She learned to play football (soccer) in the Hague alongside her twin brother, because at that time there were no girls-only teams. She was called up by the Netherlands for the first time when she was 16, and later went to the US for a year to study and play football at the University of North Carolina (UNC). She combined her playing career with teaching phys ed, and started coaching when she retired from playing.
