Bud Abbott and Lou Costello Meet the Monsters

This film will impact you differently depending on if you are familiar with or like Abbott and Costello. Given that many younger people DON'T know who they were, the film has rather limited appeal.

The short is like ABBOTT AND COSTELLO MEET FRANKENSTEIN and their old familiar "Who's on First" routine rolled into one. As far as the voice impressions go, they aren't bad at all--particularly the guy who imitated Costello (Lou Sciara). The animation is okay, but far from professional quality--sort of like something that was made with flash or some other simple program. It's a shame really, as I would actually love to see a live action version of what this skit was about--provided Sciara and Palmer ("Abbott") can approximate the duo in a live film.

I'd like to see more--but in the meantime, keep working on those animation skills--a little smoother and more well-crafted will definitely draw in more fans of classic comedy (you know, old farts like me).

No, this isn't a long-lost movie but instead an animated spoof that has the comedy duo going against Frankenstein's monster but first they need an argument. This short starts off with Abbott telling Costello that they found the "bride" now they must find Hyde yet the dimwitted Costello thinks he should "hide" instead. For the next two-minutes we get a spoof of the "Who's on First" gag but with "Hyde" and "hide" making for the laughs. This short just runs a few minutes and while it's not Oscar-worthy material, it's still pleasant enough and I think fans of the comedy duo will find it charming as long as they don't take it too serious. I thought the film certainly had its heart in the right place and there's no question that this was meant to pay respect to the duo. I actually thought the joke of Hyde and hide was pretty funny and delivery nicely by the voices of Gil Palmer and Lou Sciara. The animation is pretty good as well and I also enjoyed the look of the monster who shows up at the end.

I don't think this would be so bad if it weren't so predictable. The animation attempt on the film was there, but with only four minutes to present (of which 1:08 was saved for credits at the end), made this a film short that goes quicker than it's taking me to write this review. Maybe someone a little older than me can find some humor in it, but it definitely was not my cup of tea, so to speak. But the other thing I found familiar was the voice inflection displayed by Gil palmer as the voice of Bud Abbott.
