This is a 13 minute short film about two men Jack and Tom confined to a cheerless prison cell. It's expertly directed and with superior editing and not a frame is wasted. The cell is cramped with its double bunk bed, table, chairs, w.c. and a shelf with electric jug and television set. The overall atmosphere is suitably one of gloom as light filters in through a barred window, but the dialogue is spirited. Much of the conversation is about women and sex. Tom relates his early experiences with a Chinese prostitute, while Jack has a rather kinky association with a plastic bag filled with hot water which he cuddles pathetically and refers to as "the compassionate woman who understands him". Crazy as this may seem, one is soon convinced that the prisoners' conversation, their opposing views and attitudes and general behaviour are quite believable in their particular predicament. Not a happy film to be sure, but there is some wry humour, a little bizarre perhaps, but a slick production nicely integrated by director, actors and all concerned. Highly recommended.
Young Aussie director Stenders has once again proved himself a master at his art. This time working with a brilliant script, Stenders has been able to leverage his erudite yet relaxed style for maximum effect. In Two/Out - Stenders has clearly moved on from previous work, including his obscure documentary/tragedy about a South Korean cheobol.
