Almodovar is hands down my favourite director. Whenever there's a new offering from him, I jump at the opportunity to watch it.
This is his first feature film in English.
I love Julianne Moore and I'm neutral about Swinton as I haven't seen her in many movies, but was keen to change that.
This movie has a premise that interests me, features women of a certain age - then why was I so disenchanted with it? The acting, especially from Swinton, was so wooden, I was astounded. She was pretty bad even when playing her daughter. Ultimately, the dialogues were so overdone, unnatural, I was incredulous.
One flashback from Swinton's character time as a war corresponded in Iraq added nothing of consequence or relevance to the story.
John Turtorro's character - an author/speaker about climate change and the collapse - his presence was such an obvious tool for delivering these truths, even though I don't object to those facts, it was just too on the nose for me.
Sure, visually, there were many beautiful elements, from outfits to apartments and an over-the-top interesting but too big house - but in some weird way, they distracted from the story/message.
I'm perplexed that this won awards.
I am hoping that Almodovar returns to making films in Spanish.
