I appreciated how it delve into "mental health"... It was depicted realistically on screen and was very much had relate-able characters. Great job by the Director
This film was thought provoking, discussion worthy and kept you on your mental toes.
Something we need in the black community in order to be able to openly discuss what we experience in private.
What goes on in the dark, does come to light. Whether we talk about it or not!
So happy to see a movie that so directly addresses the issues associated with mental illness. And I appreciate the end message of: beyond medications & therapy, it's primarily an issue of ACCEPTANCE, which is especially hard for a newly diagnosed young person to grapple with. Kudos to all involved with this project.
We need more movies to help us break the stigmatism of mental health. As this issue could touch anybody, I appreciate the eye opening depiction of how mental health affects the black community. Our youth need to know this, we all need to understand mental health.
This movie, in my opinion, does more harm than good for mental illness awareness. Pop psychology references, unrealistic doctor-patient relationships, and stereotypical portrayal of a person with mental illness shows that there was not much research done. This was a "made-for-TV" drama with a plot centered around an ignorant portrayal of mental illness, yet is being marketed as an awareness film.
As I said, in my opinion this movie misinforms it's audience and does more harm than good. I was alarmed at the number of "mmhmm"s and "aha"s I heard in the audience. No one should be "learning" anything from this movie, and the writer, director should have educated herself before making this movie.
On the technical side, the audio for the movie was absolutely amateurish, both in quality and also in how it relates to the plot. Body mics were used and it was almost cringy how bad the audio was as characters hugged or unwrapped sweetener packets or talked on the phone. Did no one tell the filmmakers it was bad before they released it?
The writing was also amateurish and awkward. Several repeated moments of dialogue. There were two specific conversations where the lines of dialogue were absolutely redundant. I could literally "hear" the bad, unedited writing as the actors were doing their thing.
On the plus side (earning the 2 stars), the actors did really do a good job. The terrible script definitely took even them out of the moment a few times, but they absolutely did the best they could with the awkward, clunky, and sometimes offensively ignorant (when speaking about mental illness) dialogue they were given.
Please don't see this movie and think you've learned about mental illness. Please don't see this movie and think you've educated yourself. If you take anything away from this movie just know that there is real work that needs to be done in regards to educating people about how to live with/treat mental illness... starting with the people who made this movie.
