Unconvincing handling wipes out the potential of this piece with high schooler Sparks finding the mob loot and picturing a better life than his missile making dad has achieved. The run down Grand Canal community sharply filmed in black and white is the one surviving asset.
Frank and Ellie are losers who think they somehow aren't. Frankie is on probation (though they never say why) and he has a major attitude...yet Ellie inexplicably loves him. And, like most youth gone wild, the actors playing them are 27 and 22 respectively...though they are supposed to be in high school.
One night they are walking down the road when they see cops chasing some robbers. They also see the crooks toss a bag into the river as they're being chased. Two of the three robbers are killed...and the other plans on returning to retrieve the money. But Frank also plans on getting the money...and he manages to get to it first. You know it's only a matter of time until Frank and the crook are on a collision course...and Frank is dumb enough to end up on the losing end of things.
This is an odd movie...as if the writer was replaced mid-film. This is because the first half portrays Frank as a 'kid' bound for prison. Later, they inexplicably show him much more favorably...and folks in the film who hated him suddenly like him and see promise in him. This really is a problem with the plot...it doesn't know if it wants to be yet another 'youth gone wild' sort of picture or what. Plus Frank's actions in the story just don't make a lot of sense...such as when he goes to retrieve the bag. If you watch the story, you'll see what I mean.
Overall, a film which might have worked but just didn't. Mostly it's a problem with the writing though the acting isn't exactly Oscar-caliber either! It's a shame, as apart from Frank inexplicably acting 'nice' in the latter portion, the film does improve towards the end...providing some nice action. But it's a case of too little too late.
