Wilkinson is shot by someone who tried to break into his house and later he's finished off in the hospital. Someone clearly did not want this man to live. But there's more to this story than a bad love affair. There's a rumored fortune in diamonds from the old country and a lot of people are looking for them.
As mysteries go this one isn't all that hard to figure out. But in an unusual twist to the Hallmark mystery formula, the amateur detective is a guy who assist the professional woman, in this case SFPD homicide detective Brooke Burns. Neal and Burns have a nice chemistry though in this case another police detective is moving in on Burns.
Nice chemistry, but no real mystery.
We've got the hard-nosed lady detective with the supermodel looks and the "charming wise-cracking consultant" who is ever-present, completely out of his element and always bickering with her while trying to get in her pants. On Castle, he always brings her a large coffee...even buys an expensive espresso machine for the 12th Precinct. Here he brings her a small. (Like I said...cheaper.)
Throw in the two goofball caucasian and ethnic "utility detectives" (complete with "exploding fist bumps"), activities focussing on the "murder board," the (also appropriately ethnic) female "coroner buddy" and the occasional appearance by a female tough-gal captain and there you have it. Here, however, it's the detective who's the one with the live-in mother and teenage daughter, not the pseudo-Castle.
It's Nathan Fillion's Castle with a food theme. I'm just trying to determine when Hollywood completely lost its creativity.

- AnecdotesThe scene showing China Town is Victoria's 2 block long China Town.
- GaffesGun handling in movies and real life is very important. One of the four golden rules of gun safety is to always keep your finger off of the trigger until you are ready to fire. In this case you can clearly see that Maggie has her finger on the trigger on two occasions. Once when confronting the passport forger and the second when she retrieves her gun from Claudia. Another of the four golden rules is to know your target and what is behind the target. In this case Maggie is clearly shooting toward her colleagues and could have killed either one. Both of these actions are serious violations of gun safety and should not be depicted in a movie, even if it is just make believe.

Henry: So, are we going to talk about what happened?
Maggie: About the fact that you kissed me? I'd rather not right now.
Henry: How about the fact that you kissed me back?
Maggie: I wouldn't say I kissed you back.
Henry: Oh really, what would you call it?
Maggie: Well, you came at me out of the blue.
Henry: Oh, that was hardly out of the blue, you were waiting for me to kiss you.
Maggie: What? I was on a case, the last thing I was thinking about was anybody kissing me.
Henry: Ah, well, you could have fooled me.
[pause]
Henry: Wait, did it actually just happen?
Maggie: What?
Henry: Did I actually get the last word?
Maggie: No.
Henry: I did, I just got the last word.
Maggie: No, you didn't get the
Henry: [interrupts Maggie] Yeah, I kinda did, I had you stumped, you were just walking there not saying anything
Maggie: [kisses Henry] You didn't have me stumped.
Henry: Ok, you win that one.
