There are numerous references to the works of author H.P. Lovecraft in the film. The name of Redhook's front company is 'Miskatonic Exports', named for the river that runs through the town of Arkham, and of course his famous 'Miskatonic University'. Pinned to the wall of Redhook's office are several newspaper headlines from the Arkham Tribune, all featuring headlines that are Lovecraft story titles - 'The Dunwich Horror', 'The Shadow Over Innsmouth', and most prominently, '[The] Rats In The Walls'. 'Mr Lovecraft' is the identity assumed by Redhook while running 'Miskatonic Exports'. Some characters are named for characters in Lovecraft's stories, or people connected with Lovecraft's fiction, such as - James Ward (The Case of Charles Dexter Ward), Jermyn (Facts Concerning the Late Arthur Jermyn and His Family), and Campbell (Ramsey Campbell).
