I got a videotape of this feature, and I wonder why it isn't a cult favourite, because the concept is great and the finished film is excellent.
I know that HTH probably wasn't a big-budget picture, but it doesn't show because the production design and effects are great. The Hellcop himself is an excellent villain, truly menacing. Patrick Bergin is pretty good as the Devil. There are some cute jokes, such as the road to Hell literally being paved with good intentions and Hitler, Cleopatra and Atilla The Hun hanging out at a restaurant in the underworld.
THE STRAIGHT STORY's Richard Farnsworth is good in a cameo as the wise old man who knows of the Highway to Hell. Kristy Swanson and the guy playing Charlie are okay in their roles. There are also two cool cars: the Hellcop's squad car and the '48 Ford Farnsworth gives Charlie for the journey to Hell. I would really like to see this film released on DVD someday, with commentary. I give it a confident thumbs-up.
Look out for cameos from Ben and Jerry Stiller and rocker babe Lita Ford. Lita has one of the best lines in the flick.

If you love quirky movies this one is a gem. Basically the story plays out like this ... Charlie, played by actor Chad Lowe and Rachel, played by actress Kristy Swanson. Are young lovers who decide to elope in Nevada ... Bad mistake. They decide to take a seldom used highway where they meet a old gas station owner played by veteran actor Richard Farnsworth. It is at the gas station where Mr Farnsworth warns the young lovers not to drive a certain highway while tired. Of coarse they don't listen to him and procede to take the deserted highway where Rachel is nabbed by a person known as " Hell Cop " He promptly takes Rachel to hell to become satans ( Patrick Bergin ) bride. Charlie must overcome his fear and rescue his love from hell. Hell turns out to be both a terrible and humorous place with interesting characters. I found the story well written and directed. If your looking for a fun and unique movie to watch I highly recommend this now out of print movie.
Highway to hell is by far one of the funniest horror movies of all time. There are tons of hilarious lines and scenes throughout the entire film. As a person who enjoys over-the-top horror movies, this is my favorite. This one beats all of the other comedy/horror movies I have seen to date: Jack Frost, Head of the Family, Python, Raptor, Night of the Demons, Hell's Highway (not to be confused with this one, Highway to Hell), Dead Alive, Demons, Terror Toons. While these movies do have their moments, Highway to Hell is consistent and overall a better movie. I highly recommend this movie to any fan of the comedy/horror genre.
As the one who did the main title and effects for Highway to Hell I can only answer this way...no budget...some cheesiness intentional. I must say I had a lot of fun trying to build all these effects with a $1.98 (almost). Didn't think it would turn out as funny and cultish as it did. Patrick Bergin, a really fine actor, is worth watching. Not easy acting under 40lbs. of make up.
Highway To Hell is an instant cult classic about a hidden road to Hell, where Hellcop snatches up virgins for Old Nick. This is a satirical horror comedy that doesn't take itself too seriously. This stars Kristy Swanson (the original Buffy) in this ridiculous, but highly entertaining film. There are some notable cameos from Lita Ford, Gilbert Godfrey, Ben Stiller and most of The Stiller family. I have fond memories when I first saw this on HBO and I have a copy on VHS somewhere. Highway To Hell is a cool flick and good cheesy fun.

- AnecdotesThe film features 4 members of the Stiller Family: Jerry Stiller, his wife Anne Meara, Ben Stiller, and Ben's sister, Amy Stiller, who does bit parts in most of Ben's films.
- GaffesWhen Charlie is driving to the Road to Nowhere, at first he's wearing a white tank top, then for the rest of the driving scene he's wearing an olive green t-shirt. When he arrives at the entrance and jumps out of the car, he's wearing the white tank top again.

Rachel: Haven't you ever been in love?
Satan: I am darkness made visible. I am the Prince of Princes. I once basked in the light of God's love.
Rachel: Then you must know how we feel.
Satan: I know how *everyone* feels... and it is not love. It is fear... and vanity.
