The 34th Annual Academy Awards

Joan Crawford accepted the Oscar for Best Actress on behalf of Anne Bancroft, who won for "The Miracle Worker" but did not attend the ceremony. Crawford campaigned against Bette Davis to ensure Davis did not win, who was a nominee for "Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?" and Crawford's co-star in the film. Crawford also offered to accept the award for any of the East Coast nominees if they were unable to attend the West Coast ceremony.
