of people can relate to. But something not everyone might relate to, or even understand if explained, is the feeling of doubting your own senses. Did I mades this? Is this my own feeling or something made up? Can I truly trust my self and my decisions? And this movie does a great job to visualize it with charming (some even recognizable) characters.

It's clearly a movie made on restricted resources, but it still tells a story about finding your own happiness, how easy it is to take them for granted, and in worst case where you might end up when you keep searching for something that already surrounds you..

My two favorit things about this movie: I love the fact that it has a smaller musical number! The nostalgic 90's costume wardrobe and rave inspired make-up Molly has thru out the movie.

The tempo is quiet slow and some scenes might feel a bit stretched out, but it gives you time to take in and truly understand the state of mind Molly is in compared to the world she lives in. Prepare to be more of a active watcher to get a hang of the story, I feel it's a movie that gets more interesting after a second watch.
